Hopefully as the challenge continues new palettes will be switched out for the old ones, so black & white will definitely appear sometime in the future.

Very cool portrait, btw.

Where did you get that pallette? It really lacks a highlight as shown in Helm's piece...

very nice, ryumaru, but the left cheek and the right cheek don't seem to belong to the same person. Put your hand over either half of his face and visualize.

Heres my guy, Don Alesaggio, not to proud of it exactly but i had a lot of fun working with the palette

perhaps the next palette could be a little less straight-forward? these might as well be any 4 shades of similar hues.

Hey Faktablad, where is yours? Don't tell me you won't join in on your own created fun... :)

And every entry is so moody... s'all looking good.

P.S.: Adarias, i can't quite make out what's going on with the eye and temple area on (our) right side of the face. I don't know where the eye begins/ends, and what that lighter circle is... Everything else is looking fine though, love the clothing and hair.

I'd say Turbo's my favourite, even if it's a bit more generianime style than I usually go for. The two toughs in the background were brilliant.

Title: Re: Palette Workshop Challenge
Post by: Faktablad on May 31, 2006, 09:52:47 pm
That's kind of odd, Setz.  I wouldn't expect a mafia boss to be so skinny, naked and dead.  I'm not trying to mess with your artistic vision, but I encourage you to imagine what would happen if you gave this to a game developer when he asked for a portrait of a "mafia boss".

I'd like to push you all to post in GIF format if you can.  PNG format messes with the colors, as you know, and while it's only minor, putting all these spiffy portraits together is made much easier when they've all got the same colors.  No problem if you can't, though.

My first one. Couldn't save it as a GIF; no program I has does that, and Paint seemed to want to add random dithering everywhere for some reason. Sorry for the inconvenience. This new palette looks like fun, probably won't be able to finish anything with it though.  :-\

Finished mines. Not sure about it though... it's really scrappy and messy but I didn't feel like cleaning it. And I'm not really liking the background, was going to dither it but... didn't think it'd fit with the rest of the art.

Trying to get into pixeling so i thought this would be a nice start. I know my attempts are somewhat rubbish compared to a lot of other peoples works, but i still had fun trying to use the colours properly. I might try another city scape but using the style on the beastie boys 5 borough's album cover might be a nice touch. Probably start on my robot tommorow. Great entries bye everyone so far! This is turning into a good challenge. Going to eat my sherbet dip dab i deserve a reward  ;D.

xion night's is very nicely formed. :)

zach: oh please, reproduce the first one for the waist-up portrait, it's just too cool and shouldn't be too hard either with all the clear plain shapes

godslayer, xion: that's some nice rendering there

prothetic child: i wonder what is going in the further away half of the face, else very nice

dusty: turned out really nice. there's some issues with the pointing hand, it looks a bit flat and thus kind of embedded into the picture, not standing out

crazy asian gamer: rocket propelled jaws for rocktetpropelled grog? yes

stoirling: welcome :9 these are nice first tries, but you probably could have given the portrait more of a mafia boss and less of a holidays at the beach feel :)

blick: i have yet to say how much i like it. it doesn't come across too well what exactly there is going on with the handmotion and the sword however

ok, that's all i can see in the topic summary :P but i remember really liking larwick's and takaM.'s (<3 the eyepatch :)) and thinking that i know that you could really do better robo, although i really can't quite recall yours atm.. and wondering where i could get the latest schu merchandise  :-*

I figured I won't get much better unless I tried something new, so here's my attempt:

I tried to have a somewhat different angle to the picture than everyone else. I'm not used to working with only two colors, and I've never really worked with sharks or water before, so it isn't the best. Also, excuse the really crappy dithering on the clouds. I suck at dithering :/

Random thoughts from the Tremulant's head:

- This palette has been way more interesting than I would've expected.

- Dude, Larwick! That's what mine woud have looked like if it had of been, y'know... good :D lovin' the waves.

- Haha Blick gets a thousand million points for breaking the "generic, non-descript shark" trend. How did no one else (me included) do a hammer head?

- Legofreak, yeah, the white shark definitely works best for the reason Dascu mentioned.

- Turbo, best interpretation of the theme ever.  :-*

- Everyone else, wicked shit. There's a stunning amount of variation here given the restrictions.

Yay! Now I feel all productive and group-oriented! ...

Ace Spades: Professional gutter and allround not niceguy.

...marks the spot... Loved this palette

...Rargh?...

