Greetings and Salutations;

Hi there I have been lurking around for a while and today I finally decided to post since I have something to present and get some feedback. These pieces are going to be a part of the game that I am working on. Also I am learning all this as I go so I will keep on updating this thread if it is ok with the admins.

NOTE: Also I would also appreciate it if someone can post an appropriate size for characters, and props. this character was done in 64, skull mob spawn was done in 32 (I think) and hell gate was done in 128

EDIT: Also; the mob spawn had to be the same size as the character so there fore both character and the mob spawn portal is of the same size 64x64

im in love with the skull portal, but it feel a bit slow
if you want it to still open at roughly that speed, maybe try to make it like the skull its trying to keep its mouth shut

skull portal! thank you! much better then mob spawn portal. :D

I'll see what I can do about force closing the mouth but the idea was like the skull would spawn and starts opening up while mob starts forcing their selves in to our dimension from the other dimension. The skull portals start appearing when the gate appears at the background (I am still trying to figure out how to make this sync together.) That could work I guess.

Any critique on the character and her still animation and hell gate?

the hell gate needs something filling in the blank spaces, even just a texture
the skull at the top could use some depth, too

and the character looks great, tho the face has little readability
her animation might move a bit too much for just breathing
having it run down the entirety of the legs might be a bit much

also are the bits of her hair supposed to stick out?

overall this is great stuff, cant wait to see how this all ends up =]

that was a still animation, as in, if she would stand for a while she would be animated like that. I had other ideas for her hair so this isnt carved in stone I will see if I can get it done soon.

currently I also have been working on one piece of mob for my first game set to test things out as I wont be using any ready made game tools but raw programming instead.

This is one type of mob that would drop from the mob spawn portal (skull portal.)

I don't like the idle animation, its so easy to follow the wave of motion up and down her body. Its like she is trying to do the worm while she is standing up.

The girl legs are stretching when inhaling, this feels unnatural. try instead to only move her upper torso. fill it with air so her chest bends outward a bit.

I will re-work the animation of this character. Since I am just starting out I think it would be wise to give her a gun or something and then make the idle animation.

This is just beginner's space ship game that popped in my head thought I should share my progress here as well for everything until I am satisfied with my style.

I like the character and this is looking very cool but the animation needs some work. DO THIS; stand up and make the most exaggerated ridiculous possible breathing motion you can, pretend you've just sprinted up a mountain. What does the motion look like? Take that motion and dial it back. For me the basic movement is bend down at the knees, drop the shoulders -> extend legs, pull shoulders up. Also throw in a bit of hand and head motion and the obvious chest expansion. You've hit most of those marks  but the legs don't bend properly and the hand motion is odd. I would also suggest while doing this to observe the order in which your body moves, everything doesn't happen at once, your shoulders hit their peak after your chest does. This is referred to as "follow through and overlapping action."

Often it's a good idea to try these things out to realise what the mechanics of the body are then you can go ahead and tone it up or down depending on what you're going for. Another small note but her uh, thing she's wearing instead of pants, should not move like that, it implies that her hips are compressing which is physically impossible. The only reason to even touch that area is if she's bending her leg from the hip. Also consider that when we bend our knees our whole body moves, you need to think of the body like a series of levers, if I want to move my knee down then my upper and lower legs have to become diagonal. Bones can't squish, they can only rotate.

Don't forget to act it out, I guarantee you'll learn something. Good luck  :y:

Quick edit of your char, just a few points, you would do well to increase both your contrast and saturation on the char since its really small, also try to limit your color count, lots of redundant colors in your sprite:

I think you need a more stylish and hipster approach to your char - also don't foget that the gamer's world is in need of strong female characters as well.

its a cool char I really wish I could edit right now but anyway lots u can take from these edits.
I actually prefer the double straps on her underwear in the original version but those lines do need some work.

Why are you shading volumetrically when you're doing these lean aeon-flux type of sprites? Why not shade just simplified planes? It doesn't look like much on its own, but consider a whole gameworld with this concept.

Keep in mind I only used 3 single pixels in my edit.

I am not much for 'less is more', I don't like the cliche, but it seems you're already heading in a sparse space, be brave :)
