I was just trawling through the boards here and a thought that struck me was - where the hell do these user names originate? Yeah - i know it's not at pixel topic and perhaps should reside on the Official OT thread so feel free to shift it to somewhere more appropiate...
anyway... there's some obvioius ones like kennethfejer and whatnot but I'm more interested in the likes of "Faktablad" and "Akzidenz" and "ptoing" and "helm" - for example...
mine originates back when I used to smoke - well I still kind of smoke but trying to quit - and I used to have long hair and my buddies at the time used to refer to me as chewy - cos apparently my hair was similar to han solos best co pilot... this name morphed into bacca - then became baccaman... from a bastardisation of "hey have you got any 'baccy man" - like I said... I used to smoke... and this was an often request from my peers in the pub or bandmates who didn't work and needed hand outs... eventually it just became "baccaman" and the name stuck... the 21 comes from the fact that when I orginially used this moniker (on IGN forums) there already was a baccaman (apparently) - so it changed it to baccaman21 - and I've used it ever since...
so... where do your names come from... I'm intrigued... tell me more... :)
-
Not that you care about mine ;p
But, I was hal0b0y83 and this one forum, because I was a n00b, and I loved halo XD
Then I was in that forum's chat room, and this guy changed his name to Neotank, and I changed mine to halotank, but I actually liked it XD
So I requested a named change, and they changed it for me, but then people started shortening it to "halo" and some people thought it was "cute" to say "halu", with a U XD
So, I thought halu also sounded pretty cool, so I stuck with it :-*

when I made my first debut on the internet, it was with the username "patricklissaman", I mustve been the only person in history to sign up at their first forum with their real name
after a few years at that forum I eventually changed to .TakaM, and I shall explain
firstly at this first forum of mine, there was another member called .FlamE, i liked the idea and combined it with:
Tupac
also
known
as
Makaveli
and I justify the period at the start by explaining it adds emphasis to the lack of a period at the end since there is a fair bit of controversy over his death etc
I also use TakaMaru at places that require more than 5 characters, this is just throwing in tupac's middle name 'Amaru', later I found out Takamaru is the name of some anime character too :P

Helm comes from US Epic Metal band "Brocas Helm". Either that or from the Forgotten Realms, it's been more than a decade since I picked it, I can't remember.
-
Time for the old tale once again, huh? I remember last time. I remember last time so well I can inform you that Faktablad is a Swedish word that someone spontaneously looked up for use as a random username. It means fact sheet!
Rox has a pretty short story that I always make much longer because I'm good at typing too much. But by now, I've written it ten times, so I'll make it short. I used to hang on some MUDs, my characters' names began with R because my own name does. Rez, Rantex, etc. Then I wanted to play A Link to the Past on emulator one day and I wanted something fancy to type in the name field. My MUD names wouldn't do because it'd be so "out of character" for them. My old nicknames sucked because I got them when I was like 10. So I came up with Rox.
Since then, it's gone from being a character, to an internet psuedonym, back to a character, into a persona, and somewhat of a mascot, and I don't even know anymore... But now, Rox is an anthropomorphic fox that represents me, that you'll see in one form or another wherever I happen to be on the web.
-
mine username originally belonged to my younger brother :P. I always originally called Tinley as a username because my name is Martin Bailey.. His name is Peter Bailey.. I just thought Terley sounded much nicer.
thats boss TakaM.
-
Unlike many people believe, my nick "Panda" came after people started calling me like that due to my heavy eyebags (and it just got stuck), and not my love for the black and white creatures (though I like them to a certain extent).
-
Mine is originally from a Merman(Note the pun) from Phantom Brave.
I just decided I liked the name enough to use it as my own.
I always built up characters with superhuman stats. Sherman Gill had 26 attribute points when I made him (Cost my life savings).
-
My nick name came from a site called The Daily Click, I was at the site,
trying to come up with a cool alias when I decided to spell it backwords, Kcilc Yliad Eht.
Then, clipped it down to Kcilc.
-
Time for the old tale once again, huh? I remember last time. I remember last time so well I can inform you that Faktablad is a Swedish word that someone spontaneously looked up for use as a random username. It means fact sheet!
You've stole FactSheet's thunder, man!
Darien is a stupid random name that I had for some online RPG. For some reason I changed it to that from Varken, which was also a stupid random name from some online RPG. That was Swedish for pig though, I believe. I also found out Darien is the name of some town. I want to change it again but I fear going through yet another name change would be too much. I'd go with my real name, though.
-
Mine originated from "Monkey 'o Doom" on Pixel Joint. That username came from my love of climbing (especially trees), my appetite for fruit, and general discontent with humanity.
-
I'm a graphic designer. And a type nerd in every sense of the word. Which would explain my name.
Akzidenz Grotesk is a typeface that's really similar to Helvetica, but it has a little bit more life to it. I don't even use it or like it that much anymore (the face), but I've been using the name Akzidenz on the internet for years and years now and I've gotten used to it.
Here:

