Title: [WIP][C+C] Isometric RTS Tiles v4
Post by: xanthier on August 18, 2011, 09:30:34 pm
Latest UPDATE: made rocks a bit more angular, less shiny and added grid per request.

I'm coming back here after a long hiatus.  I'm creating a 2D RTS in isometric perspective.  I've created this starter tileset that is to be the template as I add details, tiles are for water, grass, land and plateaus/cliffs.
Let me know what you think, if there are any errors or something I overlooked, then I'll start adding details and shading and the like.
(I'm also looking for a programmer/and or good engine to make this in since the last one didn't pan out.)

Thanks,

Xan

Well, the shapes look good, why not post a mockup?

Sorry I let this die, life got in the way and I'm just getting back to this.  Here is the mockup that was requested, let me know if this is NOT what you had in mind.

That's looking really good, but it kinda falls into the same problem as the ones in this thread (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=13217.0). The rocks seem droopy and soft, which makes it look more like stacked mud.

I see what you're saying, but mainly just with the shapes. Can you please be a bit more specific?

Should there be more angles or should the rocks be rounder?  I don't (think?) that the individual rocks as poorly defined as in that example, nor does it suffer from the same kind of stray pixel noise.  Are the rocks perhaps too shiny as well contributing to the wet mud appearance?  I'm going for the kind of natural rock wall that looks a bit like it was man made but was not.  The setting is a tropical island temperate zone.

I guess this is more what I'm going for, as far as a reference is concerned. Reminds me a bit of Surt's edit on that other thread.

Thanks for the comments.

One suggestion for getting away from the droopy rock look - feature hard angles. Go more angular with the rock faces. Your ref has lots of hard rigid lines creating rectilinear shapes in it.

Also, beware of all the lumpy globby shapes you currently have. Try for continuous layers of hard rock, instead of breaking them up vertically, so much; less vertical edges.

Next time around, would you mind posting your tile grid overlaid on your tiles?

Isn't what water erosion do to rocks ? Make them look round-shaped ?

I actually think those rocks are quite good... ( but well :P )

I still don't really see the problems with round rocks. They might not be 100 percent realistic but imho visually appealing. And you actually see them quite often in games, so they can't be that wrong. (Secret of Mana 3 for example (http://levelselect.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/sd3.gif) )

I believe it's the color choices that are making the rocks look extremely damp.  You can try changing the more up front colors to look less like mud while still keeping the shape.

Can you help me with the colors? I posted another update. I like it better now.

I still need some feedback on the colors. Anyone?
