Title: Trash day
Post by: Indigo on November 06, 2006, 12:00:43 pm
like, pawige, i too found a piece of art that needed some major C+C.  I focused on the following major areas; anatomy, texturing, and colour unification.  12 colours + trans.  5 of those colours, surprisingly enough are used in both the green and brown colour ramps.  A lot of time was spent on the colours for this, and special thanks to Ptoing for critiquing it heavily in that area.

new  -->  old

and just for kicks, I combined some of my early
wips with along with my new edits to create a
nifty animated progress gif:

thanks to all those who helped me so far.

my goal was to create a piece that showed what my current abilities are with pixelling.  Its kind of funny because the old version of this represented my max abilities 3 years ago.  C+C is highly appreciated for this.  Help me meet my goal.  :)

I must say, that really reminds me of the koopa guys off of the old Super Mario movie.

Anyways, it's excellent. Though one thing I must say is the green of the skin and brown of the club really stands together.

Awesome revamp.  This is an excellent piece of work.  Though, I think the right leg's (our right) calves shading is off.  It just doesn't fit with the rest.

Waaaaw...excellent. The colours are beautiful.

Now that I think of it, it's all perfect =)

I was gunna say "WTF, old one looks better", but then realized I had them confused...
Wow, big improvement, especially on the loincloth and the club thing, and how so much better the palette looks.
Definitely a pic for my collection of "Inspirational" pics. ;D

I think the legs are fine, the shading gives off depth, and a nifty perspective.
Kudos.

I think the update is wonderful. I'd give the loincloth a different texture than the one on his own flesh, old crit I know, but still odd. Otherwise great improvement.

Lovely! It's got a lot of depth and the colors are a huge improvement. That left (our left) bicep still bugs me though.  :P The club could probably also be improved if you added some knots, the texture right now makes me think of soft-serve ice cream.

Great job. I loved the original way back when, but the changes are terrific. I think the arm being more or less straight instead of bent was a really good change, and of course the unique wood grain is awesome.

Absolutely great!
You took an already gread picture and made it even more awesome! Seems to be trendy now.
Great improvement in depth and detail overall!
I like that stye of yours! So clean and detailed :O~

But one thing looks a bit off after the edit: The left arm.
I'm not sure if the biceps is in the right place it just looks a tad weird.
You could maybe turn it a little more towards the body to fix this.

Awesome Indigo, that palette is beautiful.

Couple of crits however:
-the light hitting the club seems to be comming from our right...while the light hitting the body seems to be comming from our left
-consider enlarging the club near the top by about 3px on each side (so it appears thicker...it seems like a stick compared to him right now)
-the bicept seems underdetailed compared to the rest of the body, however it might be due to the smooth look you're giving his 'core' parts (abs, bicept, inner forearm, mid pecs, etc)
-his face seems very toony right now, perhaps detailing it more would help (less sharp edges near the mouth and brow for example, visible veins?)
-possibly remove the highlights from the tail, doing so would increase the depth of the image

You've improved tremendously over this past year, this piece is a testiment to that.

Hey man, VERY nice update - only crit is at least on my monitor the strap and club run together some, and it messes up the depth of the image - makes the strap and club look like they're on the same plane.  stellar shading otherwise, and i'm still studying th eplaces where you decided to skip out on the scale detail, I think that in particular is done just about perfectly.  excellent!

He tanned the hide of one of his fellows?

I like this Indigo, this is much more impressive than the previous piece, and its easy to see how far along you've come.

wow, thanks so much for the comments and critiques guys.  All of your c+c is amazingly usefull and I'm pretty much in agreement with all of it.  Dhaos, your comments were especially useful.  I'll see if I can pull out an update later on today, but for now i've really got to get back to work.  Ugh work...you can't avoid it forever, right?

thanks again :)

This came out really awesome.

I made some colouredits, not to show how to make it better or anything, as I quite like the colours and think you did well there, but to show how well this piece works even on low colourcounts.

The colourcount noted is always without transparency.

On the 9 colour I removed 3 colours so that the body has 1 unique colour which is not in the cloth or stick, and that I made green and all the other ones brownish going slightly to red or to green.

The other ones are just for fun and show how easily readable they are even at low colour count and they also look good.

:D I've always been curious as to how you guys go about your work. My techniques arent great so gifs like this are always very useful(and im sure to many others on this forum). Nice work indeed!

Great update, colours the most. :)

Can't say anything about technique - looks superior to me, but logically club with all that pile of muscles looks like an extra large toothpick.

Clearly it is the skin of another beast. :P Anyway, I think this is what was bugging me but I couldn't lay my finger on last night when Indigo was showing it to me. Even the club has a somewhat similar texture to the creature, though I dont't think it's a problem in the club's case. Given the period this monster seems to originate from though, I don't know what other textures you could use for a loincloth.
Ptoing:
I don't really understand the point of the 9 colour edit if it wasn't to test readability like the bottom two were... I think there isn't enough differentiation in the two colour ramps when they share that many colours, and it starts to look like a statue.

Hmm.  Looking at the progress animation, I noticed you used the arm of rmedtx's rael, or your edit of it rather.  Why? (just out of curiosity)

my dear indigo
made a quicky edit for you   :-X

parts i touched:
- played alot with arm on left
- played abit with left boob / peck
- touched on back of head
- barely did much to leather hide and strap
- played with club

left arm:
-played with outlines, slimming and toning more, so as not to be such a blocky forearm
-curved in wrist and knuckles
-tried with shading on hand
main points i did though with this
-lessened the harshness of the scales - made them smaller, more proportioned/more suiting to a forearm instead of big bulky scales found probably on back and legs
-made the sections of the muscles less defined from each other (dropped heavy outlines separating, making arm more uniform)

left boob/peck:
-again, not a fan of the solid scales there, its the underside of the beast, therefore somewhat softer, thus the protection is less. the harder more prominant scales are found on outside, and smaller softer scales on inside (not exactly sure i got it fully right, as i did this rather quickly)
-played abit with nipple so it doesnt get lost in texture and shading

back of head:
-smaller softer scales again, because, well, its the head

leather and strap:
-played with shadows and abit of highlights so to make the designs and folds stand out more from each other, rather than flowing into each other. heres a good place to make the difference drastic as to make the details pop out, like the heavy folds and the designs on the strap

club:
- he looks like a rough guy, and has beeen through abit, so figured id make his club look alittle more beaten down
-not entirely keen on the spiral club, but it works

i only played with parts or samples of the image rather than editing the whole thing
these are examples or ideas you can use
- make scale size accordingly / outside of limbs and back is bigger and rougher, insides are softer and smaller
-use texture gradients to help 1)blend and shade 2)go from harsh, to soft, to no scales
-dont make every individual muscle completly defined, have a bit of line breaks so to make unity between the muscles, opposed to individual things stacked ontop of each other
-on the left leg, the side muscles on the thigh dont follow same direction as middle muscle - seems out of place, not sure if intentional or not, but seems wrong because right leg has all 3 going at same direction
-tail maby longer?? or atleast, not quite as fat at the base, because theres alot that we cant see, so the largest width we see, should maby be abit narrower

hopefully this helps some... not sure if it will at all
but ehh

Nice edit there flaber. You touched up the one area I was having trouble with. The area where the club and the strap meet, there's not enough to distinguish one from the other. I'd maybe increase the brightness of the club even more. Truly awesome work, Indigo.

Oh, well isn't that super.. why improve on greatness?!!  :P

I love what you've done with the arm, giving it a new pose - it looks more believable and that's seriously some awesome muscle definition you've got going on..