Larwick - Roleplaying, story-writing main character's name i thought up. Stuck even since i don't write or roleplay anymore. Don't know how i thought it up, but i like it cus it can be shortened to Lar which just sounds rad.
-
goat was my nickname in high school. however, the reason it became my board name is the result of the following evolution:
it was originally superghost, which is a term used among my circle of friends to describe a specific technique of.. "self entertainment"
then I shortened it to supergoat, because nicks on EFnet are limited to 9 characters. Then I thought, "what the hell, i'll shorten it the rest of the way." when Pixelopolis came about, I was goat.
-
which is a term used among my circle of friends to describe a specific technique of.. "self entertainment"
Does it involve the purposeful numbing of one's extremities?
-
yes, the left one.
-
i call it existentialism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stranger_%28novel%29)
-
Oh Narcissus, what are you doing there sitting on your hand
-
skurwy, skurwy87 (date of my birth) or skurIIIy, skur111y (my way of doing the letter w on personal tags).
a neologism that came out accidentally when me and my pal were involving dumb nicknames. Skurwy was so stupid and nonsense that I couldn`t resist using it on the Internet fora. In fact it`s a kind of offensive word in Polish since skurwysyn means more or less a son of a bitch. That`s why I`m usually forced to change it to something else, and there skurIIIy or skur111y comes handy.
My first Internet handle that I can remember was Drake (so the guy from Stonekeep was named) or Gotterdammerung (Twilight of the Gods in Deutsch, a Bathory CD), shortened later to Gotter (factually a plural from the word god in Deutsch).

I have had so many lame usernames that I just gave up and decided to use my first two initials and my last name.
-
I was totally awed by Skullomania from Street Fighter EX Plus Aplha.. that one day I signed up as the name Skullamania .. instead.. I misspelt it.. but anyway.. from that I was regularly called Skull..
So basically Skull and Skullamania have stuck.. and the latter is a name I technically have invented. ;)
-
That's funny but I, too, was called Skull for some time.
I wonder why...
-
Because I am fond of soup.
-
i saw the movie akira and a couple of years later used the name akira for an e-mail account. so i've been like 8 years or something on one name. its a hard habit to break.
-
first name starts with s, last name is keddy...can you unravel the mystery....
*also sort of a parody of eminem...skittles...M&Ms....eminem....martial mathers.....skeddles.....

I used to go by BlckHwkSphere.
Because I was a douche.
John "Parodyguy" Holdun said he pronounced "Blck" as "Blick" and so he started referring to me as Blick. It stuck, and I hated my screename anyhow so I changed it.
David Stoner might tell you it's short for "Ball Licker" though.
Because he's a douche.
-
How I eventually got to my nickname is a bit of a story.
Back in my jr high years I used to have a neopets account.
Me and my friend had made the account.
I don't know where we came up with the nick name, but I contributed soul and he wanted cop.
So our shared name was soulcop.
As time past I began to call myself soulcop.
Basically stealing the name as my own instead of a shared name.
I used to use gaiaonline, I ended up doing a lot of things there under the alias soulcop.
I hated that part of my life. (so much wasted time)
So I decided to go solo and become Souly.
After a while I got sick of that name. (Some time shortly after registering here. D:)
After I while I needed a new name.
I remembered the nickname my grandma gave me.
Which was Penguin. (Because I waddled when I was a kid)
I wanted to make one that suited me and I came up with Punky The Penguin.
I've been Punky for about 3/4 of a year now.
I just haven't bothered changing my name on here yet.
-
I wonder what the impact of long-lasting internet nicknames is on the psyche of the owner. Would I have turned out a significantly different person had I chosen Grignr or Urmom instead of Helm?
-
I have no idea where mine came from. Ask my parents.
-
Pffft. You'll always be Sals to me.
-
when i was like 10...
one of my friends made up his own word.. like a slang term
and so i figured hey, why not. lets make my own word
went through variouse stages that i dont even remember
eventually it just got shortened down to flaber
stuck ever since
its nice too, cause i dont have to compete for the name anywhere either :P
so then i decided to keep it
im not too exciting...
-
Lets see over the last 6 or so years... these are all the ones I can remember.
ToxicLemon- I used to be famous for eating lemons on there own... when i was like 10...
Rhavin- Name taken out of a book and used on a friends forum... i don't miss it.
Pixel Tree and Pixel Dragon- Back at eh old pixelation when i was but a wee newbie
Combat Squirrel- lol
Paranoid Android- Radiohead
VooDoo Magician- Who knows?
and currently Meta|Fox- Combining my favorite animal with a philosophical term. Coincidentally though... i just thought it sounded good at the time.
Holy damn Flaber, just saw your new (is it new? i might just be blind) avatar. it looks great
-
I kinda forget how I got Rydin :-\ I think it had something to do with with Raiden from Mortal Kombat and Raiden from Metal Gear Solid 2 or something.
On counterstrike, I went with "Terminus" for the longest time....partly based on the Roman god and partly based on the train station connotation.
Now days online, like msn and computer user accounts and such, I go by "zamphjeer" (or just "zamphir" if the early doesn't fit) cause I got this old vinyl at a garage sale last summer labeled "Zamfir: King of the Panflutes" (which I mspainted many times ) and I thought he was all obscure and stuff......I later on discovered that he did some stuff for Kill Bill and Lord of the Rings (I think).
I'd rather not say what names I've tagged with :P.
EDIT:

OMG, I should pixel him! :o

9_6 was the best I could come up with when i had to decice for a forum nickname for the very first time -I have no idea how I actually came up with that.
I sticked to it. Mainly because you can type it so fast (3 chars).
-
I dunno, I think its because I used to used to jump off things in an attempt to fly; I found great success with glad bags, BTW.
"Flying" sucked so i picked "Gliding" since it sounded original and I always loved the letter g anyway.
-
Sohashu... I made it up because I felt like it. Im boring like that.
-
Sohashu... I made it up because I felt like it. Im boring like that.
As good a reason as any ;)
-
I don't exactly know how I got my username, I like abbreviations. KBS sounded cool, but yeah every letter had the stand for something so I just made KilledBySuicide out of it, originated in the end of summer -06. When I had the urge to register here I couldn't come up with a better username so that's why I chose KilledBySuicide..
-
Would I have turned out a significantly different person had I chosen Grignr or Urmom instead of Helm?
Well i know your fans would think of you slightly differently.. To be honest i'd probably respect you less with the gooblezogg names. Helm sounds quite powerful yet not ott i think.
-
my fans should seek somebody else to respect. I am but a minor servitor of the elder gods, with a goat fixation.
-
I guess I'll add a boring story to the topic.
When I first started irc'ing in 96 or 97, I knew a guy who went by H3llSp4wn, and I thought 'man, numbers instead of letters, that's clever' (and I suppose at the time it sort of was), so I went by the nick Thi3f, which later became Tjuvas in places where Thi3f was taken, or not fitting, and then turned into Grapes, becuse uvas in spanish (Or something like it, I had a spanish speaking friend) means grapes. But when I got too well known, and wanted to be more anonymous, I used Colonel Mustard, and at the time, I didn't really connect the dots between Cluedo and Col. Mustard, it was something I noticed later ???
Merry christmas

