Title: C+C (please help) Plaid Pogo man
Post by: MysteryMeat on July 17, 2016, 08:57:36 pm
So, I've recently gotten a commission to draw someone's anon character hopping about on a pogo stick. Final product's going to be animated, but I've run into a pretty major roadblock. The character's supposed to be wearing a blue plaid suit, much like this one here: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/71/f5/9e/71f59e12c59509dfd7f9c1f299fa56f9.jpg

Unfortunately, as you can see below, I can't quite figure out how to fit that kind of detail into the pixels, and I can't go any larger than this due to pricing reasons. Any advice?

There's also probably some anatomical issues going on too, it's been a while since I've done any original art and it's been a bit of a hassle getting those gears warmed up and rolling again.

Please don't hesitate if you see anything wrong, I've been out of practice way too long and I need to force myself back into the go-zone.

perhaps you can make the squares on the plaid larger so its more visible at low res?

I did try that, but it lost recognizability. i'll post a version showcasing that tomorrow. i think something utilizing aliasing might work but I've only ever used that for edgework, as a main detail it seems pretty daunting

Simplify the suit pattern. I think big "white" squares can work. I think you need a darker shade for the suit too.

I like you should try having a different color in your plaid blazer. Right now, it had a textured feel with just blue, it doesn't look plaid. Plaid usually has a vertical and horizontal striped line pattern on the material. Maybe adding two vertical lines (and maybe a few others) on either side of the chest might help with the plaid pattern.

Oh geeze, late response haha.
I did a new version, I'm a bit happier with it now! Not much I can do besides shifting the hue of the blues though, the pattern and colors were stipulated in the commission.

The Light-blue tone on the jacket, you may want to make it a bit lighter (In order to pronounce the squares a bit more)
Also, I feel the legs may be a tiny-bit short (Using the arm length as reference).

Good stuff !
