Title: Pixel Art Programs
Post by: Arctic on September 29, 2006, 11:14:43 pm
Hey, what are some good, free,  programs to do pixel art in. All I have is MS Paint. Is Paint good enough or should I get something else?

When I'm at work I use GIMP which can be used in either linux or windows. Do a search for GIMP on google to find out more.

Oh, forgot to mention, I hate gimp, and use Photoshp at home.

The biggest complaint I have with GIMP so far is when I use the hotkey for the eyedropper and select my color, I then have to manually click on the toolbar to select my pencil due to a popup. With photoshop on the other hand I always have my 2 fingers on the  hotkeys for eyedropper and pencil. Makes for quick editing.

Never tried Graphics Gale,

I use cloverpaint on my Zaurus SL-C700

I mostly use MSPaint. Basically always starting a piece there, and sometimes moving onto Animationshop3 (which isn't free) to add transparency or animate etc... I hear Graphics Gale is pretty good but personally i could never get my hands around it.

I wonder how many of these topics there are.

Anyway, the general consensus is that Pro Motion is the thing to get if you have money, otherwise Graphics Gale is a good alternative. I normally use Graphics Gale except for certain cases [sometimes I get the basic design done in Paint and move to GG. I don't like how the resizing is in Graphics Gale].

And for animation I use GG, but I have the unregistered version so I take the frames from GG and use Microsoft GIF animator to piece them together.

I use GraphicsGale Free Edition, and I cant save anything into a GIF or an animation format. Do I have to buy it?

Yeah, or you can obtain it using a combination of Black Magic and Horse Whispering. Or, you can animate using it, and put all the frames together with a program like Microsoft GIF Animator. That's what I do.

Or you can be a naughty pirate  ;)
Darr be cracks, yarr!

I suppose you better buy it if you're going to use it much though, wouldn't want development to be stopped on GraphicsGale because of piracy. And they do update regularly, so your money's worth something...

GIF movie gear is a nice system too

btw, this topic has been created and discussed a number of times, if i remember.  i think that one of the old ones should be stickied, and this one locked? just so that we don't all have to say the same thing over and again....

I tried out IconCool editor yesterday for pixel work.

It's okay, you should give it a go
