Title: [Newbie] Advice for Run Cycle
Post by: Noouhh on March 06, 2018, 04:29:23 am
Hi!

I'm pretty much brand new to pixel art and animation and want some advice on how to move forward with this simple run cycle. I'm going to add arms to the animation but haven't yet, kind of just want to get the body and legs down first.

Thanks!

Please don't pre-zoom your art, the forums have their own zoom feature. 1x art is easier to view at different scales and easier to edit.

I like the timing of the run, but feel that such a long floating period might look better if the high point of the run was a pixel higher or something.

I don't recommend leaving the arms out entirely when drafting. The arms make it easier to see which way the torso should rotate during a run. Without the torso rotating, a run looks stiff even if the legs are beautifully animated. Animate the whole body, perhaps using colour-coded, solid-coloured shapes representing each limb. Shade and add details after.

The bottom of the red scarf disappears in some frames.

Okay I have done a little more work on it, but somethings still seems a little off. I definitely agree that I should have done the arms along side the body and legs haha.

when the foreleg is back there is an awkward pause. I'd also recommend some slight tilting on the head to gibe it more life, like he's leaning imto his steps

Wow that actually looks so much better! It's crazy how such little changes can change the whole feel of the animation. Thank you guys so much for your help. I'll post here when I finish up the arms just to show the final product.

^ this is a really nice read for aspiring animators, but it's a bit long to reasonably scour through as a pdf so the pages for running I'd suggest looking at is 102-213. You can quickly skim through these and just look at the drawings throughout to get an idea.

Make sure the legs lift off the ground while kicking forward. It will improve the arc of the motion and just makes more sense.
