I'm hardcore, been gaming since I was 4, have won tournaments before they were really popular and mainstream, if I could I would spend every waking hour of my day playing.

haha, I left the hardcore gaming behind me two years ago, been only playing games since then because I was bored, but I've to admit I miss World of Warcraft. Nah, I'm not in the scene anymore, and not really interested in new games (except MGS4 :o)

Actually it just depends... ??? yah, confusing I know, but that's what I am :-*

(btw. Pep love your Ava, and PEZtm)

I won't just play any game out there, i usually only stick to a general title or genre. I'll also make sure it's good before i buy it, so that's probably why i don't actually have that many. But, when i do buy a game i'll play on it like there's no tomorow for the first few weeks.. soo i put moderate.  :P

Love gaming, fills up most of my time. Started with SMB3 back when I was 3, and I was really good at it back then. Now I play anything from the newest games to the old classics, I love them all.

why play games, when you can make games..

I use to be a bit of a gamer, but as most games get more epic and movie like, there's just no time for it.

I enjoy some story/epic/plotdriven games, but Mario is where its at in terms of playability. Dude gets high off shrooms and plants and has some fantasy about princesses and turtles. Play these 8 worlds with 4 levels each. Bam,

It takes a great game to get me reinspired back into gaming more than an hour a day/week
The best games I've played that have never let me down are:
Half-Life
Max Payne 1 & 2
GTA 3 & 4

I need to upgrade my computer so I can get back into it as well. I'm really looking forward to playing HL2, GTA5, and DOOM3

I occassionally play 1st person shooters (last being doom3, then HL2), and DS games.
Not much of a gamer after I passed 20. Lost interest in RTS games after Command and Conquer.
If I use the computer, it's just surfing the net, pr0n and maybe some doodle in photoshop if I can muster all my willpower.
I'm looking forward to getting my 24" lcd so I can watch more movies/tv on it and for photoshop.

Woohoo! That thar's a good time waiting to happen!

I don't play games as much as I'd like, but I'm still hardcore.
Pretty much agree verbatum with Godslayer's last comment.
I never really started playing games till the N64, but when that happened, I was hooked.
I thrived on N64. Ate, slept, breathed it. "Screw the psx," said I "Spyro/Crash ain't got nothing on Mario/Link."
Nintendo all tha way!!!
[/fanboy]

Then I got some SNES roms.
Terranigma, Actraiser, SoM, Zelda 3, Contra, Mario RPG. Those are the games that rocked me hardest.

GTA 4 doesn't exist for more than a year : nov 17 2007
GTA 5 doesn't exist period.

I think you  mean the different storylines built off the GTA3 engine: vice city, san andreas.

San Andreas is by far, the best GTA ever, hands down, nuff said :)

The screenshots for GTA4 look insane and sick, too bad the PS3 is going to bomb.

why play games, when you can make games..

To see what others are doing, be informed on what's going on in the world of games. Might as well live in a cave alone with your computer, make a game for like 3 years and then release it to find out something like that exists since 2 years before you started making it.
Title: Re: Gamer Poll
Post by: AlexHW on November 10, 2006, 06:34:40 pm
you dont really need to play games to know what is out there, but it helps.
You could easily watch previews or read reviews and stuff like that if you want to be informed.
It's usually quicker that way, so you're left with more time to develop the game.
I also consider playing different than studying, usually when you're playing a game you arent worried to much about how the technical stuff works and such like that.
seriously though.. if you have to play games to make games, you are limiting yourself greatly because what you are playing would then determine what it is you make. If you are trying to make money and do commercial stuff, then being aware of what your competition is helps. And ion most cases, many developers copy what others are doing commercially, because if it is working and making money for them, then others want to get in on it.

Post by: ptoing on November 10, 2006, 06:42:59 pm
Well I dunno, I for my part can't help to always wonder how stuff is being done, even when I play it. And playing gives more insight than just reading reviews and such. Of course you need not play games to make games, but I also do not see how it would change what you would do. Of course it can inspire you to do something some way you would have not done it, but it's not like you have to copy something just because you played it. That's a silly generalisation, imo.

GTA4, is actually Vice City in my eyes. It's the fourth game to come out of that series - GTA5 being San Andreas. Dunno why you need to be so stringent and technical on the titles. In any case, I still wanna upgrade to play GTA5 (San Andreas).

