Title: Insomniac Bunny's Revenge [WIP]
Post by: Alucard on January 19, 2007, 12:25:03 am
Well after what I am proud to say was a successful second project with my GBC Knight Homage I have decided to bring back my first major project Insomniac Bunny with a new piece of work

The start

The end of the head

I currently still need to fix the head's shape a bit, fix and add more shading and lighting, and do the ears to bring it to completion

If you search for it you would be able to find my first Insomniac Bunny piece which my first major foray into pixeling as well

Comments, criticism, and edits are welcome

the anti-aliasing (if you can even call it that) is really lacking. go find a tutorial or look at some examples here at the forum dealing with anti-aliasing. Underneath the eyes is just algorithmic shading, and you're working with too many shades close together. get some more variation. if you want to keep this sort of style, pick two or three shades of yellow and go for cell-shading rather than dithering.

The shape needs real work too, yes. I'd also try to get away from pure black, or at least soften it up.

Also, the mouth is really awkward. make it more like a curve than 3 joined lines. The chin is also shaded wrong, the shading goes under the lower lip, and the middle of the chin is highlighted.

I tried my best working with the lines you had.  I'm sorry to say though, without heavy modification, the lines are extremely boring.  I don't mean to be harsh, but it's the truth.  A generic smiley (or frowny in this case) is usually interesting if it's very small, like emotes, otherwise, they're just about the plainest thing you could draw.

My tips would be to first of all, get rid of the circle; either use a custom shape, or add features, like cheek bones, etc, to the the existing circle, and second of all, add more detail to the inside of the face; as it stands, he looks grumpy/sad...expand on that with fitting eyebrows, etc. And lastly, maybe something other than yellow  ???

Allright before I head to sleep I was able to fix the shape to the best I could and I also fixed the mouth making it curve out alot better

I did a simple dither effect under the eyes which I dont know if it helps or not you can decide that on that one but I do plan to remove it and do a better shading there later

I also replaced the black with a dark brown which if isnt enough of a change I can easily make it lighter

Also I do still need to add the ears and maybe whiskers or something too

Yes, the direction Joeseph's pointing is the path you should go.

My biggest crit, Alucard, with your new version, is that the eyes are perfectly flat on top; if you look and Joe's edit, you'll see he tried to round it. Also, having to color together and dithering over it as you've done under the eyes is a tad pointless: you could just use one color and dither the other.

Currently I am at school right now but that last edit is actually perfect for what I was thinking about earlier this morning and I plan on working on this when I get home

Sorry for the double post but I want to show how much a of change happened that I am really really proud since I now understand quite fully about AA  ;D

After I get some new comments and read up a little more on shading I will post another updated version and begin working on the ears

Thanks so far for all the comments and edits because they have really been a big help

-EDIT-
Time to show my progress :D

I think the face is more or less done and I am quite happy now on how it looks

The ears are still agitating me and I haven't been able to make a set I enjoy

Man, you are really improving this piece!  :y:

I think the AA into the eyes could use some work though.

The way you have it is too dark and make the lines more jagged than soft...you need to try to AA with the colors that are directly between the colors you are AA.

If you are trying to AA color 1 and color 3, use color 2; if you are trying to AA color 1 and color 5, use color 3, etc.

Hope that helps.

To Stwelin - Awsome edit man lol  :yay:
To Rydin - Ok I see what your getting it and I did lighten the inside AA of the eye

Now to show you the bunny...With ears!!!

I plan to shade the ear a bit but I just wanted to show it now so I could say thanks to all that have been commenting me and helping me along the way because this has now also become a massive learning experience that I have enjoyed doing every step of the way

I guess what I am trying to say is I love you all...as friends  ;D

Lol I wasnt planning on a body but now I am going to aim to be featured!

I shall do this by crafting his a body that rivals that of Hercules himself!!!

Thats what I have so far!

Oh and yes I know those nipples are horrific I just threw em in there like that for comedy

Nipples are way too high. They should be near the bottom of the pecs.

Well, if that motivates you to do better, then okay. But you should focus more on self-growth than recognition/competition.

The recognition is more of a plus to me  :P

This has been one of my greatest learning tools ever so far and I plan to put in all my effort into it even if I dont get noticed

From the start and to the end this has been and is going to be mainly to challenge me into becoming better and to learn as much as I could and boy howdy have I learned quite a bit  :)

Hey would any of you happen to be good at making the anatomy of a really buff arm now would you?

The chest is now complete I just need the arms than I will make the legs

This has been my reference

If you can when you post how how its done try and make it sketchy and dont explain every aspect so I can figure some out on my own

the pecks could be about a pixel or two wider on each side, and the outline on the top of 'em should be removed, they look like little pillows, they have to attach to the body somewhere...

Inside of the ears should be shaded as well.

That looks like bush's ears..o.0

on-topic- I am digging the bunny, the peice has really improved over time, I think it could use a few touch ups, such as making it look kinda like fur, since it's a bunny and all..o.0

I don't really understand why the bunny is so ripped.. I think the face would be much more shocking on a cute little bunny body.  But that's just my opinion, I'm not really sure if this is an already existing character you're pixelling.

To Stwelin - Noted and fixed
To Malor - I will see what I can add do...Maybe some hairy nipples   :yay:
To Leel - I never intented to add the body it first but than alot of assorted people suggested it and I just felt like it would do me so good so I could make sure I had learned what had to be learnt...Than I saw that drawing of my friend and started cracking up and at that point I know I had the perfect body...It was a beautiful moment...

I wont post my current version just yet since it has such small changes

I still need help with the arms though so I suggestions on that are still welcomed

SUPER BUMP

I have returned to this project after a long hiatus and I am now ready to complete this

I have broadened out the shoulders and dropped the nipples a bit

I am getting help from both here and pixel joint so I hope I can finally complete this piece

-Minor Edit-

I'd drop the selout, at least for now.  It's distracting and seems to be making the lines more jagged.  The pecks look odd having an outline on the sides like that.  What are the muscles attaching to?  The shadows on the abs are weird.  You've got a cast shadow from the lines above, but none beneath, making them look like those slats to direct air where the heat comes out in a car.

He's a scary buff bunny, so I think you're pulling off what you intended.  ;)

actually after looking on this pic closely for a while, it seems to me you do AAing and the selout rather random. I mean sometimes you AA the outline, sometimes you use selout without AA.
Also your antialiasing seems pretty jaggy.

This picture shows:
1. Line without AA
2. How it seems to me you would AA it
3. How I would/A common way to AA it with one buffer-shade
4. How I would/A common way to AA it with two buffer-shades

Quite true and I began to notice that after a while too but I was so focused on trying to get an arm I liked I never stopped to fix it  :-[

I will do that now since I accomplished what I wanted to for the moment

Just a little edit.

To say, mainly, that you don't really need black lines for everything. Your image currently looks quite flat, and some volume would do it good.  And I don't think AAing the lines that're there is doing any favours. The head on the edit was just a WIP, but I never got around to changing it, so disregard it.

Go with cow's edit.

Within the outline, it's better to use shades instead of lines to show the form.
