Title: Enemy Sprite - Skull Mutant [updated 28/10]
Post by: Luzeke on October 26, 2006, 07:01:32 pm
My first post on the new Pixelation!

Here's an enemy from my ongoing game project.

The only thing that bugs me about it is the pants. Do they look ok?

Here's an explanation I wrote on a question about the skull.

Q: I just don't know how your skull is supposed to mutate out of your head.

A: Heh, no logic is needed for enemies. But I'll give you my explanation of it. The mutation is more of a combination of evolution and mutation. They are outsiders who have been pushed away to live in a heavily polluted and radiated enviroment for centuries. They lost all their hair due to the radiation and after a while the mutation caused a massive amount of cartilage to form on the skin of the head. This merged with the cranium when the skin on the head where obsolete due to the cartilage and later were replaced by actual bone. The tounge actually is more of a tentacle since it doesn't protrude from the mouth. The mouth is placed behind the tentacle, which will be visible in some of the animations.

Superb Lineart.

I did an edit to show you what you could have done differently in some places.

That should help you with the pants problem.

By the way, things in the foreground are usually lighter than the things in the back.

My thoughts exactly, Mr.Destroyer. You beat me to it, but I figure I'll post what I did anyway.

I only worked the right side, upper body, but I think it gets the job done. The line art, like destroyer said, is sexy, but the colouring is quite pillowy, and... doesn;t really give a sense of form or depth at all. I changed the palette, too, but I shouldn't have. Destroyer's edit uses your pallette superbly, so keep it :)

Just tweak the colouring and this will be fantastic.

Awesome edits! Thanks guys.

My two big weak points, pants & colour theory. Gotta work on that  :P

Now to tweak the edit and animate the thing  :-\

If you're not afraid of adding one colour, I think one more skin color would be nice to AA between the line art and the shadow color on his torso, a bit like tremulant did it. Try to tweak the colouring and saturation AND contrast on the different skin tones and see what you can come up with :] I promise it'll do ya good.

Made small changes to destroyers edit. Added a color to the skin, tounge and pants colors. I also toned down his  shoulder a bit, I thought it was hard to se that it's a bone ontop of the shoulder since the skin was so bright. and I put some tweaks here and there. Hopefully I improved it.

My edit wasn't fullproof though. I only improved certain parts of it, others i didn't even touch.

I see. I've edited it further now, editing the things you didn't touch.
