Title: Vehicles Challenge
Post by: Mercury Rising on September 29, 2005, 01:56:34 am
Hello and welcome to the second official Daihyo run challenge!  *Cheers* This challenge is entitled Vehicles.  What this challenge will do will not only test your pixel skills yet your knowledge as well, as you pick your mind and mouse you will gain major pixel kudos.  You can trade in your pixel kudos at the front desk for fonts, pixels, army men, and glow sticks.  -

Challenge Rules
1.)   You create a vehicle that could run on two of the four listed environments.
 A.) Air
 B.) Land
 C.) Water
 D.) Undersea
Example: You load up this page and decide wow I want to do this and create something that can go on land and undersea.  So you draw a quad that has a plastic overlapped folded dome stowed underneath that opens and closes on command, allowing the quad to go underwater.
2.)   The vehicle has to be practical.
Example: You can’t have a tank that sprouts wings and flies.  It has to be something that could possibly work.
3.)   Size is 120x100; this can be rotated or shrunk if you have extra space.
4.)   Color limit is 20 (including trans) 30 if you want a background yet a background is not required.
5.)   You have a choice of styles you want to choose.
 A.) Stone Age
 B.)   Futuristic
 C.)   World War II era
 D.)   Leonardo De Vinci
6.)   Animation:  I must state this clearly to get no confusion.
AN ANIMATION IS NOT REQUIRED IT IS COMPLETELY OPTIONAL!
If you feel you want to take your picture to the next level and show a transition from one form/environment to the other.
Example: Show the QuadSub go from the dunes to the deep blue by jumping off a huge dune and transforming in the air and splashing into the water.

Please note this will be the only topic for this challenge so all wips and finals go here.

I think you should add space as an environment  :)

Hahaha, somebody should do a stone-age space vehicle.  ;D

Space was in the idea when I first thought of this challenge, yet air and space vehicles would look too much alike.

This sounds like a very interesting challenge, and I am intrigued by what everyone will make up ;D I would enter, but my pixel skills are too crap, so I'm going to wait a few hundred years, and then I might enter a competition :P

Don't ever say things like that.  I joined Pixelation because I needed to make my own Halo sprites and I stayed because I like the community.

Heh, the good old times... now I am so much better and I'm a Peer Mod.  Don't give up just yet because you never know what your future could hold.  Just remember Peppy won't last forever...

WIP.

Based on the M3 Half-track. Slightly. Inspired, really. Any suggestions on how to make it amphibious?

What cowboys in the future will be riding:

Hmmm... I actually had time to start something!!  :o

Anyways, it's WIP. I still have to finish anti-aliasing and then, add steel wings to the thing so it can fly. C+C so far?

pfft what is this?

ill see if i can make something but if its not practical im not gonna care. how do you say we have to make something that is practical and then say we can create something that is futuristic. I think that anything then would be therefore made up seeing as we dont know what to expect from the future, so how can you say that it would be impractical or not.

I dont know really...i just think you didnt know what you were doing when writing up this challenge. Because for all you know, there really could be a tank that sprouts wings and flies in the future.

ps. Leonardo Da (not de) Vinci is a person, not a time era.

Is this making a laughingstock out of my flying futuristic P.E.G.A.S.U.S.?  :'(
Still, Alex is right. Physics is an ever-evolving science, and the "future" is only made up of assumptions which may or may not be true.

P.S. That was a list of styles, not time eras.

A tank could sprout wings and fly, if you have the futuristic theme. In theory a tank could be able to fly, if it is what it was engineered for. Take a Boeing 747 for example, being able to fly weighing 870,000-lbs. As long as you got the aerodynamics right and big enough wings to generate a sufficient amount of lift, everything could fly.

Let met illustrate this a little.
http://sprites.fireball20xl.com/NSA/Sheets/adv2as.gif
Take a look at the third grey vehicle, the fighter jet. Imagine it without wings and with a big gun on it. Very possible it's an effective tank. Now then, if it just sprouts wings, it could fly, as long as the wings are big enough to get enough lift.

