Slightly overhead perspective, yes?  It's good that the eyes are low on the head.  However, he's got too much of a neck for that view (I have the same problem with my sprites)

Right now the body is just a big rectangle.  Try to give him more shape.

The position of the body seems off, aswell as the shading, which seems just top to bottom.

The neck is definately too elongated.  Study some sprites from Secret of Mana or Zelda, etc... you will see that because of the perspective, the neck is hidden 'under' the head, since the angle you are looking at them is not at eye level. (obviously)  I'd situate the head more on the level of the shoulders, and lose a little of that neck space.

Well as it stands right now I find the character to be quite boring. No hair, very boring clothes and outfit. Nothing that strikes me as very interesting. Try giving him some style or making him look a bit more heroic.

As for the sprite I think the eyes, head might be a little TOO round, I feel there's too many colors for what you've done with them, and if it's top down we definitely shouldn't be seeing neck like that unless he's got a giraffe's neck.

One more thing, this looks a lot like your sprite in this thread (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=2569.msg31793). Would it have hurt to just develop that sprite and thread a little more?

Very valid comments from your fellow pixelers! At the moment the whole sprite is very geometric, which is a good starting point. In my opion staring with geometric shapes gives you a proportionate perspective on your piece. Once you have eliminated the neck, you will have a nice starting piece. Then all left to do it to give the sprite more shape and character. Also the pose is very static, i note it's your first sprite but in the future experiment with different angle and poses.

Got rid of the neck, is this a good base to work from now?

That's definitely getting better. I was doing a little edit to show some points or things I thought you could improve. Here's what I got.

Not really.
I don't know how you want the perspective of your game to look like but alot of you sprite is really off.
It looks like gradient shading.
Colours of the major area's of the face have to be place in a correct position.

There should be a an orange pinkish colour for the base colour.
You 2 shades of Brown to make eyes and Ears.
You can mix these coklours with a redish skin colour on the cheeks and usaully making them connect (the major face part, Ears, Eyes and Nose).

Hope you get what I'm trying to say.

It is definatly an improvement but use Delgneith's edit to make ur head have the right sort of shape.