My name was chosen out of tact and logic.
-
Helm, one thing you've got going, is that the name fits you. You not only act somewhat like a Helm, but you definitely look like one who would bear such a name if it was an intentional design, like, in a book or something. Something short and... sturdy...
I do think your own username can affect you in long term (like how your looks can actually affect how you feel and act), especially if you start looking at how other people react to it. On a Swedish online community I still go by Magnetman (because my second email address ever was magnetman_@hotmail.com (not anymore though)), and occationally unknowing people would question me about it and I feel somewhat silly for having registered with the name of a video game character, yet I could do nothing about it. People do judge you by your name online. Looking at someone's name online is a bit like looking at their clothes in the real world. Except often people are forced to pick stupid names with lots of numbers after them...
Anyway. I really like Rox. It kinda affects me in real life rather than online nowdays, though, because the few people I know in real life nowdays, who also contact me online, occationally call me Rox to grab my attention. And Rox is hard to pronounce correctly in the middle of all this Swedish, so it always sounds silly. Even if someone manages to say it in a perfect-sounding English way, it still sounds wrong because it's suddenly another language.
Mmyes, I like typing.
-
Heh, that's funny. I just posted a thread just like this on another forum.
Any hoo, I my real name is Erik. Bob is just what my friends call me( for no apparent reason, mind you). I just think Bob is the greatest name in the world, cause it requires no real strain to say it, no matter what ethnicity. It just rolls beautifully off your tongue. The B.O.B. is just parodying the fact that I use thoughts or pauses at the end of each of my sentences...like that...and this...There is no real acronym as to what B.O.B. means. Although I'm really liking what the boyz at pixeljoint.com have chosen for it.(Beast Of Burden, but I'm leaning more towards their other suggestion, Big Old Booty)
If it weren't for The B.O.B., I would have chosen BuffaloBob, or just Blanco_pantera, which is my e-mail.(Yes, I know that blanco_pantera, white panther, is incorrect in the spanish language, but someone at yahoo already took pantera blanca, and pantera de blanca...bastards..)
-
My username is a contraction of the letters of my first, middle, and last name. I've used it ever since i had access to the internet. (oh dial-up...)
-
I do think your own username can affect you in long term (like how your looks can actually affect how you feel and act), especially if you start looking at how other people react to it.
when i came to this forum i assumed, through combination of your name and avatar that you were a girl. :P
the demographics topic says otherwise however. :o
-
(Didn't I just do this? Meh. Encore I guess.)
No. My name does not come from the protagonist of Metal Gear Solid.
Megaman 3 is one of my all time favorite games.
I became part of a megaman forum a while back. Snakeman was my favorite character in the game (though I was considering Shadowman, glad I didn't though).
I was also drugged by the new EXE/battlenetwork games and put on .EXE at the end.
Snakeman.EXE ...
After a while people just started to call me Snake. I got known a pixler under that name, so I've kept the tag as my pixel alias.
I go by other names when I do other kinds of art. My other one is Imson, an anagram of my actual name. Snake is natural to me I guess as my own starts with an S. I sometimes catch myself responding to it when I hear someone saying it. Ah well.
Oh, and Rox. I would, at least, respect your second nick. After all, that was my third choice :P
-
I had just finished reading the Belgariad and wanted to be the protagonist, Garion, but the name was taken on the forums I tried it on, so I used one of Garion's titles, Godslayer. I use it everywhere now for continuity. I'm not unhappy about it, but it could've been better. At least there are no numbers.
-
I can definitely see how someone could mistake Rox for a woman, what with the female avatar.
Which just further proves that Rox should make something new.
-
wanted something kinda elvish and mysterious. havent seen anyone else use it either.
took me a while to think up - lots of different combinations of letters makes it hard to make one that sounds just right.
sorry for not having a story.
and is rox really a guy?!?!
-
my older username has quite more story than my current one. ill share both
ghosttalon14 was my first user. it came from a character in a concept i had named talon. theres this big plot thing going on and there is a ghost form of him( more like a glitch form actually) and the number 14 holds an important number in the plot.
ryu-name of a character i made up
maru- apparently a common name ending of a samurai, which is what ryu is.
-
At least there are no numbers.
I just hate that, on the odd occasion Terley has been taken :o .. I thought I was the only one, so istead of resorting to Terley55775 or wtever they suggest I jst use TerBailey . Lastname afta Ter.
-
back in the days when I was chatting I picked -blink-once- as my user name. Can't remember the exact details but "blink" actually came from the movie of the same name. I began using deviantART and created a new account for my pixels... hence "pixelblink"... I'm regretting using the "pixel" bit now as it seems a bit trite but most just call me PB anyways.
-
Just thought i'd say, i totally thought Rox was a girl for a few months. :noob:
-
I thought it sounded cool. Strangely, I don't like either of the words Zion or Knight, but when you spell 'em like Xion Night they suddenly become awesome.
Aside from that, no meaning.
Used to be Archblade Swift, a looong time ago. When I was a furre, or whatever.
Occasionally you might see me running around in a game as Xearius when Xion is already taken. No one better steal that name. I'mma be miffed if I see another Xearius running around.
-
My nickname is the latest in an epic lineage. It was originally taken from an awful shonen manga (http://www.muchy.com/review/shot/junkboy.gif), but has become more and more associated with the fact that I look like a bum.
-
I was GOING to post until SOMEBODY revealed my great secret. Thanks.
-
Isn't your 'great secret' on your PJ profile? You should be more careful with secrets. :P
-
Aleiav was actually Alieav at first.
I picked Alieav when I started dolling. It came originally from my favorite font Aleia, but I added a V to it to make it different. Then after awhile I switched it to Aleiav because it looked visually better.
Although people spell it wrong ALL THE FRIGGIN TIME and it drives me insane because it doesn't take two seconds to go back or scroll down and look at my name and spell it right. I could understand if it was 8 letters long but it's only like six letters long. I always try to spell people's names correctly. *shrug*
-
I was GOING to post until SOMEBODY revealed my great secret. Thanks.
Hey, don't blame me for making you tell me!

