Title: [W.I.P] [C + C] Fallen from Grace
Post by: Revkahdel Creations on March 04, 2015, 12:27:33 am
Just started working on a new game called Fallen From Grace.

Only a small team of us working on it, but seeing as how there is always room for improvement...

This is a mock-up that we have so far (the level has no general structure, just a case of seeing how the tiles work together and how well they fit).

Any input welcome...

First thing that springs to mind is how big the character is. I feel he's a bit big for the platforms. other than that, maybe the vertical tiles look very straight and neat. but its solid work.

ur characters arms r too straight, he needs to loosen up.
the face should be turned to face us a bit instead of facing directly right, so it matches the body as well as just looking better.

for a character this size u need to rethink ur tile strategy.
its made of too many small pieces with small texture.
Instead go for larger structures with more variation.
so instead of many small stones the same size, have different sizes.
then have some larger rocks that occupy more than 1 tile space.

r u using game maker?

You achieved spookynes, if that's what you wanted! About that mushroom, make it more it grows from the ground. They way you did it's like it fall from someone's basket. Also with this size of the character it would be better to make bigger levels. That level i see right now is for much smaller hero.

Is it just the structure of the level and the size of the tiles that make the proportions look wrong?

We have been looking at platform games and scales, I dont think the character is too big for the screen, so maybe its just a case of reworking the tilesets to be bigger so it looks right in comparison, is that what people are saying?

I get what you're saying about the arms being too straight, I will sort that out... looking at it now, noones arms are that straight when they are standing neutral.

As far as tile sizes, the size at the moment is 64 x 64 so would it be beneficial to go for 128 x 128 or just try and utilize the 64 x 64 more efficiently?

The whole scale issue might just be the way you laid out the tiles on the screen. if you were to make something with bigger spaces, it would probably look alright.
the character does look bigger than what I usually see, but it depends on the game-play I suppose

64*64 should be fine, but don't hesitate to draw large things. Things that span several tiles wide.
Look at screenshots of "Shadow of the Beast 2" for example, those huge rocks occupy a lot of space and give something pleasant to watch even in spaces where the player can't go.

so I made the level more spacious and changed the floor tile.
Also added some grass, and a rock...

I think this looks better...

Still needs some stuff in the ground to break up the "soil" texture, but space wise I think its an improvement.

Great work, surely an improvement. I really like the soil texture, looks so realistic. It's true though you need to add some stuff in it. Because just soil soil soil is boring to see. Depends to you for what to add. Also that you added grass makes everything prettier!

Tbf as it's a "woodland" level, the platform will probably be quite close to the bottom of the screen and there will be trees etc in background, so that may detract from the fact that its just soil... but we shall see :) trees are currently being worked on, so hopefully we'll know pretty soon.
