Title: [PAID] Looking for freelance pixel artist
Post by: RobertR on November 02, 2014, 07:29:32 pm
Hello, my name is Robert and for the last 3 years I've worked on the indie game, Timber and Stone. You can find out more about the game at http://www.timberandstonegame.com, though the many "Let's Play" videos on YouTube might be more informative.

Currently we're updating the graphics style with heavy inspiration from games like FFT and BoF3. Going from flat shaded surfaces to delicious chunky pixels and RPG style tilesets.

Here are some screenshots showcasing what's been done in this update:

While this portion of the update is well underway, the characters, enemies and animals are really looking out of place and are also in need of an update. These entities are 3D sprites, created using 3d pixels sometimes called voxels. This style of 3d pixel characters can also be found in games like 3D-Dot Heroes, Stone Hearth, and Cube World. Though the fashion in which they're rendered in my game strives to keep a 2d pixel-based appearance in tact. Here's some examples of the current models, and a few attempts at an updated style:

Again, please note that these are rendered in game without any normal-based lighting, to preserve the pixel art style. In other words, the boxy 3d shading present in a few of the above models (the sheep for example) gets removed.
While these are technically 3-dimensional objects, I strongly believe the ability to create great looking 3d sprites comes from a pre-established skill with pixel art.

What I'm needing is someone capable of creating character concept art in this method. Simply to produce these designs, at which point I'll approve them and pass 'em off to someone else to do the actual modelling, rigging, and animating. There are a few tools that can be used to create the character designs, but what I've found is that the simplest tools tend to work best, and I'll suggest software that I've used (which is free).

I'm looking for a freelance artist I can pay per asset or hourly, though I cannot guarantee any certain number of hours of work.

If you're up to the task, please send your rates and portfolios to Robert (at) TimberAndStoneGame (dot) com .
