Title: What is onion skin?
Post by: Milenchy on May 03, 2017, 12:00:29 am
I've seen it a couple of times in pixel art software and forums but I have no idea what it's used for, and I couldn't find any explanation for it online. What's the purpose of it?

It's an animation tool that shows the previous frame.

It can show the next frame as well.

Ooooh, that's awesome. It's gonna make animating a little bit less painful. Thanks for the info.

It's most efficient for higher-resolution line art, where there is not too much overlap.

There are variants and options, for example in z-uo's Pixeditor, you can display up to 3 previous and 3 next frames, and choose their opacity : typically, you want "far" frames to be much more transparent. The "future" frames get colorized in blue, the "past" frames get colorized red.
