Title: I'm making a pixel dump thread~! *56k warning*
Post by: Luminous_Reaver on December 31, 2006, 12:44:03 am
Let me try to get this all in chronological order... Expect me to add stuff in random places as I find stuff I made ages ago but lost for a while.

I'll just say what month I think it was made in, so don't shoot me for being inacurate.

Febuary 2006 and Older Stuff:

Rust, a style I made
(http://img450.imageshack.us/img450/9337/rusthn5.png)
And a whole mess of people IN that style. Forget you saw this, it brings me much shame.

Mario stuff
(http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/8132/luigipw8.png)
Holy crap, most of my newer stuff just isn't as good as this. Okay some of the poses are stale though.

Personal Character
(http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/634/freedoyx7.png)
>.>

March 2006:

Some fighting style I made that never got past this one pose.
That's my character. Or an incarnation of him. He doesn't have a set look, or anything, just the long hair, blue-grey color scheme thing.

A friend in the same style
(http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/8706/keatonpx4.png)
She made the Sonic Advance style sprite, though.

An attempt at creating a personal logo/emblem thing.
and some other emblems, too. Mine's that LR one, and stuff.

April 2006:

Next-Gen Sonic
(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/9700/sonicnextgenun6.gif)
I still don't know what that game is called.
Sonic and the Secret Rings, or something dumb like that.... I'm a bit proud of this.

Ratchet in Sonic Advance style
(http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/8661/ratchetsp5.png)
Or Sonic Battle, I can't tell difference.

Captain Picard
(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/1094/picardtl6.png)
It was suposed to be in Jump Super Stars style.

May 2006:

A half Ganon inspired Dark Elf Guy in Ahruon's style
(http://img358.imageshack.us/img358/2563/elfthingganonkv7.png)
Easily my worst piece ever. I mean, it's not even finished. Well a lot of things aren't, but even then it sucks hard.

An old avatar I think I'll wear here, I don't enjoy being naked D:

EVERYONE acused me of editing this
(http://img304.imageshack.us/img304/3874/omfgnotstolenlp6.png) I didn't, k? D:

June 2006:

Mario and Luigi - Super Star Saga style Vash the Stampede~!
I like this one. ^-^

Reaver the attourney!
Let it be known that I did not make the background. Anyway this sucks hard next to the remake I'm... still doing. You'll see it when you scroll down.

Reaver in Guilty Gear X style
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Luminous_Reaver/Sprites/reverggxwip6.png)
and some in progress pics: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Lum...everggxwip1.png (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Luminous_Reaver/Sprites/reverggxwip1.png)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Lum...everggxwip2.png (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Luminous_Reaver/Sprites/reverggxwip2.png)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Lum...everggxwip3.png (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Luminous_Reaver/Sprites/reverggxwip3.png)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Lum...everggxwip4.png (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Luminous_Reaver/Sprites/reverggxwip4.png)

Reaver punch!
I won't sprite me in a white shirt ever again. I feel like it's a bit off balance.

July 2006

~Metroid Project~

I'm a great big huge Metroid fan. The size of my Metroid fandom is really really big.
Too bad I never finished. That is, I wanted to sprite EVERY Metroid related thing there was to sprite in a single style.

(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/8480/dgfhdgdfgdgdoc2.png) - after some expirimenting - (http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/7792/fdfdgfdnhnt7.png)

Some Metroid Prime Visor-based HUDs built for a PSP resolution
Combat (http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/6011/cbvishv7.png)
Scan (http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/8458/snvisyu1.png)
And Thermal (http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/2831/tmvissa8.png)
I never did x-ray, :P

*shrugs*

Health pickups.

~Not Metroid anymore (For a while, anyway)~

Pokemon Trainer Reaver, and some pokemon from his region
(http://img358.imageshack.us/img358/7150/pkmntrainrvrqx4.png)
Aerosmith T-shirt ;o

Emoticons I made but never finished
(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/5800/emoticonsthebegininggc8.png)
This was a busy month, it seems. o.o

Two Master Swords, one's not done
(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/6900/swordus7.png)
Fandom.

My character from Monster Hunter, made 2D
(http://img450.imageshack.us/img450/1871/reavertc0.png)
One of my best, I think.

