Title: The Stare.
Post by: Kcilc on July 05, 2012, 07:27:22 pm
This is just for practice since I don't generally draw many faces. I'm trying to get that mistrusting, not quite a scowl, stare with this. I'm not sure if I accomplished that.

It's obviously still pretty WIPy, and I'm not sure if I want to render the hair or not. If not, I'll just make it the same color as the background.

Also, rim lighting! Does it look better this way?

There are some anatomical problems in the face, but I won't pretend I know enough to fix them, so I'll leave that to the next, more advanced C+C'er.  One that I can point out, however, is that there are 3 or 4 colors in the face that are almost exactly the same shade, and therefore don't provide contrast or real shading.  I'd definitely play with with them; you'll notice when you spread out the values more that the lighter clusters don't correctly define the parts of her face.

Ah yes, the plains of the face...I do have the most terrible time trying to get those right. Thanks for pointing that out.

Here's another attempt at shading her face. I hope that it's an improvement!

latest iteration looks pretty aggressive,

here's a couple observations and suggestions, not entirely sure but to me it seems possible it's the polar opposite of something else mentioned recently, and she has a bit too much cranium, there are several ways to fix that bring it down, or bring the face up, or just change the hair, I think that part in the hair is implying she has a huge forehead, or that she's got partial boldness

and if you wanted to do the rim highlights try to keep it consistent and don't forget the hair would be picking it up too, probably ignore those purple lines in the hair though, changed some face tones too

Alrighty. Hm, yes I see what you mean about the part and her forehead...that was irking me a little bit too, I wasn't sure why though. I decided I take a whack at the hair, even though it always scares me—I've never been that good at getting it to look right, but I've gotta learn some day I suppose.

Played more with her skin tones, fleshed out her hair, tried to give her a more closed off vibe, worked on her torso, lessened her scowl, and freckles!

Messy and incomplete, but maybe helpful edit:

Just like anything else, normals affect light received.
It can be simplified into sheets of color based on direction.
Make a little chart to reference the color progressions you want.
It would have been beneficial to do one for the other side as well.

The drawing shows you are already aware of this, just re-visiting the idea.
You're doing great without any input from me.
Sexy!

Piledriver, you make it look so easy. Thank you for the tips and your encouragement!

Messing with the hair—it's...getting there?

Update:
Polish polish polish...

I'm pretty happy with her hair. I was hoping to get it looking a little bit more natural, but oh well, it was good practice either way.
I'm not really sure if I like what I did with her body. I can't seem to keep it from looking off.
