I started this early today and have been working on it all the day, although I'm kinda liking the results, I feel I have gone far from what I expected, or visualized, example, check the head, it's a very different style as that of the rest of the body. My goal was to create a low pallette heavy-detailed creature, but as of now I've just messed it up with extra dithering. The head however, turned out like I wanted, and I'm having trouble making the rest of the body alike.
So if its not much to ask, some cc would be nice to make it better, thanks in advance...

BTW this is just a sample I have quickly saved in png, the real drawing is in bmp and will be saved in gif with transparency when finished.
The sprite was drawed with pencil, and it's being coloured in paint.

for something this big i wouldnt limit yourself to anything under 16 colors. this guy would still be acceptable with 24 or 32 colors imo.
-
Holy....crap....that's is epoch! The dithering and lighting...it is just godly....I love you....seriously though,I can't wait to see this finished...

Beautiful stuff. I say increase the luminosity with the light blue highlights and move it away from most of the edges (e.g. the horn on the head). OH and finish it coz its so good.
-
I'd like to see some darker shadows. :) Looks great so far.
-
Not a fan of the darker greens, cant put my finger on the reasons why but I personally think it needs that added warmth to the palette.

That aside, its looking incredible.

Hey terley, what's with going around changing everyone's palettes into ones with purple undertones? :P
I don't think it needs to be THAT drastic of a color edit. I think the nearest wing needs to be a little more like the far one, matching it's general structure. The little claw isn't big enough, and there seems to be some discrepancies between the two wing frames.
Looking very good anatomically, but thenagain i am no expert.
-
 haha..
probably reflects my mood at the minute, everything im doing seems a bit more blue than usual. I still do think the dragon needs some sort of warmth to the palette, adding more colours should do that. Im just thinking that it looks too 'cold', its a dragon.. :-X lol
The nails seems a bit bright to me, especially the back-right foot, shouldnt there be some shadowing effecting there?

This is a super sloppy right-before-bedtime edit, but it should get the point across. Things to take note of are added transitional shades and the changing color temperature thru the ramp. Highlights start out warm, midtones move towards cool, and shadow/ambient light moves back towards warm. A piece this big deserves a healthy palette, although it might be possible with 16 colors. (My edit brings the total to 15.)
This was a fairly conservative change in palette colors, more experimentation can produce better results.

Amazing palette change Pkmays. Amazing edit in general. You should be proud.
-
I gave it a try as well... and i agree with pkmays, with a few extra colors it's going to be übernice.
I did the colors basically reverse compared to pkmays edit and tried to pop up the different colors on the face.

Thanks alot for the help guys, it's getting better thanks to the cc.
I've done alot of changes, added colors, new palette, more highlights, the wing will also be fixed. Although I have added a few colors, Im not going to add that many transitional colors, nor will the palette dramatically change from green to blue (I changed the darkest colors as suggested by terley) because that was not what I intended.
Again, thanks for all the criticism, I appreciate it, more progress will be posted soon.

I feel the effect of overdithering is not always a pleasant one. Can you post your latest update, I want to see if it can be helped without adding significantly more colors.

Here's the latest update:

superrough edit. I think you need to go with more colors and ditch large areas of 50 dithering.
-
agreed with helm. the missing definition hurts the piece a lot IMO.
-
also agreed with helm, and nice edit helm :)
Awesome piece so far though, can't wait to see it finished :D

pixel-art and dragons go hand in hand.
new edits looking awesome, but i would certainly trim down the thing under the neck, if not remove it. some of the claws need toning down as mentioned before, they currently look like gold.
-
Toned down the gland thingy, fixed the neck. Having some anatomy problems at his shoulders =p

Contrassttt! The darker tones should be darker.
-
You must remember there is a pallette change, and that the right areas still aren't painted with the darker colors used by helm. It's in progress, but if it's not what I just pointed, explain yourelf.
Toned down claws, fixed wings (his right wing is in the works) and generally just painted more areas...

EDIT: If it's not much trouble, I would like some advice regarding the muscles of the legs, and if they need any change.
-
I love the details you added a couple posts ago to the mouth. I like that your shadows and midtoens are more distinct in these latest edits. The one thing that was bugging me at first was how flat it seemed.
Should look great when you finish
-
Maybe the dragon should have teeth showing on the side of his mouth. I don't like the brightest green you've got, it needs to be
brighter than the yellow.
-
I agree. That color (looks more like a teal then a green to me) doesn't work well the way your trying to use it as lighter than the yellow.

And to top it off, it wasn't a very good color to start off with.

Removed the weird highlights on the skin.

BTW that color was light blue ;) .
-
I liked the highlights. Gave it a nice, slimy feeling. The neck... fleshy part looks a little odd, the lighting mostly [seems to be lightsource-independent]. Looking quite nice so far.
-
I too enjoyed the hilights. It's just that they were wierdly colored. I mean, a blue hilight on a yellow claw? It's not even the fact that it's blue, it's more so the fact that it's darker than what it's supposed to be hilighting.
Oh, and something that bothered me from the start was the extremely saturated yellow you're using for the claws and horns and teeth. Don't you think something more...bone colored would be better? Like, maybe ivory or something? I mean, it looks like someone urinated on those parts.
This is coming along very nicely, though.
-
I personally thought the yellow on the claws made him look more magical, but seems like not :sry: . I will try to add the highlights again, and fix his neck. It's almost finished I guess...

EDIT> the eye still has light blue and yellow, should I change it?
-
I like it alot, I dont like the colour choice to many dragons are green, possibly gray or orange. and the horns on the head.. what are they they look like stubs of a horn maybe make the longer or pointy?
and the eyes make them darker/red so they look evil. and on the bottom of the wing it seems to lit up maybe remove the lightest shade from there.
-
i like the green, but please for gods sake dont make it purple!