Zachary Allen Schultz
check it, but I'd like to go by oak, I like that word.

when I made my first debut on the internet, it was with the username "patricklissaman"
Your name can easily become "patricklissaman" so thats another reason why .TakaM is better.

well done

Telemachus Stavropoulos
That's one sharp eye.. nice decoding skills.
-
I picked Faceless because on the internet your real identity often becomes secondary to your alias, so it seemed fitting.
Sadly, everyone else on the internet seems to use it too, prompting me to have so many forgotten usernames it's not funny.
I suppose the reason the name popped into my head in the first place is due to Mabelode the Faceless - the King of Chaos - in Michael Moorcock's (now there's a name) Eternal Champion series.
In real life, my nickname is J-Crow which comes from the phonetical combination of my first and last names. It was invented by my first namesake to annoy me during maths. He'd call out "J-Crow" and when I turned around to find out what he wanted, he'd hold up a poorly drawn crow wearing a top hat with the letter J emblazened on the front, and reply "I was talking about the J-Crow." From there the name stuck, much to my chagrin at first. On the upside, he couldn't annoy me in maths anymore. Or at least, not like that.
-
my last name is Zeid, so its quick and easy to type, not hard to recall/type out and usually available as well as really identifiable for me when reading through posts. People have always called me Zeid including alot of peoples family when they dont know/hear my first name and have only heard me called it... also coz it sounds cool :y:
-
purely because my name is scott i guess lol and the 'eh' was just put there for no reason :noob:
-
IRL my name is Lawrence. I wonder if anyone knows my surname though? Hehe.

