Title: Griddy Dithered Dragon (Diddy didn't do it)
Post by: Rydin on December 28, 2006, 09:08:53 am

I tried to kinda base this pic on an 8x8 grid...but eventually just went to dithering...I was sorta bored with normal shading, so I tried to investigate something different (each grid space either got 50-50 or 75-25 dithering)...and I sorta like the results, but it looks like shit anywhere colors are mixed diagonally (the tail and neck), so if anybody's got an idea to remedy this, that'd be great.
The lines are from something I had before, modified a bit.

I'm not taking the piece very seriously, but all comments and critiques are welcome, though I'm really trying to get some direction on the diagonal dithering.

Oh, and if anybody knows of other stuff like this, I'm extremely interested.

I think the blockiness which forms on the diagnals adds to the character..
It shadeing kind of reminds me of how a 3d model's polygons would look rendered when you have a bunch of quads next to each other..
I don't really feel the lines are working too well with the shading style. I would suggest experimenting with the lines to try and make them compliment the shading..

Tried to aa the inside...I can't tell if it helped too much in some places.

As for experimenting with the lines, I'm assuming you mean to forget the curvy-ness and go for something more square?  If that's the case, I'll try that.

Somebody on the irc channel suggested to change the shading in the tail to be sectional (I sorta got what they meant), and so I may try that as well.

Thanks for the replies, and keep 'em coming!

EDIT:
Oh yeah, I ditched a color, too.

why dont you go with the 8 by 8 grid, and each tile can only have 3 colors?

Your palette lacks contrast, and in my opinion, interesting ramps.

I think if you're making the effort to put that grid in there. As well as sacrificing some of the quality of areas such as the neck because of it. You should accentuate it. Like patchwork!

interesting effect, I think it would work much better if you made the lines go at only 90 and 45 degree angles, the dragon would be very easy to edit too. ;)

-made it all forty-fives and nineties
-tweaked the colors a bit (13 now I think)

Thank you for the replies so far!  I'm actually finding myself growing on how this is turning out...the 45-90 thing, though sorta losing some detail from the original, gave it a....cross-stitched look.  What do you think? Save or toss?  :-\

As for the 3 colors per square thing (I'm assuming you are referring to the c64 thing?  ???)...I'll have to check more thoroughly, but I think it almost meets that already.  It'd be worth trying to meet that requirement I think.

I think I may have ffffed up some dithering along the edges when I changed the outline  :-\

I appreciate all that's been said, and I'd love more input!  :y:

The colours rock! And the squarey dither is very, very cool. I personally don't like the last version of the lines.

try doing some blocky AA for the lines.. I'd be interested in seeing how that looks, and if it helps. It might smooth out the jagged-ish outlines but keep it in style.

To AA the outline grid-style was a genius idea....I'm no 8x8 AA expert, but it seemed to help.....(If I wanted to cut the color count, I could use dithering for aa ....)

What do you all think?

It looks like you cross-stitched it, there and then! :D
Great style.

Cool dragon, Rydin! Very neat style with the coloring!  :)
And I like your choice of colors.