Was working on the city-palette, but it didn't really work out. Couldn't make any good use of the colours, but I might try again later on though.
Can't wait for the next one.

dude, those are by far my favorite pirate-robot and shark pictures yet. Great job!

I started working with the new palette, but lost inspiration about half way through. Maybe I'll finish it, maybe I won't. Anyway, my idea was to do mine on objects you might find in a demented child's room:

Kickass, snake, as usual. Get a pixeljoint account or a webpage already!
Many thanks.

I'm not sure if I understand the purpose of Pixeljoint. I was under the impression that it's sort of a slightly smaller, Pixel-version of Deviantart.

Have been planning a site for years, just never get around to it because I can't make up my mind for a layout.  :P

WIP:

Fairly nice palette, but i found the black a horror to fit in well... any tips guys? General C&C aswel. (Yes, i realise the horizon is curved, a stylistic choice by me).
PS. Any of you who watch lost and have heard about all the different thoughts people have had about it, you'll understand this piece... maybe.  :P

Evil-Ville: That is sick.

The last tree:
Is it the humans' purgatory, living in a world graced with only a single, small tree?

Or is it the tree's purgatory, existing in a realm where it is the last of its kind, knowing that, when it dies, it will be forgotten?

Perhaps it's the bird's purgatory, who lives surrounded by human children who torment it with their constant attention; knowing that this is the only place in the world where it is able to live as it should.

Maybe the purgatory is the dog's. So close to the tree...so full a bladder.

It could just as well be the man's purgatory; his dog refuses to walk in front and on the right side of him. (I know how annoying that can be.)

You decide.

No. I actually had no idea how I was going to tie the picture into the theme 'till about halfway through. ::)

I'm thankful that we finally got a pallette that got people working, but please don't submit palettes yourself.

You are free to make suggestions and I will almost always use them, but I'd prefer it if people didn't submit palettes whenever they pleased.  This will help to avoid confusion, and it will also let me update the first post for the newcomers.

That is A-W-E-S-O-M-E, Matriax. No other words can tell.  I would agree that other colors might have been better, but theey wouldn't have pushed this amazing style to this piece. A possible flag: I would remove the mountains and add more high building as the left and right side don't really make sense to me..
Title: Re: Palette Workshop Challenge

thanks for the commets, Lick and GOODNIGHTdestroyer.

Well i can try make another version removing the mountains and put more buildings.

And the buildings i not like very much, seems a big tv controllers XDD

And the pink background need more work i think any dithering etc... for create more sunset efect and detailed a little more the down city.

Yes, from the cities I've seen, they tend to be low on the outskirts with the tallest buildings at the middle.

Very nice, Matriax. I think it looks fine as it is, and I especially like the lights on the building.

Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purgatory) has a lot to say on Purgatory.  It also has a bit to say in Spanish (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purgatorio), but not as much as on the English page.  If you don't feel like reading that, it can be described in a nutshell as the area between Heaven and Hell.  Not a very nice place, but not as bad as Hell.

it comes from when things were required to work with 8x8 squares.  i dont know exactly how or why, but it just sorta became standard.  a lot of programs still require textures etc to be 2^n

not quite sure why i bothered posting this since almost everyone here knows that...oh well, sometimes the world needs the obvious stated... 8)

I am not happy about how contrastless the body turned out... and i know there is allot else that could be better but i am rather pleased anyways.

Hey, that's really nice.  Excellent use of the colors; you've used them quite differently from most other entries.

Also, I agree that this should get started back up again.  If I recall correctly, it was started again once before, but that thread has since been lost to the depths of the General forum. If a new thread could be made here, I'm sure interest could be re-raised.

I think you'd only see a bit of the top of the sun reflected because the buildings would cast a shadow upon the water, especially over where the little lights are reflected. Otherwise it's very nice, i especially like the buildings.

I know I'm bumping an old thread, but why not. I was browsing through the activities section and I found the palette challenge thread. Decided to give it a go, but the thing didn't turn out the way I wanted it to. I've read that noobs tend to over-dither and so did I. I dithered, then removed some of it, and dithered again until it was a mess.

I used the second palette [ (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y212/Faktablad/elawesomopalette02.gif) ], but I cheated and I placed only a couple of green pixels on the buildings, so unless you look really close or enlarge the image, you probably won't see them.

If you want to desplay your image here you have to copy past your image's url between the [ img ] tag and not the PJ page link like you did.

