Title: Demoscene Poll
Post by: Peppermint Pig on November 16, 2006, 04:16:34 pm
Where do you stand in regards to the Demoscene movement and artistic styles?

I voted for the wrong option by mistake :p I know it and HAVE attempted it, but my interest isn't any more or less than any of the other distinct pixel styles I see; my roots for pixel art are strongly in the Amiga era (something which is evident in almost all of my pixels), but as I learned more and pixeled more, my interests broadened a whole freaking lot

I know it and like it and have known various demo scene contributors over my career - I've been a bit too busy making games though to get involved personally - plus I've always had a social life, and (generally speaking) a girl friend to keep entertained...  so I've not really got into it per se - but had my life been a bit different to what it has been then sure... I could easily imagine getting 'into it'...

i am in the demoscene.
HAH jk. i know it and have attempted it. with good comments from actual sceners mind you!

@evil-ville: imo youve already captured a very demosceneish style in your work.

I used to find it awesome in the early days of 286-486's when they would get the most of the system. Though since then I've lost interest.

i love looking at demoscene - but i would love to be able to be good and patient enough to do it.

some pieces just look too much like photos/cg, i like the ones where you can tell it has been pixelled.

Demoscene and the Cyberpunk, two things that always inspired and scared me at once.

Back in the "old days" (not so old actually, it was 1999/2002), I used to be around the local scene; was watching, reading and sending shit to friends. Like a silent watcher or something, not even a swapper.

Never attempted on my own, unfortunately. I was a kid after all.

(I didn`t choose the I know it and I try to use demoscene stylings in my work option, because it`s something I`m still aiming for but haven`t done yet.)

pedantic edit

Still very much active in the scene, but as a coder. When I started in the C64 scene back in the late eighties I did graphics aswell, but MAN where those some ugly logos!  I should try to dig them up so we can all have a good laugh.
Since then I have realised that art wasn't my department.

-edit-

Managed to find a screenshot of an old demo. Triad logo pixeled by me, all other graphics by better artists!  ;D

To be honest I think the logo is the best thing in that picture.

I've been watching demos since 1994, and I'm active in the scene since 1999, went to my first demoparty in 2000. Not that active anymore recently though, I just don't have the time for all the things I'd like to do.

Following the scene a bit since around 1998-1999, and became active in the c64 scene 2005 :B

Eh, I know what it is, and I've seen some of it around. It'd be nice to try the style, but I couldn't pull it off as good as I'd like, and... I'd rather do sprites!

Demoscene stuff always feels too distant to me. I know what it is, and I can appreciate the work that goes into it, but it's not something I'd like to try.

I feel like a total ditz asking this...

Um, what is demoscene?

Is it basicly doing artistic graphic designs with pixels? Like, just designs, not people and landscapes and stuff?

way back when, there was this piece of hardware called the amiga. people would do " demos" on it, using code and images to make interesting little things that basically tried to go beyond the limitations of the machine( am i correct) demoscene artwork is the images used in these demos.

(is there an echo around here?) :S

Yes... and Yes.

Hey - Ryumaru - don't take this the wrong way dude - but It makes me laff the way you describe the demoscene with the word 'basically' in that it wasn't that in the slightest - in fact - it was a great deal of hard work... but I know what you mean - you're absolutely correct though... and yes it does go beyond the amiga... the c-64 was a big demoscener machine... it may go back beyond that too - but that's out of the limits of my knowledge...

Well nowadays there is a bigger or smaller scene for pretty much everything you can code for :D

The biggest being the PC scene atm, but the C64, Amiga, Atari ST/Falcon, Spectrum ZX scene is still alive as well. There even is a tiny Oric scene and people do stuff on consoles as well. There are demos for Ipod, Cellphones and some Calculators even. If it's a challenge to get something out of a machine some demoscener will code for it :)

Yeah, the C64 was more or less the start of the demoscene. And as Baccaman says, back then we mostly tried to break the limits of the machine - showing more than the 8 hardware sprites supported, creating graphics modes like FLI that went far beyond the limits of the original C64 modes etc.

Ptoing - funny that you should mention calculators, I've done some demos for the Texas instruments TI-83 calculator actually (see http://sdw.webhop.net/prods.html?prodplatform=6) :D

I'm working on a new demo for it at the moment, and I'm looking for a graphics artist. Hard to find a good artist who can work with the imits of a 96x64 monochrome system though!

Demoscene is hard to explain in few words. It's about art all around: pixelling, coding, music making, etc. I guess that the quickest way to learn about it is looking at a demo... if you want, have a look at the video (http://www.scene.org/file.php?file=/mirrors/amidemos/arte.zip) of the demo called "Arte" (heh), which sports wonderful pixelwork, awesome tunes, great code and lots of stuff in just a double-density floppy disk being chewed by an Amiga 500 ;)

Here are some demoscene-related sites: http://www.pouet.net, http://www.scene.org, http://ada.untergrund.net .

I have an old Atari 800XE, so can I do demoscene on this if I want too? And it's all done by code?

You can do demos, slideshows, musicdisks, etc. on whatever hardware you please. The only "problem" is that not necessarily the hardware of your choice has a demoscene movement connected to it.
Anyway, I guess Atari machines do have an active demoscene.

What do you mean? Code is just one of the key elements ;)

cool, maybe I give it a try in the future when I understand my Atari  :-\. And ofcourse when I have a better understanding of the demoscene in general!

So, I take it you are interested in coding as well (besides pixelling, I mean).
If not, you could just join a demogroup...
... or, you could just join *me* in this project (http://saimobvq.interfree.it/uniVERSUS/index.html) :D :P

Just watch demos/slideshows/musicdisks/demomags until your head blows
