Title: [WIP][CC] Red striped cat
Post by: MadSheep on October 31, 2017, 10:44:18 pm
Trying to work on a fat red striped cat, here are some steps of my progress:

Doesn't it look too overloaded with all these stripes?

does look a tiny bit overloaded, but i'm pretty new at pixel art.
Looks pretty cute though!

Your colour contrast is very low, and it looks more like a tabby cat, than a ginger cat. Also try reducing the single pixel noise in your cat. The shape of the cat is also pretty weird, try looking at an actual cat or something.

I was trying to avoid straight lines while was drawing the stripes that's where single pixels came from.
But what's exactly wrong with its shape? I've seen lots of cats in my life you know  Do yo mean these back legs? I thought it would add some weight to the cat  :)
I did my best to follow all of your advice, does it look any better now?

I think you surely have improved on it, and you solved the main 'anatomy' problem I had too, which was the neck.
You seem to have made better clusters now that you use straight lines, but the colours could still use some more work, there seem to be two nearly identical darkest brown colours for example and the eye colour is oddly high saturation as compared to the rest of the piece, making them stand out in a weird way.

changed the darkest color a bit and changed the color of eyes: (and tried another way of making the cat look fatter)

Also maybe the colors of the chest/belly should be changed like that?

Soooo, I added a bit contrast to my ginger cat (by the way his name is Steve).

AND
I created a friend for him :) Please welcome little blue-eyed Sphynx Nora.
Unfortunately I saved only two pics of her, kinda "before/after"

I'm concerned about her tail in 1 pixel wide - how bad is it to leave it as is?
All other comments and any advice are very very welcome!

Decided to make the cat half-larger

Wow, I like that a lot. You'll have to keep a similar contrast for everything else if you want it in a scene though, or it'll look out of place.

I do prefer the chest fluff on the smaller cat though, it looks more fluffy while the larger cat's fluff just looks like stripes. try adding a lighter shade in there for highlights.