Hello everyone this vehicle is kind of futuristic flies in the air and underwater.. when under water the "wings" is moved closer to the body and all openings shut..etc. etc.
14 colors, +1 if i had added transparency. (but i dont have a program which can save transparent gifs even if i would love it if someone could tell me about one..cough,cough ;))
I know the design isnt exactly original but I'm so tired of this so i'll just post it anyway. If anyone has an idea of how to improve it, particulary the cocpitglass, please speak up. :)
C&c welcome..

EDIT: Thanks asian gamer. Now it's transparent.

Sea.

And changing.

to be honest crazy asian gamer and brian the great....i dont understand you two at all.

I was scientifically explaining that a tank can sprout wings and fly. I'm afraid there isn't a simple way to put it.

Nice animation, I like how the wheel turns to the side. :) the only thing thats looking of is that the animation is reversed and the belt and the wheel therefore goes backwards for some frames.

Post by: Brian the Great on October 02, 2005, 09:09:17 pm
Heh, thanks. I just added the reversed animation in the end because from gradually changing from land to sea and then jumping back to land again might look a little sloppy. I fixed it now, hope you like it better now  ;)

1. I never said you had to participate in this challenge
 2. I never called it a time era you just inferred that I was only using time eras while it clearly states styles, as CAG pointed out as well.
 3. This challenge has been already been commented on by Peppy, the other Daijins and Daihyos, your opinion will be considered yet it unlikely to affect an already released challenge.
Anyway nice job so far on submissions.
CAG love yours, yet why no saddle?  Why do you think the Native Americans died out?  It wasn't disease or mass murder, no... It was all their men riding horses saddle less and crushing their jewels.
Pixelaro it didn't have to be original as long as it wasn't a direct copy.  Great ship though.
Brian, wahoo yes someone did an animation!  I would have gotten a chuckle out of it if little yellow floatie rings popped out the side to keep it afloat.

Sorry I don't know how to spell peoples names from a long time ago.

EDIT: Heh yeah Indigo that was me a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

:o You mean my history teacher lied!?!?!?!?
Damn! Wasted 4 years of High School!
By the way, I really like your uh... Amphibious Vehicle, Bryan teh Graet. Reminds me of Transformers...
Pixelaro, I never seen it before, but speaking on techical terms, that ship is kewl. The cockpit glass seems pretty good to me, though I don't think you need that many light glares. Just one on the surface and maybe four adjacent darker shades underneath if you have another layer of glass.

Another important fact in history that few teachers know and none want to tell you is Columbus was actually corrupt and Spain sent him on that voyage to get rid of him because they thought for surely he would die out on the wild ocean.  He also brought 4 ships not the originally perceived 3.  The Santa Lucia packed with pigs that for some odd reason were taught to swim.  A group of local Indians found them on shore and herded them in a fenced in area round a tree.  The tree got zapped by lightning and caught fire and cooked all the pigs.  The pigs’ bodies were thrown into a pot with gravy and eaten.   And furthermore Napoleon was not a midget!!!

I guess I was naive when I wouldnt hear that term used again =/

personally, I belive this is more a matter of research and production design, rather than any illustration skills which is what we know Lief for.

ha, maybe the challenge should have been to model some sort of vehicle based on how leonardo davinci would have thought it up in 1000 years or somethnig, seems to get people all riled up and stuff!

Anyway..

Pixelaro: Very very slick, looks like a technical drawing of something very futuristic, I like the line-art and the coloring, but some pieces of the machine look unfinished, mostly the back-end stuff, like that fin on the main fusselage of the machine, and the back triangles sticking out of the wings, more details/shading may fix this.

Lief, I'm very interested to see what you come up with my prescious....

You are right dogmeat, the upper fin or whatever it is does look stupid, removing it altogether made the ship look better. aint going to upload a new version since the amount of new pixeling is nothing. :P

In an alternate dimension, the Germans made helicopter U-boats for teh win.

Was going to try animating the propellers and making it bob up and down but couldn't figure out animation in photoshop and its time for bed.
