Title: Brash Monkeys Spriter software
Post by: HarveyDentMustDie on May 01, 2014, 05:21:08 pm
Hi guys. Did someone here used Spriter for pixel art animations, and what are your impressions?

Its ok. Can be clunky at times and buggy but it gets the job done. Good for saving time on doing frame by frame if you don't have enough resources to spare to sit there and pixel every frame.

Thanks. Is your avatar created in it?

Ok, thank you for information. I'll continue to draw each frame. :)

Spine is a bit more finished, I heard (less buggy), but I haven't used Spriter.  These were actually done in Flash, but with a similar armature workflow:

Did very minimal pixel-level clean up.  Might offend some pixel purists, and certainly doesn't suit everything, but everyone should experiment now and then!

Wouldn't recommend Flash CS5 tho, ran in to a lot of big problems. (Hopefully fixed in later versions?)

I must say that it's looking very good considering the time you have saved. :)

I just want to point out something that really makes rikfuzz's puppet animation work is the articulated hair, sometimes people try to do that sort of secondary animation with much less articulation and it wont work. Wel, alsol the fact that he's a great animator anyways :p

Pre-spriter, I used these sorts of tools on pixel projects at gameloft and glu.  These tools were the inspiration for spriter.  If you want to do pixel animation in it, it's better to only use it for translated tweens - basically just nudging pieces around to make for smoother animations.  Any time you want to rotate, I'd recommend drawing a new part.

I dont have many examples from those projects, but here's a really simple one:

This sprite was basically a single frame with nudged pieces, and one extra frame for the front arm and wheel.  Just with that alone, I was able to pull of a convincing animation in a short amount of time.

I also used a similar method for a flash game.  Not pixel art, but same idea.  redrawn rotations, translated tweens.

and here's Opie, just for kicks:

Than looks very good, but I think that you can achieve similar effect with layers in PS. I was just interested if it can make animation job easier without loosing the pixel feel, but as you said it's

better to only use it for translated tweens
Maybe I'll try similar thing with Anime Studio just for test.

you can definitely do this with just photoshop alone.  The only reason we didn't was to save resources on the phone since we didn't have to load in frame-by-frame animations

Spriter recently updated their tool (http://www.brashmonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=15573), which makes it more pixel art friendly!

Spine (http://esotericsoftware.com/) used for sprite animations (http://esotericsoftware.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2334).

These are not mine.

Created using Spine, but not by me.
Sorry if that was misleading.

Hi everyone,

Sorry I'm late to this post.  Here are examples of very fast sprite work I created using Spriter for a client, and a couple of videos showing the general workflow etc I used to achieve them:
