Title: A green thing and a candyman
Post by: tomas on August 08, 2006, 07:59:49 pm
I've been checking out this forum for a while without really posting anything so I thought I'd show two of my images here.

(http://www.pixeljoint.com/files/icons/full/orc_new.gif) (06-08-15)

I would love to get some crits/comments on the technique/color choices/whetever on these. On the orc/ogre-thing I've been trying to get rid of the black/dark oulines which I tend to use most of the time for some reason. It was drawn without any reference at all and it was my first attempt to paint muscles so the anatomy is probably a bit off. Is there anything I could do to make it more "realistic"? Also, I think I need some pointers on how to improve the pants. I just don't seem to be able to get it right.

The candyman thing was drawn with this (http://www.knowledgebookstore.com/site/images/figurines/flakling/fullsize/candyman.jpg) as reference.

Oh, and can someone please teach me how to pixel a good looking stone with the current palette in the orc-pic. :)

He reminds me of one of Indigo's characters . Hmm..the pants's texture is kinda like oil or metalized. I would make that lightest shade darker.

The green dude's head looks like it's tilted at a really awkward angle. What's he looking at? The neck looks flat. those red parts look like ribbons or something. I think the picture would be better overall without them.

I like the candyman, but you made him look like Gary Coleman. :D

I really like the Candyman, but there are alot of anatomical flaws on the orc dude.
I think it's best for Helm to jump in, and make an edit.
The blood looks more like rags from cloth, and the stone looks more like a...metal ball or
something.
But I still like it though. Keep it coming ^^

So, I tried to fix the head a bit and this is what I came up with. Don't know if it's better or not but I tried to give it some more definition. The red stuff is supposed to be some kind of Turtles-style "ribbons" which I added mainly to make use of the red colors other than on the cut on his left pec.

The candyman is really impressive, I just have one question...

...What did Gary Coleman charge you for the modeling?

check your arm length on your green guy, leg length too - should help fix that "i'm a strangely proportioned midget dinosaur" look :D  I'd play with your palette some too, he's very dark and hard to read on higher contrast monitors.

Here's a quick and dirty version of the orc with longer limbs. Am I on the right track here?

The things I immediately notice is that the green guy is very saturated and a little dark and glossy. They way you've shaded gives me mixed impressions on his shape. His pecks seem to stick out while the rest of his gut seemes flat and square. The legs also deem very stick like as the muscles don't show that they're wrapping around the leg and you just show the legbone. The shading would suggest shadow, but the powerfull highlights makes me think that the (for example right leg) is just darker and more reflective (IMO)

The left leg is (as mentioned) in a rather strange shape, but what bothers me the most are his feet. Looks like he's got 'turtles' toes. Nothing wrong with that, but he's got just about no ancle and I can't see the base of the foot and no heel. If that is going to be hidden by the left foot (our left) in the way it looks now, the foot would have to be twisted toward us and that's not a very comfertable standing position.

My thoughts on the candyman are as follows: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b377/DigitaPhoenix0/DavidJr.png  :P

Some more anatomical corrections and other little tweaks...

Getting any better?

I do say his hands are small compared with the arms, mostly the one with the axe.

theres parts of this I really think looks nice, the legs, the axe and parts of the muscle shading but I think from the waist up theres a lot of problems.

neaten it up a bit, use the 4 skin shades to your advantage especially the one your using to highlight, we need to see more of that.

hope you don't mind, editted slightly.. just fixed some bits.

even spruce up the colours a bit, it looks a bit dull and faded.

nice character..

Thanks all for your comments. They've been very helpful and useful. Here is the latest version, which I must say has improved quite a lot from the first version I posted.

Excuse the double posting, but I just wanted to post what I would like to call the final version of this (even though I'm not 100% satisfied with it yet).

I still really like this, some more edits would help this more, like making the transaction between his side and his shorts, atm it looks like his shorts are too tight around the waist..

this is a better edit than my last one, friendlier on the eyes..

you should use the colours on the shorts to help give the orc's skin a bit more colour, if you tweak the colours through trial and error you'll find that they help blend both the green and the red.. You see nothing is just one shade of one colour, our skin for example isn't just peach, we have blue's, red's and yellows..

some dithering would help..