Manja, these are great!
Congrats for the slum, it actually looks like one where most entries just looked like cities. You might take it a bit further.
Maybe try some sunward edge highlights with that green.

@ admins: one palette (Mayan ruin) is gone again from the initial post.

I'm not sure if I should post in here, but I did one of the workshop palettes a few minutes ago and I figured I should post it. Thought it was a shame that so few of you made happy sharks.  :P

It's a shame hardly anyone posts here but those posting entries - says I whilst posting an entry , This challenge has had a very long shelf-life, the mafia portrait especially attracting a ton of interest. It's a great way of getting people to participate and test themselves regardless of experience and I hope it's continued at some point.

There are some absolute gems here, Stefano's & Manjaman's in particular this page.   :blind:

I did these a while ago but never got around to sharing them. I really used them as practice for pixel-specific technique; working harmoniously with the grid, finding pleasing shapes, AA. This stuff is second nature to old hands here and there are some some great guides on the forum - thanks Helm :y: but you really have to get your hands dirty.

Edit - Updated image based on feedback

I like those! However, I'm not so sure about the highlights in the middle and bottom two portraits; I think they could do with more work. I have difficulties understanding the anatomy of the middle portrait (the pear-shaped ones). The portrait bottom left is trying to convey stark shading, except it's narrowing the man's face... like a very near frontal light but not quite. I can't put my finger on what bothers me about the shading on the suit, either.
As for the bottom right portrait: I'd change the shape of the highlights to convey the form/volume of the shoulder and face.

Thanks Chris, appreciate the edit

They're all a bit stiff, I wasn't really confident with the medium at the time and I think these are all mouse & 1-px brush :-[, but I learned a lot making them.

I added more mid-tone to mr.bottom left and removed the sloppy suit shading, I also tried some changes to his partner in the top row but I really like the Adam Hughes-y vibe I had and I think your edit flattens the face a bit.

Test-drove a few things on ms. bottom right but kept the large skin highlights; I was aiming for greasy skin, harsh lighting. I'm not sure how I'd go about improving the sense of form with them. Anatomy aid dead centre ;). In all seriousness, him & Blondie were intended as cartoon dishevelment.

Any pixel technique missteps? they're about as tightly rendered as I could manage.

Your main issue is overshading, which has as consequence a lack of readability on some of your portraits. I think you should try being a bit more subtle in the shading. I had a quick look at Hughes' work and I gave it another shot:

I also tried convey sweaty skin on the cartoon girl. Cartoon doesn't mean inconsistencies, though! ;)

Top centre looks great; a lot like that catwoman mugshot, but I wasn't consciously trying to emulate that look. I can't see either of the semi-realistic edits as an improvement per say but a different approach, things like colouring the whites of the eyes and completely removing rendering of the nasal bone doesn't look right to my eye. lovely greasy speculars on Blondie, I'll try toning my highlights down a bit.

In what way inconsistent? between the girl and him?

I think I might make a bunch of individual palettes for these and possibly accessorise a little; some of them look a little bare. Maybe I should jump threads with this.

Inconsistent in the way that your moustache man and his skull don't seem to match, in terms of the way both are shaded/highlighted: everything concerning the cheekbones and jaw bothers me in the skull's portrait. It doesn't help if I read the mouth as a lower lip, either. :/

Sorry, meant to get back to you on this sooner, I don't want to come across as being ungrateful for your input because I really am.

I'm not sure that I understood what you meant by overshading.  I would usually take this to mean excessive bridging between shades like in a bad airbrush job ;D, obviously the softest edge possible here is four decent contrast steps and I haven't attempted dither or similar but you might say that the values on the top girl and partner are too evenly spaced so as to look a bit like a 'posterise' filter. The lighting is definitely highly mannered but attractive I think.

What was bothering you about the anatomy of pear-man before I posted the skull? I'm afraid the skull was a bad joke, I didn't attempt to keep the lighting or stylistic choices consistent because I thought the idea of his having realistic anatomy was amusing :P. Your edit is priceless though, I wish I gone down that route ;D. Bottom lip  intended.

I thought I really ought to do a couple of new portraits in the same restrictions (not Mafia though, apologies to the  thread) from scratch since I'm receiving criticism and there's a element of me being a little blind to stuff I've become overly familiar with. I was surprised how much my approach has changed since I did the others. Incremental edits to a couple of the older portraits also.

May I suggest you start your own thread? That way this leaves more breathing space for others who want to post here in future.
