Title: Dithering
Post by: khorin on February 02, 2007, 12:46:21 am
I'm quite new to pixel art and am currently working on my first piece. I've realized I like dithering so much but I think I may have overused it. Would that be a bad thing for a piece? Anyway, I guess my real question is: when is dithering appropriate to use or not? I guess if used correctly it shouldn't be a problem but I want to know what you guys think.

Thanks!

It really depends on what your making..if there is a small amout of shadow you may want to dither it to seem brighter. There is also a type of shading called toon shading which all the collors are solid and there is no dithering involved. There are a few topics on how to do different types of dithering and when they are usefull.I would say to search for that.Hope you become a great member here.Good luck!

My suggestion would be to simply post what you have so far, and let us tell you specifically if dithering was used appropriately; this is what this board is for. And making mistakes is a vital part of every learning process.

Ben (Monsoon) always does some gorgeous dithering.
