Title: Rock - monster
Post by: Sersch on October 25, 2017, 07:10:03 pm
Started working on another monster, a rock with a plant on his head.

looking for some critique and feedback.
Especially not sure about the outlines for the plant.

If I hadn't read it's a rock I would have thought it's a root or a potato.
It needs to be clearer that it's a rock.

Really liked your creation so I tried making an edit:

The first one is some cc, I changed up the colours a bit to make them stand out more. I made everything have 1 darkest colour, to make the palette more cohesive. I added some stuff in the shading to make it appear more rock like.
Then on the right you can see that I just ran with the anti-aliasing and see how much detail I could fit into the sprite.

Yeah tried a couple of thing letting him look more like a rock but wasn't really satisfied with any approach yet. Here is the current state:

also animated him:

One thing you could do to make him more rock-like could be to change the color scheme, giving him a grey or grey-blue palette and changing the flower out for perhaps some kind of mossy hairdo might sell the stone more. Right now he looks like a sentient clod of dirt with a plant on his head, though that still works pretty dang well as a character design.

You could make it look more rock like by emphasizing the facets.  For example, try moving that highlight to the other side by the shadow.
