Title: GR#090 - Mountains & Villages Scenery
Post by: Xamllew on January 30, 2012, 11:20:26 pm
Hi everyone, I'm working on this Landscape set in a small village surrounded by vast mountains. I'm really trying to convey the immense scale and distance of the mountains so I've exaggerated the atmospheric perspective.

Current color count is 23. I'd love to hear any CnC, good or bad.

Oh and the little red posts are supposed to be villagers.

My houses are so boring, how can I add interest to the village?

Add fences and other stuff. Storage containers, fishing rods, drying food etc.

How about a little campfire?  Also, something in the foreground would add some more interest and depth.

Added more to the foreground, trying to rough out some detail into the village

Nice little scene, what's the idea behind it? is it intended as part of a larger project?

Ideas:

This reminds me of some old mining towns near my home.  The only thing missing is an old quarry and a decrepit sluice building.   The well looks a bit odd though, that close to a river.

I agree with Sharm.  The well does seem odd that close to a river.  How about a fire pit?

Thanks guys, I'll remove that well. Don't know if I can clearly render a firepit at this resolution though.

Thanks for the suggestions Facet, I will definitely add some variety to the buildings and foliage. As for what this is for, it's for the weekly Pixel Joint challenge.

Changed the hue of the farther mountains, changed one of the buildings, few more small details, I don't know how well everything reads. Still trying to think of things to add.

Currently 28 colors.

Also beginning to work on a night/dawn version on the side.

Very WIP

Real nice changes ;D, smokestack & distant mountain look great.

What I meant by idea was things like; where is the scene, what country, what season? what type of village and people are these? if you don't consider this stuff you risk ending up with places that could be anywhere populated by people and things that might be anyone, anything. Possibly you have a idea yourself but the more specifics you list the more specifics we can suggest.

How about some trees on the further mountains and some variation in foliage colour.

I'm still trying to figure out how I can add more foliage types without making it seem too cluttered. As for the scenario, they are humans of an alternate Earth which remains vastly unexplored and undeveloped, primarily harsh mountainous terrain, limited to frontier technology.

maybe you could change the mountain a bit like this (your village let me think about canada ^^ )

you should make the forest darker

So it's really a nice village :)

Thanks for all the help guys. Aside for some small edits I'm going to call this finished, I can't cram anymore information into it without raising the color count or cluttering it.
Changed the texture on the closest mountain, removed dithering from farthest mountain, small changes and polished up around the town.

These are now my tiny desktop wallpaper. ^_^ It must be the trees - they put me in mind of Bob Ross.
