Title: Pixel Art Knight
Post by: Eyawiin on February 18, 2017, 06:24:51 pm
Hey

I've been interested in pixel art for quite some time now so I decided to try it myself.
So I made this for a little platformer game i was planning:

I've also done an Idle and Walking Animation but first i'd like to recieve some feedback for the static image alone :)

Thank you in Advance   :)

1st thought, is that a knight or a ninja? Ninja knight?
It's mostly the material definition confusing things. It's tough to tell whether it's a matte or metallic material.

Bad material def. can be fixed pretty easily when you pick up on those differences. Demo, via Arne (http://Demo, via Arne).
It applies easily to pixel art too. 2 edits, take your pick.

Hey,

It was in fact supposed to be a knight with a metallic armor.
So i looked at your edit with the knight and tried to make my original version have a more metallic texture.

This is the Result:

I'm already much happier with this but i still feel like theres something missing from it though i'm not quite sure what it is.
Also I'm not sure what you mean with Demo, via Arne ?

Thanks for taking the time to help me out!

Edit:

I was bored so i fiddled around with it a little bit more and this is what i've come up with

In this reduced the amount of colors used in this and tried to reduce the contrast while containing the metallic texture.

I also did another one:

This is my favorite from the ones i posted but im sure there is still much to improve there

I would love to hear your opinions to this!
Also I hope its okay that I'm editing this post that often, but i just cant stop to reiterate my character.

I don't think his boots would be a single pixel, and it makes him look like he's walking on hooves. The proportions look a bit off too, like the arms and body appear to be longer than the legs, so the belt looks like it's in the wrong position.

Another issue is the sword which looks like it's at the wrong angle just for convenience.

ps: I see you already corrected some of those issues in the other version you made

"Demo via Arne" just links to to a part of Arne's tutorial, where he shows you an easy way to show the difference between material definitions (clay/plastic/metal). Latest version is an improvement in that regard. Def needs larger boots though, and try to fix the stance, it's leaning over too much for the sword's position.

Hey,

I started a new document with the latest iteration of the knight as a referecne and keeping your comments in mind.

So I tried to make the boots larger, the arms shorter and the legs a little bit taller.
I also angled the sword differently based on Jehannums suggestion.

This is the result:

Thanks again for helping me out!

Edit:

This time I tried to make the knight look more 3-Dimensional

Still looking for Feedback!

Thanks

I made the side of the knight a little bit brighter because i thought it looked a bit dark there