Hall.
-
Hey! :P How did you know?
-
Totally off-topic, but.. Lawrence, whenever I see your avatar, I can't help but think how much you look like the reigning west-coast Street Fighter III: 3s champ.
-
This one I just picked because I found the word and I loved how ironic it's multiple meanings are.
it can mean sheer creativity, wit
it can mean idea
it can mean an overly elaborate metaphore.
it can mean arrogance
it kinda reminds me of how looking for personal truths we can get lost in arrogance.
I went by camus for a LOOONG time, got fed up because it didnt really mean much to me, I picked it because it sounds similar to my real name (camilo) which I love but I didnt want to use because everyone and their brother is named camilo where I live.
I still mis camus sometimes though...specially because I used to say "silly camus" a lot.
-
I was origionally "reddawn509" for games, and I hate names with numbers, so I jsut made something up that I thought sounded decent... and I came up with Malor, I like it so....woot?
-
I usually called the main characters of my games 'dragon', I'm obsessed by them.
But when I got me my first online game dragon was already taken....duuh...so I went for black dragon>taken...red dragon> also taken ...fire dragon>taken again...tried hundreds of names that were all taken. And then my little brother stopped by and I thought: DragonRC
Robin is my own name, I'm a male btw
Casper is my brothers name
so thats my names story...boring huh ;)
Oh once I had the name of RC--Dragon, because DragonRC was already taken(I wonder by who and why he chose that name...)
-
I was formerly known as Shadow Wolf, but it sounded a bit immature to me. Helm pointed that out further, thank you Helm :D.
I like the word shadow though. So I simply changed to the Latin word for shadow: Opacus.
-

So you honestly changed your name to Opacus because YOU felt it was immature, or morever, because another member said it was immature? I really hope it wasn't the latter. I mean, why should any one give a rats arse as to who does and doesn't like their name? As long as you like it, screw everybody else's opinion.
But if you changed it cause you thought it childish, or just not satisfied with the name yourself, then thats cool.
-
Nope, not JUST because Helm said it. Mostly because I was really starting to dislike it, that Helm noted it was kind off the final push.
-
Mirre is totally unrelated to my irl name, but it is an actual (nick)name used in Sweden. The whole thing started when I was 13 and got a book in birthday present from a friend. In this book there was a character, an awesome princess named Miriamele, and she was my favourite character. I started to play Graal (MMORPG with graphics very similar to LOZ) and I used Miriamele for a nick there. And then I joined my first forum when I was 14 or so... only I needed a nickname and in the spur of a moment I took Miriamele and shortened it to Mirre. I have no idea why, I just did because I liked the sound of it. I sort of made a character based on me to go with the name, and added things I liked to it (cat ears and tail), mostly stuff related to inside jokes (giant key, I was a mod there).
And then a couple of years ago I found this little book in one of our summer cottages. I had forgotten about it, but I used to read it when I was a kid. Maybe this whole cat-persona called Mirre was something subconscious anyways, haha.
-
I remember there was a girl that walked around campus with a cat tail and cat ears all day everyday. I doubt her name was Mirre though. It was probably something more like Jennifer, but everyone just knew her as "the chick with the cat tail and ears".
That is kind of strange though, Mirre. I hope there's nothing in my past that lead me to Blick because I would be really creeped out. Although the name of the main character of Taxi Driver is Travis Bickle, and my real name is Travis, and alias is Blick, which is kind of close and Taxi Driver is one of my favorite movies of all time.
-
Just decided I wanted to use a different way of spelling Corinne.
-
I read "Ready Ok!" by Adam Cadre, and really liked the character "Echo". Sin E.
-
heh, sorry for bumping.
my first name is näthan, my last name used to be künstler but my mother married a man with a different name.
-
Wuh, so your father was names Kuenstler with last name. But now your mother has a new guy? I see no reason for you not keeping the original name of your father. I know I would.
-
i may get a name change. i didn't get to choose, i was very young.
-
Adarias is an old character of mine from a few years ago, I forget who he actually was but it was medieval enough to use on the AoE2 battle networks and from there it stuck. Eventually I'd like to phase it out.
Don'tEatBadgers, another of my screennames, was pure 11-year-old randomness, I'm phasing it out too.
My real name is Nathan D. Christie, so nChristie, n.christie, or NdChristie works best for me; im slowly moving those into place
Other places though i'm still going to use the name my friends call me, Unicorn Rainbow Sunshine or unicronrsunshine because it is just so tremendously gay (and therefore funny to me) that I cannot possibly give it up completely. I have the sense of humor of an 8 year old.
Name changes are strange. My mother married and became Lorraine Christie, which she still keeps even though she is now divorced for almost as long as she was married. My grandmother is still Virginia Balestier despite being abbandoned by a cold, heartless excuse for a man. I do not know if my father's first wife took his name, or if she ever changed back, as we never met. My step mother hyphenated her name with her first husband to be Wolfgang-Smith, then was divored and married my father and became Wolfgang-Christie, but her girls my step-sisters are still Wolfgang-Smiths. I have cousins who, rather than merge the names of their parents to be Christie-Handlesman, are simply David Christie and Joshua Handlesman, despite having the same parents with no divorce. It's screwy.

