Title: RPG Sprites (first post)
Post by: SupaGoomba on January 10, 2013, 09:07:05 am
I have been spriting for a few years, but this is my first post here. I found a link on a pixel tutorial, and thought it seemed like to a good place to get some C+C on some of my sprites.

I am currently making an RPG for a school project. I haven't done much spriting for it yet, but this is what I've done;

Just a basic brick tile and a tree.

This is a "Shrubling", pretty much a plant person. The top plant thing will come in different colours, and I might give female ones flowers instead. The person is just a style reference (the style is supposed to be the same as that of the default RPG Maker VX character sprites), and was not made by me.

EDIT:
Mock-up

It would be helpful to know what style you're going for here.

The tree looks very cartoonish, as if made of clay or plastic. I can tell you that the bright stuff at the pointy ends should be a couple of pixels above their current position.
The trunk of the tree looks as if a flashlight has been pointed to it: Leave the the darkest shade for the upper part, and the middle shade for the rest of the tree. I'd hesitate to use the brightest shade. Ask yourself: Is the sunlight reaching the trunk directly?
Also, you should modify the base of the tree to match the topdown view of RPG Maker VX.

The brick wall doesn't have a clear light source. Assuming it's outdoors sunlight, make the upper part of the bricks lighter ...but not too much: the pattern will repeat on every single brick, and a wide range of shades wouldn't look good. You should also make the small dots on the bricks (the texture) brighter, so they don't conflict too much with the general view of the bricks.

In the Shrubling, you should avoid using black on the eye outlines and mouth. Maybe use a very dark green instead, just like in the outline of the body. As you might know, it's a rule of thumb to usually avoid pure black, because it rarely manifests itself in nature (at least, in daylight. Things like black hair are actually a very dark shade of color, not black.)

Also, maybe the eyes should be a more saturated color, to stand out more (maybe it's the black eye outlines, that make them less prevalent)

The style I'm going for is cartoonish, but still semi-realistic.

I got rid of the highlight on the tree trunk, but I'm not sure what you mean by modifying the base.

I lowered the brightness of the highlight colour on the bricks. It seems to have the right amount of "flatness" now and be less distracting. I didn't change the texture because I didn't really understand your reasoning behind making it brighter.

I changed the eyes on the Shrubling, but I don't think its worth re-posting after such a minor edit.

What I meant with the base of the tree:

Since it's a top-down view, we see the "end" of the tree from above, not from the side, as a straight line suggests.

And in regards to the brick wall:I guess my reasoning didn't make sense to you, because I just try to detect what seems off to me, and then try to come up with the reason why it does. The things that bother me when I see the wall are the overly dark grainy texture and overly dark division between the bricks. But I respect your decision of not changing it, because it's your pixelart, and I can only make suggestions about it.  ;)

Just a little mock-up I did of a house + fence:

I'm not happy with how the grass turned out, but I don't really know what to do to make it better.

I made an animation for the door too, but I only have the free version of the program I used to make it (GraphicsGale), so I can't save it.

EDIT:
These are the rest of the "object" tiles.

I'm going to make it look like the turnip is actually in the ground, once I get a dirt tile made.

I did some more work on the Shrubling;

I think the arms might be a bit too jelly-like.
