Title: [paid]Experienced Painter for line animations - not pixel
Post by: kupo15 on May 22, 2015, 02:21:20 am
I know this is a Pixel based forum but I know of no other resources other than this to post.

I'm looking for an experienced artist that loves to color in line animations for a serious fighting game. Needs to be good at keeping things consistent and stuff you probably already know haha

Here is a link to the press kit to see what its all about

We recently changed our art direction to something much better. This picture shows where we were and where we are going.

I have several publishers that are very interested in the game, so if things go well we will have budget and it won't just be me paying from spare change. I don't know how much the money will be and I'm looking for people to do test runs of an animation of the character above before going full force. I guess I'll put $15 for a simple animation just to meet the requirements of posting here?

How much do painters usually charge?

Thanks!

I'm not much of a painter so I can't give you a great estimate of how long it would take someone so inclined to do that type of work but it is A LOT. Far more than I imagine you're anticipating, if you take a look at the Skullgirls crowd funding campaign they estimated $150000 to create a single character (http://kotaku.com/5986592/it-will-blow-your-mind-to-see-how-much-it-costs-to-add-one-new-character-to-a-fighting-game), and I would argue that from an animators perspective their designs are simpler than your suggested level of finish. Of course they have other concerns outside of just the art assets but for that type of animation don't be surprised to be paying hundreds of dollars per frame.

Just as friendly advice I would suggest aiming somewhere a fair bit lower for the level of rendering finish on the characters and focus your efforts on nice animation. Alternately you may consider using a cut out or rig type 2d animation in the style of Odin Sphere.

Thanks for the reply. I should probably clarify something if it wasn't clear. That is the final look of the character model and design, that isn't the final look of the color palette because I agree there is too much gradient in there and that isn't the look I want. I'm still working on a reduced color palette similar to what you see in the middle so I can get a crisper look. I don't want it to look like a painted style like it is now

15$ is a cheap price for a single frame, and that's just line-art, no colors.
Please, if you're going to pay 15$ per animation, no matter how simple, post it directly as "unpaid" and try to find a collaborator if you're lucky.