Not much of a gamer. Used to be when I was younger. I haven't gamed it up in about a year. It's pretty sad too, mainly cause I'm only 20. I feel like my innocence has been stolen from me by adulthood, and my apathy has been growing immensely on all ends. Oh well. If I do play, I just hook up my dreamcast system, and put in my NES and SNES roms and have a go at some old school games. (Mega man, Chrono Trigger, and I still haven't beat Super Ghouls and Ghosts. Just an example of how pathetic I am at video games...) I don't know why, it's just these new games coming out in the market just turn me off completely. I look at them and think, "What the hell is everyone so hyped up about? The graphics on X console seem to be no different than it's older counterpart. That and it's the SAME F***ING CONCEPT AS 50 OTHER GAMES IN IT'S GENRE..." I still read up on gaming magazines just to see if anything new and amazing is coming out to really make me buy some $300-500 priced game console. None at the moment...I put no interest in the poll by the way(screw the voter anonymous crap)

I used to be a really hardcore gamer (I used to be ranked #6th MGS2 player in Europe (tanker speedrun) in the official rankings), playing day and night, mostly RPGs, but I suddenly stopped when I started making games.
Now, I still buy cheap games from time to time but I never finish it...I play once or twice saying "Whaa, this game is excellent" and then I don't play it again...games don't attract me anymore :/

Moderate. I used to play a lot more before. But with college, work, girlfriend, various hobbies, there's less and less time to play games, although I still love them. I'm more interested in making them than playing them at the moment, too, but I still love to play with my console and PC. Games are like, my life heh

Not sure what the criteria for being hardcore is. In some cases it's about as uncertain as the term 'cool'. As in only other people can promote you to the hardcore level. I guess I'll have to vote hardcore though, because I'm certainly not moderate.

Been playing games all my life. I was born the same year the NES was released (though distrebution was different throughout the world.) and was playing Mario, Kid Icarus and Megaman from the very start. On the PC: Sim city, Police quest, Space Quest and Kings Quest. Then the Snes came out and I discovered Zelda (a link to the past). Not through friends or commercials, but through renting a random game and noticing that it was actually fantastic fun to play. Megaman X came at about the same time and things just started adding up after that.

I'll admit, I am a bit of a Nintendo fan. I own a lot of the major Nintendo consoles (nes, snes, n64, gamecube, gameboy colour, gameboy advance and the DS) and play them on a regular basis. Since my NES died, I've been playing all of my old games through emulators. I play a lot of different games on the PC, though the only one that hasn't really done it for me yet is the MMORPG. In rare cases, there have been good ones, but most are repetitive and boring in my eyes and I will never pay to play them, no matter how fun they are.

Games are an essential part of my day. I check the news, the stores and make games myself. Been an amateur game maker since secondary school. Console games are expensive nowadays, so I don't play as much of them as I would like. Though I see the awful tendency that a lot of the games are unoriginal and boring. Hopefully, I can have a say in this at some point.

Hardcore or not, I likes me some games.

I'm above moderate, but I'm not hardcore. I'm definitely more serious about games than one of thems "casual gamers", but I don't play as often as one might think.

I'm in a strange place. I'm hardcore, not so much that I play everything that's out there, but that I've dedicated big chunks of my free time to some select games, and I've become good on them. I'm an ok-amateur in Dodonpachi (35 million, red ship, laser) I've finished large chunks of N, Sonic 1 and 2 wield to my power so on. I don't spend more than a few hours per two days or so on videogames now.

I am very interested in video game aesthetics, and therefore have played almost everything graphical on pc and compatibles up to the cd-rom age. Extensive knowledge on other systems either via emulation or because I was once in possession. Mostly Amiga, some Atari ST, commodore c64. I make games, so I think about gameplay a lot as well, and dissect commercial stuff much as we do with pixel art here.

I normally don't play games, at least not when in school. I leave all my stuff at home.

I might turn on Banjo-Kazooie or Tooie and play that for a while, because I really love those games, but that mostly comes out of boredom (or during breaks from school, when I have nothing to do other than work). I just started Cave Story today, which is really awesome so far.

But as a whole, no. I don't consider myself a "gamer".

I enjoy working on games or coming up with ideas/art more than playing them, but I have gotten a lot more sucked into playing games lately, too. It's that damned Xbox 360.

I play about 1 to a few hours a day. Again, I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I like to play loads.

While I like to play on any platform (if available to me) I must say I'm a nintendo fanboy >:0
I own pretty much all their consoles since I got into games (which I guess it was around the N64) and really looking forwards to the wii.
I also must say I'm a fan of handhelds (read that as gba SP and DS) since I like that whole thing of playing anywhere whenever I want.

My favourite games (genre-wise if you can call it like that) are those games filled with minigames, games where you have to collect something, and games that make you laugh.
(Of course I like some Shmups and a few platformers etc)
And while I dont mind hard games, if I cant clear parts of it after a certain amount of tries, I tend to stop playing them and moving onto something else :0

Graphics wise, started being interested after I got into pixel art. (and yeah I bought a few games just because of the graphics candy)

And from time to time I like to plan a few games (idea+mechanics wise) and work on them.
I like to work on commercial games too though.

I'm really addicted in videogames since my beloved Mega Drive.
