Title: [WIP] [C+C] Old Fire Truck
Post by: usanike on April 17, 2012, 08:56:09 am
hi, i'm fairly new to pixel art and am trying to create a fire truck from the 1940s. here is a picture of what i want to try to replicate:http://fire-engine-photos.com.s3.amazonaws.com/11836.jpg

this is what i have so far.

i want to keep the shading as basic as possible. i feel like one of the issues i'm having is displaying the back wheels properly. i'd also like to keep this perspective.

any help would be much appreciated! =]

One of the main things that's stifling the rendering of the forms is the lack of contrast. There should be a drastic enough distinction between the roof of the car, the hood of it, and the bottom platform in the back. Hue shifting might also come into play to help that effect. With effective highlighting, it will push the forms to seem more 3 dimensional. (For example on the hood of the car because it protrudes more, the roof of the car and the back wall.) (which it looks like you have a slight highlight there but can be pushed much further with the right colors.

I feel like the front bumper of the car should also be curved a bit more so the very front protrudes more. About the back wheels, yours are more crooked and diagonal whereas your ref has them straight on, so that could be part of the problem you're having.

I think this is a neat idea, hope my comments help.

thank you for the reply!
i've made several changes and tried my best to make look more 3 dimensional. i changed the rear wheels a bit, but i still think they can be improved. here's the updated version:

i can stare at this for hours trying to think of what to do next..what to improve and how to do it. it's like writer's block, but i'm having fun with it.  :)

Unfortunately, the same problems persist. Perhaps this edit is better at explaining the type of depth you can achieve with this:
