Title: Gif animation software, free - open source?

I'm using Grafx2 for pixel art, but as most of you know, there is no Gif animation support. I would like to find a good Gif animation software that is free, open source and is basically still maintained, that I can use. Any recommendations?

GIMP can handle animation, although in a very convoluted way.

ASEprite. Latest version was released a month ago, it's free, open source, and supports animation.

I think the next version of Grafx2 is supposed to support animations. Until then, ASEsprite and GraphicsGale (http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/) are good free programs.

Grafx2 has animation in the work-in-progress 2.4 version, so it's only available on Windows and (if you can compile it from the sources) Linux.

If you use the animation mode, you can't use layers at the same time; so it's more designed for sprite work than complex scenes.

The free edition of GraphicsGale doen't export gifs.

GIMP has very basic support for gif animations. When exporting to GIF each layer is one frame, the length and composition mode of each frame is encoded into the layer name: "Frame 1 (100ms) (replace)", means that that frame will be shown for 100ms (0.1 seconds) and will replace the last frame instead of just beeing drawn over it. You can preview the animation with "Filters->Animation->Play Animation...". It's not very comfortable, but does its job.

take1.de is free, it's what I used before ggale. it has some weird functionality but it still sounds better than that gimp layer method thing.
I really dont understand why gimp and or photoshop have to make animation so retarded
Oh, there's also msgif animation,(or something ) it is useful for taking a batch of images and making them into a gif.