Some tile templates I made to assist myself
(http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/9929/mtilesez4.png)
That I haven't used. Mwuahaha

August 2006:

I remade that Combat Visor HUD to have part of the Helment
(http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/1315/helmgs8.png)
Which was kind of stupid when you consider that it was intended for a side scrolling game where you wouldn't be looking through Samus's eyes.
Oh well, it looked cool.

Unfinished sprite
(http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/7469/stanceue8.png)
Looking at unfinished sprites is sort of like looking at fetuses in jars. Take that for whatever it's worth, then forget I ever said it.

Solid Snake's Kingdom Hearts mugshot
(http://img358.imageshack.us/img358/7199/whatxk6.png)
I didn't do him justice.

Sol Badguy, and Ky Kiske in some RPG style
(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/4421/rpgstyleoz8.gif)
I think it was supposed to be Summon Night's overworld style, but I suck at following rules.

Reavermon
(http://img358.imageshack.us/img358/4520/rvrmonov7.png)
Some event at some forum where we had to make Digimon based off of our characters.
I didn't finish.

September 2006:

Naked Snake in some custom style =o
(http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/1963/snakesa3.png)
Never got past the first pose.

October 2006:

Forever work inprogress tileset
(http://img358.imageshack.us/img358/4271/insidetileswi5.png)
Meant to be the inside of some giant monster.

Kanden and Spire
(http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/3327/kandenzh6.png)
I didn't make Samus, OR finish Spire.

Samus in an Overworld style
(http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/3360/smoverwrldpreip4.png)
Never got past pose one~!

November 2006:

Me as an attourney again, only this time, unfinished
(http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/555/reaveratt2fu2.png)
My clothes are sexier though.

A Metroid in M&L style
(http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/4336/mettyit1.png)
I did it in ten minutes. ^-^

It was in my pixels folder, so I'll post it
(http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/6739/oose0.gif)
I like it despite it being so simple.

So very Wario
(http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/4761/soverywariokt4.gif)
Based off of this (http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/2173/soveryhappyqc4.gif). Completely custom.

Metroid stuff, again
(http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/9134/metroidstuffffffpf9.png)
I was re-working that HUD for a DS size screen, too.

December 2006:

A world map I never finished
(http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/6640/tehworldmapvt1.png)
 :-[ I never finish anything.

A member on another forum I've been showering with gift art =o
(http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/1975/raieoy6.png)
I got lazy on the scythe on that second one. Also they're different outfits, and stuff.

Myself as a female made for Trangender Week on another forum
(http://img304.imageshack.us/img304/5551/femalemelu7.png)
>.>

A pipe...
A single lonely pipe. And his cut up brother, actualy.

AND FINALY SOME TWILIGHT PRINCESS STUFF THIS THREAD WAS ORGINALY ABOUT~!
Link

And some big empty sheet that' gonna have a HUD, and some Touch Screen stuff.
---------------------------------
And that's it I think. For now, anyway.

Well, there isn't much to crit with the rupees, they do look very good. I'd say animate it, and every couple of seconds have a little shimmer of light go over it (a white line, diagonal.)

Looks like a pretty ambitious project, best of luck to yah. (also, the wolf looks damn cool.)

Cheers.

The top ones, the shape of them are a bit off. I'd say with such a small size, either go either straight or 45 diagonal, but not in between.

welcome luminous :D glad you want to venture into the pixel world known as pixelation!
you should defintily stay with perfect pixel angles.  the update has too many colors. its too soft, the higlights arent hard enough( youve heard this already:P) but its a great start, its definitely already solid as it is now, but it could be better.

ermm.. i actually prefer the shape of the ones you have, they look like they would fit the style better.  I think that they would look more natural than ones at perfect angles.

Because perfect angles don't look organic enough, am I right?

I still have no idea where I'm going though. For instance, if I wanted to make Twilight Princess-esque tiles and stuff, it'd be hard to make them all platformer, and the like.