Hmm... I'm not really sure. It just sort of came to me and I went with it. Sounds cool though. I used to go by the muffin man, but that's become stupid. I guess I've grown out of it really. Anyway, Zero's what I always go by now.

God this is kinda embarassing, but in high school i was like one of those skateboarder poseurs (among other things), and I wanted to start my own like skate "brand"...you know, cuz that's what skateboarding is all about right...soooo I tried to come up with the most ridiculous over-the-top kind of name, and settled on Hazardous Adam Atomic. Cuz...cuz I was in high school? I guess. I've always been kind of obsessed with the sort of awe/tragedy/era of the atom bomb (duck and cover, bombshelters, etc), and obviously atom is a homophone for adam...
Anyways that was about 10 years ago, maybe 8 years. It got shortened pretty quickly to Adam Atomic for online gaming and internet forums, excepting a short boondock saints-themed phase of counterstrike in 2001 or 2002 (a good friend was the other saint, and our third friend when he could join us was the duke...we were a force for justice :P neonazis and bigots beware!). Anyways I got pretty involved in the HL mod scene back in 2002 or 2003, and it seemed confusing to switch names as I moved into other communities.
I like to think that "Adam Atomic" has kind of shaped or at least affected me. I was a pretty shy kid, very introverted and not very self-aware, and Adam Atomic always sounded...i dunno a bit big, kind of dynamic. I am sometimes afraid that I'm not really living up to my fake internet name, and that motivates me. Not so that I gain the sort of detached, worthless approval of people i've never met, but more I think that Adam Atomic is who I want to be...

You know, Adam, I've always thought your moniker was cool. And you certainly are right: it does sound big. I mean, it's hard to hear the word "atomic" and think of anything but a giant explosion or a nuclear power plant. Unless of course you think of atomic and think of atoms, which are inversely extremely tiny.
Adarias, your name sounds cool, too. Like some centuries-old European master painter. If you changed your name to Christie I'd have no choice but to think of you as a female henceforth :-\. Though the other unicorn name would be cool :D :P
I've been Xion (Night) for a long few years now, and I can't imagine changing it now. Not that I'd want to. My name is awesome.

I use 'tocky', with variant 'atoji' - I like to keep my names short, so theyt're easier to type, less likely to need abbreviation, easier to remember.
I also find yo're more likely to get your chosen name on larger forums and stuff if you avoid real words. I picked tocky because I like the sound of it, like a clock, and atoji because I liked the shape of the word, all curves and dotted letters. Plus it sounds foreign, and everyone knows that foreign equals mysterious, exotic. I've not been signing up to stuff with that name lately, mostly because it seems immature to use japanesey sounding names if you're not japanese.
It's probably for the best anyway, because of boys kissing (http://search.deviantart.com/?section=browse&qh=boost%3Apopular+age_sigma%3A24h+age_scale%3A5&q=atoji), which is not really something I'd considered when I took the name. It really doesn't bother me that much, because nobody's ever even mentioned it, and if they did I could set them straight about it, but it's a complication I'll gladly avoid.

