Here we go! The character is a mildly stylized jetpacker - the wip mesh of the full character is http://adam.lastchancemedia.com/jetpack/model_wip01.jpg. On to the textures:

Mostly inspired by Vagrant Story/Metal Gear Solid/FFXII, trying to do that "real/painted" balancing act. Doodled in pro motion over the last few hours - haven't worked on the neck or hair yet though.

very cool, looking forward to see how he turns out :)
-
Personally i like these low-poly models with the pixeled textures and all. they are not exactly following the rules, depending on how you see it, but i think it is enjoyable in it's own respect.
This reminds me of MegaMan Legends.
-
I don't like much the palette...It seems to me that the face is "melting".
Scary >.<
-
thanks guys, if it wasn't clear before i am VERY open to edits/crits/ideas about how to make the texture read better. fil what do you mean by melting exactly?
-
I think it's the fact that the chin doesn't read very well making it disappear into the neck. Personally I would move the front of the neck closer to the spine and differentiate the bottom of the face from the neck with a darker shade.
-
yeah i didn't actually work on the neck or hair at all yet, that whole area will be cleared up quite a bit :)
-
might just be how the texture is on it, but the nose seems WAY to0 long, and way too thick.
-
That was a deliberate style choice, I wanted him to have a beakish nose since he is a flying jetpack guy. Does it actually look bad?
-
It looks unintentional, like the texturing is off. If you made the shape of the nose a bit sharper or larger, it might help.
-
Something like this would look more convincing imo.

hehehe you forgot the stoplight sticking out of his head ;)
Here's a link to the wireframe: http://adam.lastchancemedia.com/jetpack/mesh.gif
And I went ahead and painted in the neck muscles, as I think that was causing some confusion about the shape and design of the character:

I also blocked in the hair for good measure, about to start the detail work on that stuff.
<OFFTOPIC>If you haven't seen Children of Men yet drop everything and go see it now it will kick your ass!</OFFTOPIC>
EDIT - a more sideview shot so the nose geo is a little easier to understand: http://adam.lastchancemedia.com/jetpack/3dhead02b.gif

I like the nose, but I think maybe it looks weird because it's so long? You could make it a little bit shorter and leave more room for chin and lips which now are cramped on a small space. Maybe give him even broader shoulders too (they seem a bit narrow to that broad neck)?
Great work so far, keep it coming!

Thanks mirre, i'm gonna keep playing with it - ptoing shot me a few edits but (for worse in all likelihood) I have kind of a fixed idea of his facial proportions. The idea is for him to look kind of aerodynamic and birdlike but also a little bit chunky and blunt - partially so he'll show up well on very small screens, but partly because I like the idea of this kind of blunt, muscly dude flying about like a bird...BUT the nose seems to be a common point of contention here, which does not bode well for it...
anyways last mini-update for the night - probably going to go with black hair, after a few experiments:

And the new sheet:

Thanks again for the feedback guys! I t probably seems like I'm ignoring some of this stuff but I totally understand that "the nose is confusing" - I will see what I can do to fix it :) I just have to do some extra import/export stuff to make geometry changes right now, so I'm focusing on the texture.

ears.
-
What ears? I don't see any ears....oh. (j/k)
My hope is that his goggles will cover them up (or cover where they would be) most of the time, but I'm going to be re-UVing that part of his head anyways because of some troubles I'm having with his hair, which should make adding the ears much easier!
-
I think the nose gives him alot of character, and works great. Its one of the features I like best about him.

try wrapping this one around your head

HOT thank you for the edits Helm this addresses a lot of the problems that I have with my texture so far, I'll post an update later today!

fil what do you mean by melting exactly?
I was trying to say that it reminds of a robot with fake plastic skin which would have spent some time in a micro-wave.
