Title: Commercial Critique Challenge - New Beast on the Block!
Post by: Helm on November 04, 2006, 07:32:04 pm
You know you can do better than one guy back in 1989 that designed all the art in Shadow of the Beast (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=2343.0), right? Now, after decades of pixel art technique refinement and codification of methodology, you have your chance to show us how Beast would look in the modern day indie scene! Graham Lackey has studiously ripped us these pieces from the plains level of Shadow of the Beast - Genesis version:

for your perusal. Feel free to rip any other beastie from the game yourself, or from the other screenshots in the main thread. Remember: You may deviate from the design of the original beastie as much as you want, and the point is to add as many colors (though 16 max for a single enemy is a good idea I think) as you want, but it must still say 'Shadow of the Beast' and a seasoned veteran - like me :P - should be able to still tell from which enemy you started as a base. Keep the same sizes more or less! Otherwise, go nuts! Show us all how we've grown from 1989 to 2006!

If you're feeling really strong, you may attempt the Beast himself!!

Ah, I have the honour of making the first submission.

I always liked this little guy, hiding up in the tree.

(4,4,4 unstretched bit depth, amiga-proper)

No major redesign, as this was SHIT HOT to begin with. Just more colors and shinyage latter-day amiga effect. Pretty happy.

Lackey: that's wonderful!

Also, this (http://www.locustleaves.com/shadow_of_the_beast.jpg) is old, and photoshop, but it's a beast rendition too. First one to grab a screenshot from the game from where it is at gets extra helm points.

I didn't really reshape anything - just retexturing/colortwisting.

Lackey that's great!
Evil + helms edits are awesome too. I can't wait to see some more applied pixel-progress (helm: codification? Are we that far gone already? Probably yes...)

@ Niss: Hahaha. Right before I finish mine, you had to come and post the same thing. Ah well, good for style comparisons.

Anyway, the guy reminded me of a fusion between Ridley and the Chozo statues from Metroid (that and and Aardvark.) Natural choice.

I wanted to see if I could make it better using the same number of colours. Got the lightest shade from a pretty much useless extra red in the eye of the original sprite. The legs and feet were confusing on the original, so arms were added and the feet on the side is just additional decoration. Can't really say if that's how it was originally, and I *still* can't say if it's purely a statue or not. I think I missed the part of the description that said 'keep it in the SOFB style', fun practice though.

The turnout is looking excellent so far if I may say so.  :y:

Reinvented bat. Didn't change the design much, just lots more colours. ;)

... and reduced to the original colour count ...

Great entires all around.

About the statue: there's only one in the game.  The sprite right beside it on the sheet?  He busts out of it when you punch it a few times and runs at you.

Post by: Helm on November 05, 2006, 10:24:22 pm
Yes great entries. That statue is completely tragic. You punch it, it breaks open, frees the beast, you punch it, it falls of the plane like everything else you punch. Tragic I tell you.

I didn't change too much. But that doesn't seem to be a problem to anyone. :)

I really liked this little guy as soon as I saw him, but I think we all know he needed a badass weapon. Some parts of the sprite were already fairly impressive in terms of lghting and shadow, so I just cleaned it up, added a couple more colours and tweaked the pre-existing colours. Some bits still aren't great, but this is as much as I can be bothered to do with it.

For what it is the original can't be improved, so instead I attempt a different approach.

Okay, and now my beast here. These purple guys are my favourite so far. (Arggh! I can`t beat that *** hydra at the end of the castle level!)

Original, thanks to Lackley for ripping it for me. 7 colours (it counts 15 but I don`t believe).

and my 12-colour edit (doesn`t work too well as a sprite). It meant to be a palette experiment which unfortunately turned into a mess (too dark and everything). My first steps in ProMotion, you know. ;)

Crits welcome! (PM me or something not to make off-topic)

Also, this (http://www.locustleaves.com/shadow_of_the_beast.jpg) is old, and photoshop, but it's a beast rendition too. First one to grab a screenshot from the game from where it is at gets extra helm points.

Huge ass for a bad ass :D. I`m glad you like it, Helm!

As for your Phothoshoph rendition, before seeing it I was quite sure the original presented a human figure (with screwed anatomy and some weird... thingy attached to its egg-shaped head). Good job.

Forgot to say good entries everyone! Keep it going on!

damn, thats much less exciting than some huge endboss.

The end-boss IS kinda exciting and even huge, btw. Yeah, I`ve finally beat the game (GENESIS) in a lame way of save/load state (blame the lack of time, studies and everything). Next time I`d like to do it on the C64.

If you want to keep the challenge alive, I`d suggest exploring the game by yourself. There is a crapload of really nice beasts waiting only for a face-lift.

Well this is obviously still very WIPish, but after seeing helms photoshop pic and the In game statue not to mention helms statue I was inspired.
Using helms palette for a bit of unity, I think i may have messed up the pose a little making the thumb look all wrong >:(. oh well I really like it so far anyway but the palette was a biatch for me to get working at first, I think i deviated from the way helm was using it a bit because of this.

Sorry if this is late.  I ain't been around much and only just seen this topic.

Bit out of practice but I attempted to do the Beast.  Wanted to just chunkify him up a bit.  It ain't great but I reckon I'm done with it.  Been really impressed with some of the pieces here.

Thanks.  Looking at it now with less tired eyes I think maybe I overdid the shiny on it, as someones pointed out it looks almost cybernetic.  Friend of mine said the face and general 'cyber' shading to it reminds him of the regenerated Jason Voorhees in the movie Jason X.  It looks a bit noisier than the smoother looking original too.  Anyways it was good practice for a project I'm getting back to next year which actually does have a graphic style thats sorta cyberdemony.

Buttloads better than the original, thats for sure. My only nit picks have to deal with its wings. They look as if they were originally on a flat plane and then skewed. Must be the lighting thats creating this effect(i.e. the shading of the wings is pretty flat), but I understand that the the wing is at an angle where light can't reach the underside. Just looks flat, though. Also, the veins on the wings tend to stand out a little too much, and look more like confetti pasted on the wings, rather. I love the lighting and shine on it's shoulder, and paws, though...still better than original, that's certain.

Original (8 colors):

Mine (10 colors):

I picked this one originally because it seemed like a pretty easy redo.  The lighting is impossible and bad, the design is just weird, the palette is wooden and washed out...but the more I worked on my version of it the more i found some really clever, cool little touches that were pretty hard to replicate.  The teeth and nose area in particular are really inspired on the original.  I went for a more conservative angle on my sprite, I think to the detriment of the piece - there's something really dynamic about that original that I think mine is still missing.  I've kind of got this Swamp Thing thing goin on too, but this was mainly a palette practice piece for me anyways :P

Here is another edit, I used a small tinge on. Also, I tried to shape the head to be more...demonic. In addition I added a small spike to the elbows, but the arm closest to the body is hard to determine, and generally was hard to do due to the angle of lighting, yet I tried many things such as a lighter pixel though I don't think it will be as noticable, but if you were to judge it anyway I would have to say the inside arm was a negative towards the entire image than a positive. Anyway, there is room to learn, and I intend to.

Anyway generally this is the first pixel modification other than re-mastering general sprites to depict more detail.

Cool lighting. Reminds of an eerie full moon, outside in some gothic courtyard or cemetary. As for this being a remake, you guys are putting that poor guy to shame. Someone should link him to this thread, he'd get a huge kick out if.
