I have done very little work with crystals and i am having a hard time getting this to look right.... I have tried to look up reference materials but so far haven't found something that really shows what im trying to do. It is supposed to be a "dead" crystal embedded into the floor tile. image will be seen at 2x resolution in game. here are 2 different ideas for the crystal. It is wrapped with black iron...

expand the black outline to create more of an indent for it to rest in and tone down the highlights o it doesn't look s raise up.
the wrought iron lattice doesn't look like one since it stops at the edges, you might be able to fix this by having the bars more textured and having them extend outwards more by perhaps two pixels.

ok will try that, what colors would be good for a highlight on wrought iron?... i have tried both grays and dark blu/purple but still not looking quite right
thanks for the quick reply!
update: here are the tiles with enlarged iron casing. messed with the crystals a little bit too

much better looking, but if it's supposed to be flatly embedded you need to smooth that highlight over the whole form. think about where the light is coming from.
as for highlight colors, try instead reworking the gem colors from that grey to desaturated blues or purples.
-
ok I will try the blues and purples for the gem, and I am thinking I like the whole thing just slightly raised..

gem in blues and purples

I think maybe (I may be mistaken) what MysteryMeat was referring to was an even slighter hue-shifting, so that it still reads as grey, but less "boring" ?

(Ok maybe that's too slight? Could someone more experienced than I am with hue-shifting help ? ^^)

Hmmm i do like the subtle shift you did their.... maybe just a tad more to the saturated side would make it very nice indeed!... Im liking both my more "blue" version and your minor color shift version! I will have to play with it some more a bit later today.

ay, glad someone was able to parse my sleep-addled ramblings the right way!
Yeah, hue shifting is some fun stuff once you get the knack for it. I usually use a very-nearly-grey highlight and a mid-saturated dark for the most part, unless I'm going for a specific mood. Tends to work out pretty well!

Done before reading this was a floor tile. Don't bump up the value like I did, just the saturation, and drop the color count down/moar contrast between indices
Inset that stone, right in the ground (drop shadows).

That's pretty awesome looking! I have not been able to work on my pixel art for a bit due to life lol. When I get a chance to sit down again I will definitely be working on this tile again! thank you

I increased contrast and added more crystalline features to the tile.
