Title: Can your parents draw and how is your eyesight?
Post by: sharprm on December 21, 2006, 11:35:46 am
Hi, I was interested to know was there a link between having parents (or one parent) who can draw reasonably well and being able to draw well yourself
(everyone here seems pretty good at drawing). I was also interested how many of us have some sort of eye problems (such as needing
glasses or contact lenses). I'm thinking that most of us will have a parent who can draw reasonably well and some sort of eyesight difficulty. Plz vote.

My folks can't draw much at all.  Terrible, I mean really, really terrible.  My sister was getting pretty good for a while.  She did a surprisingly almost realistic sketch of Michael Keaton's Batman years back.  She ain't drawn anything in years though.  Too busy with job and a kid and pubs and all that.

And my eyesight was messed up by a lousy optician who made me wear glasses for 13 years when apparently I never needed them in the first place, and had them ruining my vision.  According to the report several other kids back then also had the same thing happen by the same optician.  I quit wearing them when I started college all them years ago and my eyesights been steadily improving ever since.  Will need something for when I finally afford driving lessons but for everything else my eyesight is now fine.

I used to have a lazy eye as a kid, but managed to correct it, so right now it is fine.
None of my parents draw/used to draw.

M' dad painted alot, but now he has too much work. M' mother doodles stuff at work when she gets bored (Her job is pretty much to make sure the idiots in cars don't blow up the Cost-Co gas station).
And I have 20/15 vision.

My mum, dad (though he can't draw to save his live), granddad and uncle are all professional artists.
I have been wearing glasses since I was 17(due to heavy computer use). No one in my family wears glasses.

Awesome! 12 votes in so little time. Keep them coming because the more votes there are the better the conclusions you can come
up with. It seems right now you are twice as likely to have good eyesight compared to bad and twice as likely to have parents who
can draw. I think i can't really test how important having bad eyesight to being able to draw without grabbing a large number of people who can't draw
to submit data. But I can test is a link between having parents who can draw and bad eyesight (ie. Does being able to draw mean
you give your children bad eyesight.) But finding out the ratios of people who have bad eyesight to good etc. is still very interesting.

My dad is really good at drawing, painting and sculpture but my mum draws like a 4 year old. My eyesight sucks.

Wolverine: Thats nasty! And i thought i got screwed around by optometrists.

Uuu perfect eyesight. But I think it is starting to decrease and it tears sometimes when I pixel.
My drawing is above average about 15 year old but I'm 13.

My dad can sketch Gas/Oil tankers decently since he works for Shell.
My mom... no clue.

My mother and father aren't really artists, nor do they like to draw things for fun. I think only me and my only brother like to draw. Also, my brother, mother, and myself wear glasses.

My folks both drew a lot in their youth, and both are nearsighted, though my dad would never admit it. I'm also nearsighted. It was really fun to compare my doodles to the doodles of my father when he was a young'an. We both use the same design elements even though I had never seen his doodles prior. There is one thing I do with curvy lines and circles that is almost exactly like one he showed me. I don't know if that is merely an odd coincidence or if the artistic-eye is hereditary.

My father is a professional artist and my mother is an arquithect, so both of them draw quite well...my father is better though. I think there was a time, few years ago, in which both of them wore glasses/contact lenses, but I think my father doesn't anymore. My mother probably does because she spends too much time on the computer at work.
I never had any sight problems, even though they sometimes hurt when I spend too much time on the computer. And there was a time in which I had alot of troubles seeing TV and did, involutarily, something weird with them...

Plus I cand do odd stuff with my eyes.

I'm nearsighted, and both my parents wear glasses. In fact, everyone in my family wears glasses. My kids are doomed to have glasses to, if not from me then from my wife, because glasses are hot.

Dad: Fantastic artist, really talented, used to make logos for companies all over Detroit. He's got skill.
Mom: No where near as good as my Dad, but I suspect she must have been somewhat of an assistant to him, because she knows everything to know about techniques and materials.

M eyesight is extremely nearsighted, i wear glasses everywhere.
My mom was a fashion designer and has shown considerable talent in contour drawings to me from a time before she became a nurse.
My dad... not so much.

I'm extremely nearsighted to the point of microscopic vision (we're talking borderline-superpower shit), but thanks to contacts nobody can tell

My dad was a fireman (retired) and my mom is a nurse.

Not that it matters because I don't think many of you have seen my art and can judge my level of competency ;p

Alright, I did some analysis with the data when there was 49 votes. Thankyou everyone for voting. Lets see if we can make some interesting conclusions.

First of all we test whether there is a relationship between (you or your spouse) having artistic ability and your children having bad eyesight. This seems like a silly thing to test but thats unfortunately the best thing the poll can test. So if you've had to do statistics you might know
what I'm talking about in the following paragraph (or be able to point out errors) but if not skip it!

So i made a two by two matrix and let A be that someone's parents could draw and B be that their eyesight is good. The probablilty of
A was estimated as 27/49 and for B 28/49. Then a table was constucted for the expected values. Then U^2 was calculated (corrected
for continuity ) to be 0.148. Then P=chiinv(0.148)=0.700>0.05, so we accept Ho. Ho was the hypothesis that A and B were independent.

So being good at drawing doesn't affect the chance that you're children will have bad eyesight.

Something that I really wanted to test though was whether having bad eyesight increased your chance of being 'good' at drawing.
What we really need is to grab 1000 people at random, run two tests, first to determine whether they can draw 'good', and second
if their eyesight is 'bad', and then do the above analysis. We can't do that so i found on a website somewhere that 1 in 14 poeple have
bad eyesight. Using that figure we can do a test.

We let X be the number of people with bad eysight and test the hypothesis that the sample comes from a population which a probability
1/14 of having someone with bad eysight. So we found x=21, X=Bi(49,1/14), P=Pr(X>/21)=4.6*10^-12<0.05. So we reject Ho.

Awesome. We would've expected 3.5 people in our sample of 49 to have bad eyesight. But it was a whopping 21 people. The above
analysis leads us to reject the idea that this sample of people is just like the normal world population. So, next time you bump into a
signpost, can't read a book properly, have a headache becuase your evil optometrist gave you an incorrect perscription, just think
"if i had good eyesight, i probably couldn't draw".

I think it makes sense because if you can't see properly, your brain has to guess at what its looking at, and this extra 'work' you do somehow has spillover effects on your ability to draw things. What do you guys think? Has anyone read of some real studies looking
into this?

I don't wear glasses or anything, but I'm apparently a little colour blind
and my dad used to be an architect and can still draw pretty good, my mother however just doodles like any other person every so often

well i guess" bad" eyesight makes everything less sharp, making you able to focus on the overall shapes of things rather than details which is important in drawing.

I dunno, till i was about 13 my eyesight was perfect. Perhaps it got worse from being on the computer or drawing with my face to the paper in dark rooms all the time.. Interesting stuff though.

Eyes used to be freakishly good, I miss that. I now wear glasses all the time, they're supposed to be just for close work, but if I don't wear them I get headaches and every thing's slightly blurry, have done since I was about 16-17.

Mum can draw above average I suppose, took GCSE art, Dad can't even draw stick figures. As for the rest of the family, as far as I know, only 1 of my uncles is artistic, everyone else can barely draw a smiley face.

I have freaking excellent eyesight, and none of my parents could draw to save their lives. I've seen them both sketch something in the past, I believe, and they're... well, generic un-talented people in that regard. I have both artistic and musical talent earlier in the family tree, however, and my brothers would be good artists if they hadn't stopped drawing when they were young. I think all of that stuff skipped a generation or two, because I do well at art, as well as music and writing. I think my grandma's sister, or something, used to paint, and sell her stuff... but I'm not sure. So I do believe artistic ability runs in the family, but not everyone gets it.

I wonder if I can sue my optician company for failing to inform me of when I should/shouldn't wear my glasses... because, when I was around that age (10), I didn't know I had to take them off whilst reading etc. and now my eyes are much worse as a result.

my dad can draw.. i think, I saw his old sketches (all 3 of them!) and they were pretty amazing (he drew my mom while he was away with the army awwh)  but he's refused to draw anything since, even when I asked him to teach me.  I don't think my mom can draw though, so I didn't vote b/c there was no "sorta" vote.

And yes, I have very bad eye-sight.
