Title: The Official Pixelopolis Off-Topic Thread
Post by: Peppermint Pig on September 30, 2005, 01:47:34 pm
You're welcome to talk about anything, including how well or how poorly the officers are conducting themselves; this is the off-topic thread. Keep it clean!

     • How is everyone doing concerning PT's passing? If we need more time, I'll keep the topic pinned.

     • Octoberness coming, weather changing!! Perhaps it's premature, but Halloween is almost here! I kind of wish it was a month long, though I'm getting sick of sweets more often. Did I hear this right, Candy Corn flavored soda?!

     • I encourage everyone to pixel at least once a day! Talent, like dreams, must be fed on a regular basis!

Happy OTness!

Chilly = 13lue?

BTW, We need a sketch/speedpaint thread, as been said. I could start one. But chances are I won't.

How would you guys suggest doing a 1028x768 background?  That's way too big for pixeling.  Tiling?  That might work, but I'm thinking some type of non-pixeling method would be better.  I remember DayDream posted on the old boards non pixeled backgrounds that looked pretty snazzy.  Any suggestions?

Yesterday was my school's homecoming.

For my german class, I was in the parade.

I put a dog mascot suit on, along with some oversized-leiderhosen and chucked candy at little kids.

Man, I can't think of a better way to spend an hour.

EDIT: Just found this... (http://www.pixelcomic.net/)

10 points for that.

What?!?! Blasphemy... Erm... I wouldn't mind seeing a line-art blitz come out of that. Give me some more details about this... traditionally the posting of non-pixel art was done in expectation that there'd be some pixeling coming out of it, such as with posting game concept art. Sometimes I have the urge to post non pixel art, but I know that would be wrong if I wasn't then pixeling the cg art. I'm a bit more lax on works that are partially pixelled. People have the liberty to ignore things that aren't done with pixel art methods... so yeah, again, more details please. Maybe the representatives could consider this.

If you have the will, there's nothing too big to be pixelled. But I would probably suggest an indexed painting mode (demoscene style, may need a particular app to do it), like some of the cool large backgrounds which have been posted on the forum before.

That sounds great Evan

Pixel Comic... read a few of them.  *Thumbs Up*   Amusing!

Right. Watch, as I go in depth into what I just said!

Almost forgot about the pixels >_>

Well a concept art into sprite would be good.

I didn't go very deep. But yeah. Like that one contest. I think it happened on ign, if I'm not mistaken. It was of that wisp-ish character, remember?

So I've been programming lately, and here's what I came up with:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v601/StairwaytoEvan/PixelGen/pixelgen1.gif)

It's an automatic pixel-art generator. If you look closely, you can see an octopus. Don't you just love it? This is the alpha version. Here's the binary and source in .cpp version:

http://www.freewebs.com/stairwaytoevan/PixelGenAlpha1.zip

Enjoy! Updates to come (heh)

Couldn't we just have a sketch/concept pixel art thread for either sketches/concepts we intend to pixel or sketches/concepts done with pixels? I often sketch with pixels - 2 or 3 colour, 15 minute stuff. It would be like an ultra WIP thread where much of it just wouldn't be completed ever.

Can I get a list of all the mods for pixelation? I got something I want to send, and I don't want to leave any of them out.

Also, any suggestiosn for a halloween challenge? If we're going to do one, then I figure we've got until the 3rd week of Oct. to decide on how to do it. I'm more of a tiling man, so what I would like to see is a mass collaboration graveyard. It'd be like the tile collaborations before pixelation's latest crash where people take numbers and fill in the corresponding tile on the map. However, there wouldn' be any long lines as you wait for someone to finish up the tile next to yours as each tile on the map would be completely modular.

An mockup showing hwo it might be done:
(http://img394.imageshack.us/img394/7477/halloweenmockup6vd.png)

On the left is a cross-section of a graveyard. there is a large variety of terrain types, varying from the surface to dirt, a cavern underground and even magma if someone were up to it. The possibilitiess are endless. you could get together with some fellow members and create interesting scenes in the dirt. Maybe a robot hell or two, or even jut a plain hell. Perhaps some sort of zombie city will materialise, or even a plain cross section of some poor soul banging against his coffin after being buried alive. Above this is a wide open sky for anyone to take advantage of. Witches, moons, bats, whatever you can think of.

On the right is a simple top-down graveyard. It would be as the left divided into tiles with each person free to draw whatever they want on their tile. Some might go for the classy headstone, the zombie lover might feel content with a zombie bursting from it's grave. The possibilities aren't as great with this one, but it would allow for the creation of a very interesting graveyard unique to this very community and its members.

And to increase the consistency between artists, the midtones at the very least would be decided on prior to the challenge being started. Everyone would have the same colour grass, dirt, sky, cavern and would be able to draw from these to get an idea of what colours they would use. Might even be good to include some example hightlights and shadows for those who want it.

Maybe use a 64x64 tile as the standard. That should provide enought space for the most part. It will also allow people to complete multiple tiles.

I felt a need to post more random history so I did!  I got more yet Ill save that stuff for later!
Eli Whitney the inventor of the cotton gin played a pivotable part in creating the pre-Civil War south as an economic power.  Cotton has transformed the south from an undeveloped and underpopulated wilderness into the home of Americas largest cash crop.  It enriched not only the south but also the north, which had its own thriving textile industry and whose merchants shipped it to England.  Which used it to sell and eventually get firearms and gunpowder to sell to African kings for slaves, to sell to the south, to get more… cotton…  Well that’s Eli Whitney a hero to some and a enemy to more.  Not only that most people didn’t buy the E.W. made cotton gins because cheaper and better-made ones could be just built by themselves.  Yet Eli’s name is mostly remembered for the cotton gin yet the true reason he is in the books is because of his second invention, the invention of mass production.  How ironic is it that one of his inventions fed the south more slaves and the second fed the north firearms to fight the south.   Heh, I chuckle to myself at this one while I lay in bed on summer nights.
BIW thanks the BRI for binding this information along with tens of thousands of other pages of random junk into mass produced books.

