Title: Sword kitty
Post by: Sersch on August 13, 2017, 07:43:40 pm
Another monster for my game, "Kitty Slash" - looking for critique and suggestions

Also a bit of off topic question to native English speakers, does "Kitty Slash" sound odd/weird as a name or is it ok?

Kitty Slash sounds like an attack name or a game title, not a monster name. Reversing it to Slash Kitty makes it more like a name for a kitty that slashes.

The pixelling looks good, but the pose is dull. For enemies, I think it's good to start with an attack or movement pose, since those are what the player will see most often. The idle should probably be a pose that can lead easily into one of those.

It would look more interesting if it had some color.
I agree with Eishiya on the pose. Also, it looks more like a dog to me.

Little quick edit:

Great advice. That makes a lot of sense for enemy development.

I would suggest putting the sword in his hand, or having his hand on the hilt ready for the slash animation. Legs wider fighting stance style.

thanks for the suggestions and for the great overpaint, can definitely see the improvements there!

I've tried it with a bit of a different pose this time:

Might be cool to try it with a sword that contrasts more from the body color. Not a necessity, just might be worth a check to see if it looks better. Right now the tail blends in a lot with the sword. Keep in mind this is coming from someone who is a little bit color blind.

tried more of a red color for the sword and animated it now:

its really good! I think it would look better if you lowered his ear during his squatting in the animation.
(sorry my bad english, i'm brazilian) continue sending animations of sword kitty

Mmm... I find the red sword a bit weird. It could just be that particular shade, but either way, the red sword distracts me from the picture as a whole. It's both the brightest part of the image and a weird colour for a sword. While the cat and the original sword were kind of similar colours, I would have thought making the cat a touch darker overall would have been enough, especially when the picture is animated and the sword and tail are moving distinct of each other.
