Title: Naked base sheet
Post by: Blues on February 01, 2017, 08:34:08 am
First post on these forums. I was following along with a tutorial which had me make a naked RPG character base and have it face 4 directions and I'd like some advice. This is what I've made so far

I'm not sure if there's any reason to shade a base but I'd still like to properly shade this to practice shading in general.
I think the ones facing left and right have the most problems but advice on the other ones is still appreciated.

He's leaning forward a bit there, looks off balance. If you're trying for aggressive posturing, try moving just the legs and hip forward and squaring the shoulders some more. You could also try widening his stance slightly, though that might require redrawing

Thanks for the advice. I had a bit of trouble squaring the shoulders so I'm not sure if this is what you meant.

If it still looks off even after a few alterations i can try redrawing him with a wider stance.

One more pixel forward, leading leg only! Also, look at the skeletal structure of the spine on google, the body follows that curve pretty closely. Understanding that curve can prevent these kinds of problems in the initial sketch! I'd also add a second arm behind him, since you seem to be drawing the legs and torso in a slightly 3/4ths view! Just a hand will do it!

Also, try to kill the tangent (straight line where you don't want one) along the top of the crotch by deleting the two middle pixels, as it is he looks folded inwards slightly.

I'm not sure if I followed your advice correctly but this is what I've done

I'm not sure what you meant by the tangent along the crotch though. Are you referring to the sprite facing forward?

Yes! And much better, he looks proper stanced now!

Aaah that's great thank you for the help! I still feel like something's off with the shading on the sprites looking left and right although I can't put my finger on it but it does look nice enough for now.

My advice would be to maybe rework the head and face, nothing really looks off that I can see but that however I'm not at my computer
Edot: the backsprite legs are too shaded though, looks like he's sitting! And yes I meant the front sprite crotch

Reduced the colors from over 20 to 5. Turned the skin more red so it looks alive.
Added the nose because I think it looked cute :P

This is a pretty late reply (I was trying to draw stuff with no reference, didn't go anywhere so I figured I'd try and improve the base again) so I removed the crotch pixels, made the backsprite's leg less shaded and tried to change the colors so it'd look better (found it hard to make it redder though;;)

How's this?

Here, I did what I could to fix the ass legs and crotch.
I'd say focus on getting the look right before faffin' about with colors, it can be a bit difficult to learn the art of color reduction and right now your stylization problems are what needs that focus.

(http://imgur.com/2PAQZeP.png) also, this is what I meant by squaring the shoulders! (EDIT: I only did them to the left and forward facing sprites) Bringing them up a pixel so it looks like he's gearing up to take a fighting stance. Sort of a held half-shrug! Squared shoulders usually imply anger or brutishness, try to think in terms of body language a lot to get across the point of your character designs  better!
