Title: (C+C) Tree, Background, and General Advice
Post by: Barlo on December 29, 2015, 01:25:22 am
Hello, everyone! First time poster and complete new comer to pixel art here. I've been prowling the forums for a little while now and really like the community so i figured I'd join in, contribute and ask for some constructive criticism. Anyways here's the first project I've worked on past character sketches.

Its pretty simple but I wanted to work on something more straightforward to hone my skills. Main things i feel i need the most help on here though are the trees and background composition. I initially had the trunks of the trees alone as background but figured it didn't look interesting enough so I added some greenery. In any case general advice on basic techniques are also welcome :)

Hey there, welcome, from another new comer :)

I found myself starting something similar to this :P

- Personally I would add little variations to each tree, something to make them less uniform.
a lot of the shading lines up, which makes this a slave to the grid. Generally you want to break the grid.
the light source is coming from the right, therefore maybe some of the trees on the left are slightly less illuminated.  If you do this subtly, I think it might add something,
if nothing else, it will add some variation, but I would be conservative.

- maybe going a bit deeper with the brown on some of the trunks, to add a third layer of depth to the piece.
- maybe add some darker shrubs, grass and foliage behind the first layer of trees to give the scene more life.  diversify the colors of the flowers and try to add maybe a few different types of shrubs.
also, maybe a very dark green, almost black for the background color behind the trees.

Just my two cents, hope it helps.

Hey Seefore thanks for the advice!
I was a bit swamped with the holidays but still somehow managed to get some work done  I decided to change the hue of the tree bark, added some branches and varied the shading lines. I also also added some background foliage and tried incorporating some blue shifting.

I'm rather proud of the results so far but I would appreciate any more advice or criticisms.
