Title: [Unpaid] Character Artist - LingWen - An RPG to Learn Foreign Languages
Post by: wyrmmage on July 05, 2015, 10:33:25 pm
Hello everyone :)

LingWen is a role playing game that is designed to teach people a foreign language but also be fun to play :) Currently the game only teaches Chinese, but, God willing, we'd like to perhaps teach other languages at some point.

We're looking for a pixel artist to do make some animated characters for us :)  We currently have an animated sprite for the main character, but would like it redone, and most of our other characters are stickmen XD

The game is in early alpha and currently only teaches the basics of Chinese, including pronunciation and characters. At its current stage, it's most suitable for people who have never learned any Chinese or are extreme beginners in Chinese.

Please post here or email me at eliblack3@hotmail.com if you're interested :)

If you're interested in trying out the first small release of the game, you can check the game out here (http://lingwen.wyrmmage.com) :)

Also, if you're just interested in playing the game, then that's great, too :) If you have any feedback for us, please let us know :)

Thanks :)

Hello -

You've posted this here a few times now, and I think it's a really great idea for a game.  There's not really anything available that's fun and really game-like for learning languages, especially Chinese (besides very basic games aimed at very small children).

However... the game, as it is, is ...  totally boring, and not a useful teaching aid.  Ni Hao-ing at a heap of NPCs is just neither fun, nor educational.  :(

I think you need to do a bit of research on language teaching, and apply those techniques to a game design.  See if you can come up with a battle-system that uses similar techniques to duo-lingo for example.  And incorporate audio if you're teaching spoken Mandarin vs written Chinese.

I think you need to address this sort of thing before worrying about graphics, but I hope you continue the project, as it certainly could be great.  :y:

Thank you for the feedback :)

We haven't had too much feedback on how entertaining the game is, so this may be good to have :)

Had you studied any Chinese before playing the game? How far did you make it in the game? Did you make it to the lesson on tones or characters?

Also, did the first lesson open in your browser before you ran around saying "ni hao" to people? That's where at least the initial learning is supposed to take place, so if it didn't, then that would be good to know.

Thanks again; I'm looking forward to hearing back from you :)
