Title: Need help identifying finding more about a cartoon
Post by: xhunterko on August 31, 2011, 08:02:06 pm
Hey! I need help from some animation gurus! First of all let me post this:

http://twitpic.com/6e4ays

Now, the small square girl at the bottom. Does anyone know what film/animation/cartoon she's from? I had some ideas on how to go about searching but I didn't find anything. Also, the book says 'stylized stiffness' as a style. But I didn't find much on google about that either. Any clues?

Thanks in advance!

That is a page from the The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams. As this is an instructional book, she may not be from anything. Just a random creation for an example walk like many of the example walks in the book. I could be wrong though.

If you read the rest of the book in context, why that walk is "stylized stiff" might make more sense.

Still though. There has to be more examples of this type in order for him to call it a type in the first place. It's just that I don't know how to look for it.

Looks like it would come from a low budget cartoon from the 60's such as Rocky & Bullwinkle.

this reminds me of what Jhon Kricfalusi would call UPA style, which is supposed to forget about  depth in animation, and instead  focus just on it's 2d "design" qualities, so they emphasize the  geometric shapes in the characters and in the composition and forget everything else, even fluidity.

Notice how Loomis doesnt reccomend animating like that, it ultimately became very stiff.

That link looks useful. I'll try searching for what's in there then. Thanks guys!
(if your curious, what prompted my search was the timlapse of the making of a ludum dare 21 game. the guy had a square shaped character with similar legs and tried to animate it the more fluid way. needless to say it did not go well. but the square girl would've been a perfect example)
