Title: 32px orc

just a simple orc no real effort in character design yet but i might make some variants with partial armour or something.
not very good at foreshortening so not sure how good that rear hand looks (forearm supposed to be coming at viewer).

will probably animate him into an enemy for this project not that i have any time to work on it atm  :'(

Cool sprite! The right hand looks fine to me, I have more trouble with the position of the left arm, the shading on the upper arm suggests that it is coming towards the viewer, yet the shading on the lower arm suggests it is a bit to the back (similar pose to right arm). I would try to remove the highlight from the upper arm. Aside from that, there is only so much that can be done with a sprite this size, and I think you did most really well :)

Thanks.
I'm actually not clear what u suggest.
Are we talking about the spear arm?

Awesome sprite. Actually has the slightest hint of St0ven to it.

I get what hapiel is saying, and tried to address it in my edit, with mixed results. The idea is as it goes down and back in space, it should get darker, and the forearm, coming forward out should catch the light. This goes for both forearms actually.

I also made a diagram with way more information than is necessary for the sprite. The forearm is like a squashed cylinder tiled on an axis to fit the rotation of the bones inside ( radius and ulna), and then out from that, the wrist squares off, interlocking at a similar, but not necessarily same, angle. Bridgeman is great at illustrating this.

Nice sprite Decroded  :y:

Did a quick recolor for fun (Used more analogous colors):

I think you can increase the contrast of the highlights vs the skin since it's midtones are fairly dark and doesn't have strong contrast with the shadow tone.

Thanks everyone.
Definitely looks better now I'll update later  :y:

Monitor I was using sucks for colour (too bright/washed out) so thx for the suggestion wolfie it looks way better.
Some of the colours were recycled from other sprites in the project but they don't fit as well as ur choices like warmer bone colour.
I also like ur more naturally orcy physique very cool  ;D

QUICK UPDATE:

ripped of some of wolfie's great ideas.
wow this monitor sucks i need to change lol.

UPDATE:

The update is definitely better but something about the original fits your mock-up better. Well I think so at least.

I thinking it's the sharper edges and darker greens.
and maybe the second amped up the realism a tad much.

to me the new one just looks smoother. you lost the ropey quality the muscles had.

I agree. I was wondering what wolfenoctis was doing with the speculation highlights and smoother forms, made the pecs almost pillowy. However, the more filled out mass of the abdominals of course makes more sense.

what about the orc in his own right standing solo do u think he's improved now or u think ive gone too far?
i tried to find a balance between wolfie's edit and the original.

seeing him in that mockup is pretty scary to look at in terms of consistency  :o
perhaps need to adjust him back to be more cartoony.

its unlikely to find an orc in that particular environment but still i am pretty worried about several kinds of consistency issues tbh including scale.
i wanna make some cheeky goblins too and have no idea how i'm going to squeeze them into a 16px high bounding box  :mean:
whenever i actually get TIME to work on this properly (i.e. finish studies) i'll just try to punch out a bunch of rough and dirty assets then come back and do another pass over everything to make it fit together.
its possible i'll have to cave and make the hero sprite another half a tile high (so 24px bounding box) but i'd rather not.

Ironically I'm studying a unit literally called "Manage personal work priorities" right now so I should probably get back to it