Oh Pixelation, point me in the right direction~!
Hey could I post a topic where I put all my old stuff, and formaly introduce myself? 'Cause I like revising old stuff.
Title: Re: The smallest thing I've ever wanted to make perfect~!
Post by: Stwelin on December 31, 2006, 06:47:57 pm
Well, you could always just change the title of the thread and make it a 'pixel dump' thread, and then you'd be pretty free to just post whatever concepts and stuff like that you have. As for the TP stuff, i think it's a neat idea in theory, but a little more info would be nice.  are you making a platform clone? (i haven't played TP, but i think it'd be pretty difficult, especially when losing an entire dimension.) or are you just doing a mockup?

Anyway, for tiles i'd look in the general discussion section for the video tutorials, there are some good tile-making videos (the thread is stickied, something along the lines of "ELEVEN VIDEOS")

I think I'm making TP-esque stuff just to make mock-ups, and stuff, but like I said, I don't know where I'm going with this. The first thing I figure I need to do is translate the gameplay in to two dimensions.

Anyway I guess this'll be a pixel dump thread then. Until my TP stuff picks up enough momentum for me to call it a project.

Only if you and I make it a project. You have to be the backbone of the project if you want it to get off the ground.
(Nah, I'll try to make some poses, or maybe some tiles early next year. xP)

Wow, i am really glad i suggested this become a pixel dump, this stuff is total eyecandy. I especially like all the metroid things, and the mini-piccard is very cool. :P

I don`t know if you want critique, but it`s clear to me from looking at this stuff that you are perhaps emulating "styles" of pixel art too much, perhaps inventing "styles" when there are none (and where there are, instead, actual design skills that are applicable on any artistic medium) and not focusing on your fundamentals. You suffer in anatomy and lighting, your errors showing under the less successful attempts to hide them with pixel art limitations and stylistics. If you really want to progress as an artist, my advice would be to hit the books on anatomy, perspective and basic pencil shading (there are lots and lots of books online) before returning to pixel art. Do not concern yourself with style (I especially found mentions of "custom style" absurd. What does that even mean?) because actual personal aesthetic is emergent out of skillful, singular application of the basic artistic skills. It`s not something you search for.

If you`re about 14-15 or so, take everything I just said one level less drastically than it sounds, you have time. If you`re an adult though, you should rush rush rush back to the fundamentals, otherwise you might get trapped in this for a long time.

I mean no offense. This is a critique board and this is critique. Happy new year.

I actually think that's my favourite of the bunch. Seems to be the least derivative, even though it is a Ahuron-inspired half-Ganon.
I don't like this one at all. First of all: the perspective issues. I originally thought it was straight on, but the feet suggest a 3/4 view. The hair is really strange, perfectly vertical 1 pixel strips. He also appears to have hundreds of buttons on his coat, which could've been cut down to increase readability and, you know, general niceness. He also has an amazingly long neck.
I don't see why we need to see that.
I like this one, doesn't seem off-balance to me. But how you managed to use 16 colors on something so small is beyond me. :-\ Why didn't you just find the middle colors between the jeans+hair and use those for both?

I've never felt so ridiculous for saying "a custom style." I mean, what a self defeating mind-set. Instead of growing in all directions, I was drawing myself a box to fit cozily in forever~!

However, my generation demands viable, quick solutions to deep-rooted problems.  It's called instant gratification, and I like it. So I'm going to drop the "years of study" idea and try and exercise my mind, or some thing. Going for a 'trial and error' sort of deal, instead.

Oh hell, I'll pick up some books, too. I can't hurt, right?

I'd post more, but I have to go because of some personal issues.

lol?

Anyway, don't take what helm said to personally, bluntness is his way and its quite usefull as long as you don't let it bludgeon you to death.

He only means that by emulating other styles you are stunting the growth of your own personal artistic style, which can be best achieved by making your own artistic pieces* and for that suggests you go back to the basics a little.

*not that I am impling you didn't do these, only that most of them are not your "own" in the sense that they are emulating someone else's work and style.

blaming your generation (one of which most members on this forum are part of) holds up as little more then a flimsy excuse not to try...

hmm, well I hope that these personal issues resolve themselves and to see more posts by you in the future. best of luck.

That was a joke, though. :x I am going to hit the books, but I'm not going to stop and study. In case things aren't clear.

Also I meant add more to that one post. I literally had to drop my stuff and go somewhere.
