Title: Astronaut sprite
Post by: efhiii on July 27, 2018, 06:31:41 am
I made this 32x64 sprite for a game, I'd like opinions and critique on the style and anything at all that comes to mind.

I have virtually no experience with pixel art. I made this with Krita using https://cdn.britannica.com/700x450/24/71324-120-CA22C4BA.jpg (https://cdn.britannica.com/700x450/24/71324-120-CA22C4BA.jpg) for rough, eyeballed, detail reference.

Very neat. Going to try to catch the "Blood Moon" tonight?

First thing that strikes me is the black face plate. You're missing an opportunity to show a reflection that shows what's in the rest of the scene.   ;D

Also, consider the 3-dimensional space of the legs and feet. They aren't showing us much information right now and look very flat.

I see what you mean with the legs, they could definitely be less flat.

As with the helmet, I already did take reflection into account, the moon is grey and the sky is black so it's not the most obvious detail.

In my normal drawings, I've always struggled to let myself give things contrast for some reason, I guess mentally I don't want things to go from one color to another too quickly despite the fact that doing so looks better, and I think I've done a similar thing here, not giving it enough contrast.

That said, here are some quick changes I made with all that in mind:
