Title: Pinup girl help
Post by: dpixel on January 14, 2012, 02:19:59 am
I posted this over at pj and got some comments on proportion, etc.  I wonder if you guys could enlighten me on some of the problems.  I'm trying to learn how to draw these type of things with limited references.  It's hard for me to see things sometimes.  Edits are encouraged.   :)
Also...maybe a general indication on how bad or good this is.  Thanks.

Good, overall.

It's characteristic of all your work, but the PA tech is a tad sloppy. For instance the highlight on her thigh. Why so jaggy? It's a female's leg, make it a smooth contour.

Red fingernails ain't workin'. And the red and yellow eyes?

Her proportions don't bother me.

Thanks so much for the comments.  It means a lot from you.  I really like your work.

Yeah, the red and yellow eyes.  I picked those colors because of their value.  It's hard to do eye's right at this scale, so I mix colors till it 'looks right'.  Any suggestions?
One pixel really makes a difference in making her look like a raccoon or non-realistic.

And of "characteristic of all my work"...What overall is my stuff lacking?  In other words, what should I be focusing on?

Thanks again.

Oh thanks, no problem.

I agree, a lot of trial and error necessary to get your pixels right when representing things so small.

About your work, I'm just referring to how your stuff has a nice texturey feel to it, but often feels rough and unrefined. But, that's just my opinion. As long you like what you do, who cares, right?

Well, I could always like it more.  I wouldn't know till I could do it.

About that texture feel.  I know what you mean.  I tend to over pixel things trying to make up for my lack of artistic ability.  I suppose I should work on getting the shapes right first.  I've heard the unrefined comment before.

At least the proportions didn't bother you.  I know they're not perfect, but I thought they looked ok.  I've learned to look at things at different times.  And every time I see something else a little off...like looking at it in a new frame of mind.

I just wish it came as naturally to me as some you guys make it seem.  Just practice I guess.

I was really impressed with this.

Her torso is a little bit long perhaps, and she's sitting in a slightly uncomfortable position. Shifting the part of her torso above her hips backwards seemed to help both of these.

Her stomach and legs seemed a little bit muddy, like you were guessing while you were shading, so I think some more reference study could've helped with those. Also be very aware of how your legs are connected to your hips. It took me a long time to figure out how to get that connection to look right, but it's really simple. You just have to remember that the legs are connected to the outside of the pelvis, so the legs will hide it when they're bent like in your picture.

I also thought that your skin tones were just a bit too blue, so I saturated them more. I've also noticed that when you're working on a face that small, just take out the whites of her eyes completely, because they just add unneeded detail which in turn makes it really challenging to get it to look right.

I really like the way you handled her hair. It looks fabulous!

when i saw it at pj i thought the torso seemed a bit enlongated.  did you use any reference for this?  I found a picture in a pretty similar pose if you need a reference:

i think according to that your torso is a bit long.  though there isnt neccesarilly anything wrong with distorting propotions a bit; the odalisque comes to mind ( http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4a/Jean_Auguste_Dominique_Ingres,_La_Grande_Odalisque,_1814.jpg/300px-Jean_Auguste_Dominique_Ingres,_La_Grande_Odalisque,_1814.jpg (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4a/Jean_Auguste_Dominique_Ingres,_La_Grande_Odalisque,_1814.jpg/300px-Jean_Auguste_Dominique_Ingres,_La_Grande_Odalisque,_1814.jpg) )

and off topic, but is there a way to make these hyper links shorter ( like so it just says 'click here' or something)

@Kcilc - Wow!  Awesome edit.  The eyes are wonderful.  Just what I was looking for.  Nicely done.  I'm going to study that.
The hip edit looks good too.  Kind of extreme, but it works and looks natural.  Love it!

Thanks.

You could embed them into shorter words. Instead of
http://www.pinupdirectory.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Jayne-Mansfield-2-600x800.jpg
you could have
cool link (http://www.pinupdirectory.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Jayne-Mansfield-2-600x800.jpg)

Here's the code for how to make that work:
Code: [Select]
cool link
For clarification, the parts needed are: a "start-bracket"

Code: [Select]

then a text or image,
and then an "end-bracket", which is always

Code: [Select]

This looks pretty cool, and it caught my eye. I just thought I'd make an edit/critique from where Kcilc left off.

Like he said, it looks like she's sitting in an uncomfortable position.
But in addition, the whole thing seemed a little messy, to be honest. And I've never been a huge fan of outlines, but that's personal opinion.
The colors seem a little grey and bland, with mostly pale greys for skin tone.
The leg looks slightly muddy, as mentioned.
And the torso does seem a little long.
I'd also say that the hand and feet lack form and are a little too small. (The feet look like flippers?)

However, I like it overall and I think you did a great job! The hair looks nice, and I especially like the flowers in her hair!

It's sort of a quickie, but here! :D

Awesome!  Thanks for the edit.  I hear ya about the uncomfortable position and I'm working on making things a bit cleaner in my work in general.  I think I tend to overwork things and overlook other things.  Your edit is very clean to my eye.  I can learn something from this.
