Ok so after a short delay, it appears we got the forum successfully switched. please PM a mod if you see anything extremely different than what youd expect or recognize.
Once again i apologize for the down service, we should be up and running smoothly now for a good amount of time.
please note that PAO homesite and other associated sites should be up and online within the next day or so.

Hey Fellow Pixellers,
Some time over the next 72 hours, pixelopolis will be switching to a new server. I do not expect this to change much of the activity flow on the boards, but there might be an interim of a few hours downtime for the forums.
With this switch, we will ensure that this fine community will have a home for the upcoming years and hopefully longer.

Nice to see that PP's still alive and kicking. Next time, a small page with some text indicating maintenance operations would be a nice touch, so that we don't think "OH NOES HAXXORED AGAIN DAMN KIDIES".

So...why weren't we told over at the 72 hour GDC site that this was happening? It would have been really nice to know that the site would be taken down.
But, you know, I guess just taking it down without informing us and making us worry the hell out of ourselves thinking we lost the entire site works fine too.

For the first 5 hours or so there was a message when you went to pixelopolis that said "we are switching to a new server". Didn't anyone else see it? IDK, I just want to give props to the admins & mods, because they're doing an awesome job.

Well, it's hard to see a notice when a) we aren't pixelopolis and therefore don't visit it often and b) when I checked today, the entire site was missing and just displaying a general hosting solution page.
I don't know about you, but if someone gave me a car to use as a kind gesture, I would be quite shocked if one day I woke up and my car wasn't in my driveway anymore. Maybe you would be fine with that, but personally I would be a tiny bit pissed off.

You need to take a deep breath. Pixelopolis is back, we're all in one piece, so what are you so angry about? At least you could have taken the time when the forum was down to read a good book or go outside.

It would've been nice for some to have received a board e-mail about this, although it's quite understandable that it did not happen.
It's just unlucky for you that you visited this place not when the warning was posted but when the server was down. That's just coincidence.

That would be all fine and dandy, but I'm not a frequenter of pixelopolis. Our site is the 72 Hour GDC (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/72/board/) which, until last night, was entirely nonexistent. And now we don't even know if the databases are going to be restored correctly or not, or when. At this point we have about 100 users who are waiting for a game development competition (which starts voting in less than 2 weeks) who now think that the competition site is broken. Definitely not a good first impression for anyone new to the competition.

that is rough. i didnt even know your board existed, or that it was tied into pixelopolis in any way.
anyone who is actually on pixelopolis though should actually like, read the notices, otherwise thats not the admins problem.
since the server has switched, and you say "years," i take that to mean that this is no longer to be considered a temporary forum?

The site isn't tied to pixelopolis. It's only hosted here because Pep and I came to an agreement that we would host it here last year after the last admin hosting the site randomly deleted it too.

I've been good friends with a few people from here for about 3 years now (mainly Brian AKA GenesisGenocide and Peppermint Pig from the 72 hour competitions).

jverkoey: You can take any problems and anger about the situation offline with me if youd like. i wholly understand your anger about the down time. I have been trying to keep in close contact with pep about this and about who/what else the switch would affect besides pixelopolis. The situational facts were unfortunate given that A. pep's online activity and my own are either in stark contrast of each other, or he has not been available online frequently enough to be able to liase in this rather fast-paced switch and B. the need to take action had to be done much faster than was initially realized. If nothing at all was done then both communities would have been down for a much larger duration of time (though i think i understand this doesnt lessen the outrage of being ill-informed). I would assume that we need to get in contact to clean up some issues and i would not mind posting an apology for the gap of service on the 72 hour compo boards.
Adarias: i think i mean that whatever the community develops into, itll have a home on the web for a good long while.
face lift issues are all being heard by the way.
