A scene from deep space. Crits/edits welcomed.

I like the colours on the metal bars. Too bad they're a little bland. You might want to add some details like other bars around them or dents from space debris. I don't really get the shading and highlights on the vertical circular object though. It looks like the lighting on that one is coming from the left, contrary to the lighting on the other objects.

This is what I could really use some help with.

Yes teh highlights bother me as well. Also to my knowledge deep space doesnt really have a primary light source *shrug*,
-
what would you then call the closest planet?
-
I would call that a planet helm. They dont give off light. The closest star i presume is what you are getting at, and yes that would provide a light source. However, i assume by deep space, he means that its the middle of nowhere without closeby celestial bodies.
-
Erm, planets reflect light actually, and a LOT of it. Just the moon is able to illuminate most of the earth's surface reasonably well on a clear night ;)
-
not to mention that floating space junk has no atmosphere to shroud it from the light that is in space. i think you should consider the nearest sun as the primary, then planets and moons as the secondary. ambient comes from all the stars i suppose

Hmm, my bad. XP.

Really awesome conversation you guys have going. :P
I guess I was wrong to call it "deep space", as there are clearly some spatial objects near it that are shining light on it. Regardless, I would like to know what to do with the vertical circular object. Obviously there are two main lightsources: the slightly dull green-yellow one on the left, and the bright blue one on the right. I guess there's also some sort of dull lightsource that still lets the form of the object be seen even when part of it is shrouded from both lightsources.
Can someone tell/show me how to light/shade that circle thingy? Any other crits are appreciated.

Leave the gray disc alone, move strong light source to left side, weak light source to right side. I think that will make it believable. You want strongest light source on the left to justify being able to see the object. If the strong light source was on the right it would be a silhouette.