If you changed your name to Christie I'd have no choice but to...
...hit it.

It's kind of funny how people keep reading my nick the wrong way, it's robot riot actually. I've had it since 8 or 9 years (before that, I used a different nick for Quake), and it was just a combination of words which I though sounded cool (plus I'm a big robot fan). Also, I used to spell it R0b0TR10T because of the binary thing there, which everyone thought was supposed to be part of the 1337-bandwagon.

I chose this name so that it would assist that nobody would take me seriously enough to take any snippy or sarcastic comment to heart. It was designed to be silly. No real mystery beyond that. I've been using it for 8 years and going now... and it's stuck enough to follow me back into the real word. After several years people are just warming up to calling me Bacon as naturally as my real name. I'm warmed up enough to answer to it. Then again, many of them are folks that I've met from the online world, so it's how they know me.
I've got no current pixels to show... yet. So sad. :'(

heh, i can't help but read your nick as Robo Triot, no matter how many times you've mentioned that it's supposed to be Robot Riot.
As for AdamAtomic, it does feel quite powerful. It was especially so when you had the previous angry eye avatar. Thought you were some big muscular guy who beats up nerds. Now with the current avatar it has shifted to big muscular guy who is actually quite friendly and likes kids.
Also lol at Bacon. Very funny name if everyone uses it. Bonus points for silliness.
My surname is Hunziker, and when i was a kid others used to call me huz or huzzah, which eventually evolved into huZba. Capital Z cause Zs are cool. No exciting story for it.... :(

What the hell is a triot?

What the hell is a triot?
A person who is weird in a good way, or a nice weirdo.

Yeah, uhm, I won't lie, the origin of my name is pretty lame. ;_;
I was playing Final Fantasy X like 5 years ago or so, which in retropsect was actually a shitty RPG aaaand yeah it came up from time to time when I killed really weak enemies with a really strong party. So I registered "overkill9999" as my MSN account, and then proceeded to use it elsewhere. I discarded the "9999" wherever possible. I eventually thought that capitalization of my name made it look better, so I did that. Then, later I decided number suffixes to ensure no name conflict were lame. Nowadays, I register accounts as "Minimum Overkill", "MinimumOverkill" or "MiniOverkill", depending on whether spaces are allowed or name length isn't retarded.
My nick and google never get along :( I'd switch to another nick if: 1) If I didn't use my old name everywhere already 2) it was searchable 3) I could think of something that doesn't make me sound like a complete tit. XD

Adarias always reminded me of Aldaris, of starcraft's fame. Also, I thought both feron and rox were chix.
My username is a classy portmanteau of Alice and Leviathan (shortened to Levi)
I used to be known as leviathan back when the internet became aware of my own self (and my hotmail account is leviathan_000, because _666 was not available). Then, every fucker on earth thought I was some Leviathan from somewhere else (let alone everyone spelled it wrong for some reason, like leviathon and crap like that), so I wanted a change. In almost every forum, everyone addressed me as Levi (maybe 'cause I was a fan of Levi's jeans as well :D), so I mixed it up with the name of a girl I used to like.
I also undergo on the names of MisterJones, MonseiurSirhan, and May7th.
MisterJones was kind of my secret identity on random forums when I wanted to post as if I was some other guy different than Leviathan ;P eventually it became the handle I use on every emulation related forum, for not reason at all. The name derived from a time when I was uber computer-iliterate and myself and my brother wnet looking for computing courses. In one of the places we went asking for information, the guy asked our names. My last name's Yunes (from proud arab heritage!), but the idiot wrote it as Jones. i corrected him, however, wehn he asked my brother's, he put Jones again. I lol'ed on the inside, and end up being a funny way to address myself at times on real life when I am bored, for it is generic enough (despite living on a country where it actually is not generic ;D).
Sirhan is the last name my grandgrandfather wore, and it kind of sounded cool when mixed with the french of mister.
May7th is my birthday!