Darien: Grafx2, Deluxe Paint IIe, and Pro Motion all are oriented towards indexed painting. You can find all but Deluxe Paint IIe in the tools thread. No real 'tutorial' is available, since the indexed painting tools vary between programs.
however, an review of some of the things provided by 1 or more of these programs:
 * auto AA for shapes
 * 'shading' drawing modes (shading to the next/prev color in a range)
 * color stenciling ('readonly colors')
 * actually useful gradient fill modes
 * opacity for drawing (and for shapes -- so eg you can draw partially-transparent polygons)
 * pattern stencil (for things like dithering)
 * smudge

I noticed last night I haven’t done any actual pixel art in a while.  So I found some of my old drawing back in the time I could draw and took negative countour of my old girlfriend.  Then I pixeled it and here are the results, not really enough work to be a new topic.  Plus don't mock my AA I was never very good at it.

i really cannot understand this silhouette. its very, unproportioned. it looks more like a white blob if anything. I understand its of your girlfriend but its just not well executed. Define the arms and body shape to look more human and then id say you are good.

aside from the arms seeming too short, the biggest problem with interpreting the outlines is the mysterious huge lump you've got under her raised arm

if it were a dress and this was a poofy fabric, i mgith be able to understand it

but overall i'm confused.

Woah that was harsh man I never judged you.  Also zolth her head might of been facing the other way.. hmm yes that would make more sense.  Like I said it was drawn a while ago.  The mysterious lump was caused by the fact she wore baggyish shirts, and it hung down off of her breasts, because she was leaning back slightly.

does anyone know where i can get a program to MAKE .gifs?

i used to be able to magically get .gif acess for graphics gale (believe me, i've tried to buy it over the internet, not a program i wanted to pirate, but i don't have paypal and my parents refuse to buy ANYTHING online)

i'm trying to make a few animations for a game concept, and mind you i love GG's animation system, but the trial of 30 days for saving as .gif doesn't exist any-more

I know i need CnC on my animations, considering i really haven't animated before, so that's why i need CnC, and that's why i need to make actual .gifs <_<;;

come to think of it, does game-maker export at different speeds?
if someone could tell me what the speeds are in unfreez (last i checked they weren't in frames by second, which is what graphics gale was using yesterday when i made the first one) however if unfreez does use frames.per.second, then i'm perfectly fine.

<_<;; that was an abomination of a post.

Heh, you can animate the way I do...
 -Save each frame as an individual file in a folder with the coresponding number to the frame as the file name
 -Use the free version of Gif Construction Set Pro to string them together by adding each individual frame into the box in order then setting frame rate and trans and bam
I know, its a miracle i do any animations..

Apparently it will take anywhere from 3-14 days.  Now, I actually pirated the leaked promo copy the moment I could, but I actually buy the music I like.  And as long as its a label that doesn't belong to the RIAA, it's definitely the right thing to do.  Go go value-guided capitalism..... ?

Also, my design professor made a girl in my class cry.  DOUBLE AWESOME.

Yes, I know.  You mean you don't remember Mr. H?  He was a horrible artist who insisted everything he made have "uber" anatomy.  All of the muscles were in the wrong place, he pillowshaded terribly, and he couldn't take a hint that he really need to work on his... anatomy (responses to crits were always something along the lines of 'omg the muscles are supposed to be like that because he has uber anatomy').  There was a Mr. H tribute thread, even, which I think was more or less a thinly-veiled mocking.  Well, I know that's what I was doing.  Later, he and aSg started impersonating people at the irc channel, and I think they even hacked it later on.  I think they were... 14?

I know scuba animated it, and the whole thing is based off of the game "bad dudes."  it's just the design of the character is mr.H's patriotic kickboxer.

I liked Mr H. Even after his shenanigans with the 'Diced is Dead' issue... Why did he have to stop pixeling.

I thought the tribute thread to him was still very tributary, and not so much mocking. He seemed content with the quality of his work, and did improve to some extent over time.

It wasn't an official Pixelation challenge or anything, I did it for fun.  The pain was incorporating new images into the Flash animation all the time.

As soon as I have a free weekend, I'll try getting one going again.  King of Spriters 2K5.  Maybe this time you'll be required to do both a profile and a fighter sprite to display in the corner by the portrait.

I don't understand. You should phrase your sentences correctly so that people can understand them.

And get older than 14, bizzitch...

I refuse to send you poorly spelt or incorrectly proofread letters and, "e-mail"s; simply because I detest such a molestation of the english language.

INTERNET! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

POSTCOUNT +1 OH YEAH  :D :D :D :D ;) :)  :'(

Seriously, this is getting kind of stupid.

I have been given the job of putting the vapid opinions of my fellow students on to the online version of our student newspaper, The Stoutonia (http://stoutonia.uwstout.edu/2005-2006/stories/051013/op_01.html).  One of these days I will sneak in a secret message of some sort.

So basically I am being paid fifty dollars a week for two hours' work.  Booyah!  It sure beats scrubbing floors at the elementary school (my summer job).
