Title: hella bored
Post by: ndchristie on October 22, 2006, 02:27:19 am
so i did what i usually do when i have a block, develope a random iso base.  not for anything but to get myself back interested in partisan, which ive been having trouble finding motiviation for today.  it worked though, there will be an update monday or tuesday on that progress.

for now, the pic -

i need to find a way not to muddy my colors in these tightly-cramped boxes.  its hard to smooth and fit detail without loosing the saturation.....though perhaps i could just not share so many colors in my ramps.  idk, doesnt really matter atm

C+C ?

his legs are very far apart. i don't think the green/blue on the hair works very well. other then that, outstanding job :y:

yeah...i need to work on that, i always push the legs too far apart....

out of more boredom, i was playing with making graphics in the style of these ink + guache paintings ive been doing recently.....just for fun.  oddly enough, i kinda like it....what do people think?  would you ever play a point-and-click MORPG) with the backgrounds done in this style? (more refined of course, this was nothing but me pissing the night away)

Wow, theres no flaws to these really other then that the legs are spread apart like Akira said.
You should really try making an ISO game, you'd be really good at it.

EDIT

Posted the above after you updated. I WOULD DEFENETLY play an MMORPG with this style, its amazing :'(
If you ever think you want to make it Im up for it ;D

He um.. Is making an isometric game.

I think the guys are great, Adarias. And I personally find the legs fine. If you look at it carefully you'll notice it's more Harvest Moon: Magic Melody syndrome (What is that large space between the legs!?) then legs spread too far out.
Excellent, is what I mean to say.

on the mockup:
I would probably play that mmorpg, but Im stuggling to picture how it would look more refined

Honestly, the legs looks fine with the clothing, and I'm blown away by the palette.

He IS making an iso game, didn't you see his other topic? I don't think he'd be up for making two games at the same time.

On these sprites, I agree that the blue on the hair is too...
Distracting? And the shading on the clothing of the third one looks minimal.
Other than that, great stuff.

The mockup is stunning and so fresh! Not sure though where you got the style from, if you can refer me to some more pieces in similar style that'd be wicked (I really like it).

Anyway GJ as usual Adarias, your tile and sprite work is inspiring to say the least.

But I would love o see some buildings and hills done in this style, just tos ee what you come up with =P My guess is you'd go with something japanese looking right?

Do I spot a gradient?  ^-^

Interesting idea. The colours, most notably at the bottom, does get a little hard on the eyes, but it does give a nice effect on the trees. It just hit me that making the characters in the same style would make for an interesting experiment. Many games have benefited from mimicking artwork stereotypes. I imagine this copying the Japanese landscape style that spread over western Europe at the time of Van Gogh. Hmm... I feel like doing some sketching now...

Wasn't planning on giving any specific crits. I did notice however that the belt on your character furthest to the left (the list at the top) looks messy rather than showing his belts. Adding a dark colour to separate them would help. I know you're aiming to keep contrast in the characters center low, but seeing how much they stick out from the background as it is, I don't think it's very noticeable. At the moment at least.

yeah i considered that as an even larger experiment, but i included these characters to avoid making a second thread with just some backgrounds ^^
If you want to go for it, please do, and please post here i would love to see what you come up with :D

it is a gradient, again because its rushed and only a fockup.  maybe kenneth will defend me?  :P

as for the belt....thats a good call.  he was done first, and not as separate pieces (i later cut him up to make the parts)  if i do anything with these guys, that will be #2 on the fix list (#1 being the leg spread)

examples of this work.....its really just colored ink and white paint.  its a very friendly medium to work with, because it goes even on light stock without buckling it, the ink and gauche is so dry compared to say aquarelle, though i use a saunders-waterford paper, cold-press, medium texture, pre-washed in a 4-1 mix of water to sepia ink.  For me it was a natural evolution of my previous experiments with watercolors, but it certainly shows a turn-of-the-century asian influence in the colors and the simplicity and presents much the same as a more traditional sumi calligraphic painting.  if you want to see samples, look up any of those things i just mentioned.  if you want to see my work, buy me a camera :P

Hey Adarias, would you mind getting bored more often?

I like the legs being far apart. Reminiscent of Tales of Phantasia. And it just happens that my works that got the best response on PixelJoint happened to be copying the ToP style. :P  Well, whatever you like.

I suppose it might make animating really hard.

As usual I'm blown away. I personally love the open stance; it gives you work character.(i've been getting tired of the stick straight mmo stances anyway) My only crit is that ( correct me if i'm mistaken) you don't have many larger scale base. Although I love the tactics style, I want to see more of your gorgeous art.(and study it of course  :D)

(edit) O and I'd kill to play that game. The colors amaze me.

yeah, i almost never work greater than 64 for sprites because i just do not like large sprites.  48 is a nice size, as is 32, and 24 and 16 both provide nice challenges.

thanks for the feedback tho everyone, its inspiring :P

I liked the base enough to try an attempt at making something out of it:

If Okami were a 2D game, I think it would look similar to that! (Though your's is more Chinese scroll painting than Japanese woodblock ;)) Nice stuff :y: The sprite-boy is too cute.

OFFTOPIC: sherman: is that a character from Vagrant story?

OT: No, GNDestroyer, but now that you mention it... :sigh:

I've been wanting to play Vagrant Story again for awhile now, so maybe I subconciously emulated it.

The first thing that comes to mind every time I look at that background is: 'pretty.' There's no other way to really describe it. Its quite stylish and colorful (and so are the sprites of course.) However it's somewhat hard to 'read' or distinguish. But, it *does* make the sprites stand out alot so I suppose it in fact, works quite well.
