I am a long time programmer, and currently working on a Mega Man X style platformer. I had previously attempted to seek out an artist, but have not really had any success in that department. Instead, I have decided to attempt to create the art for the game myself. My pixel art experience is minimal at best. I honestly want to create something with the graphical quality of Wario Land Shake It on the Wii, but in all honesty I can tell I am quite a bit off from where I want to be.
My main character can be seen below. Any sort of tips or direction of where I am going wrong would be a huge help.

Well, I'd say right now what you need to do is learn how anatomy works.
It's a tough one to crack, but start with faces and skull structure and make your way down to torsos, arms, legs, etc.
Prokos on youtube is a fantastic person to follow for learning to do that, start with his videos on youtube or look into "fun with a pencil" and the rest of Andrew Loomis' educational work.
