Title: Thoughts on my tileset!
Post by: jjgms on March 22, 2018, 08:32:54 am
This is my tileset for a motel bedroom. I would like to know if there are any mistakes or suggestions. The tileset contains two mats, a vase, a picture frame and a nightstand.

I don't know if this is really much of a tileset at the moment, looks more like game objects that would get placed over room and environment tiles rather than a tileset itself.

The frame looks very light compared to the rest of it.
The vase seems to be in a different projection. Since we can see the top of the nightstand, we should be able to see the top of the vase, as well.
Why do the mats only have lines on three sides? Are they meant as markers for doors or something?

It's difficult to give more feedback than that since you've given no context. Why not put together a mockup so you and people here can see how these tiles actually work in their environment and together?

The tiles vary in sizes but they will be split into separate tiles. Yes, the lines on the mats mark the direction of a door if it's closer to the screen or away. I'll get rid of the picture frame and I'll fix the perspective. Sadly, these tiles are not enough to make a mockup of what I want to have in the game.

You should make some floor, wall, and door tiles. In fact, I'd consider doing those before anything else, since those will set the mood/lighting and scale for the rest of them.

I recommend starting with a mockup of a scene whenever possible, instead of drawing assets in isolation. A mockup lets you make sure everything works together as you work on it, and provides context for feedback even before you've finished all the tiles (since the parts you haven't done yet can be roughly blocked in).
